Mark does't treat his guitar like a guitar, but as an equal band-member. Sometimes Mark sings, sometimes the guitar sings, sometimes they sing a duet, but they never interrupt each other.
Exactly! They are not just two exceptional guitar players. They are true geniuses, righteous soldiers in the art of Music. Knopfler and Gilmour are my favorite of all time! It is not coincidence that most people with good taste who appreciate one, will inevitably appreciate the other.
Bought this album when it first came out and was amazed by the musical content and the lyrics and this “What it is” track was one of the outstanding songs on the album. But then again it’s Mark Knopfler and this man never made a bad vibe or song in his life a musical genius and we’re very lucky to share our world with such a talent. Thanks again Mark for your contribution to modern music.
It isn't flashy, it isn't stylish, it isn't extravagant in any way. But it is with out a doubt, one of the most beautiful songs i've ever heard. A true feat of musicianship.
L argee sir he's helped me through life as well followed him since 1976 he's a master craftsman in his own right god bless mark knofler followers love you all 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms... My heart's full of holes, too. So you'll find me at Madame Geneva's, keepin' the demons at bay, or else lookin' down upon the lights of Taormina. Still, I keep a weather eye on the horizon, my back to the wall... What it is, now.
You can never get enough of Mark Knopfler he’s a master on the guitar and sing such beautiful colourful songs and his heartfelt lyrics transends most all other artists today
One of my top 10 favourites. Only Mark can sing lyrics like: "There's frost on the graves and the monuments but the tavern's warm in town". A masterpiece !
What it is - Mark knopfler lyrics The drinking dens are spilling out There's staggering in the square There's lads and lasses falling about And a crackling in the air Down around the dungeon doors The shelters and the queues Everybody's looking for Somebody's arms to fall into And it's what it is It's what it is now There's frost on the graves and the monuments But the taverns are warm in town People curse the government And shovel hot food down The lights are out in city hall The castle and the keep The moon shines down upon it all The legless and asleep And it's cold on the tollgate With the wagons creeping through Cold on the tollgate God knows what I could do with you And it's what it is It's what it is now The garrison sleeps in the citadel With the ghosts and the ancient stones High up on the parapet A Scottish piper stands alone And high on the wind The highland drums begin to roll And something from the past just comes And stares into my soul And it's cold on the tollgate With the Caledonian blues Cold on the tollgate God knows what I could do with you And it's what it is It's what it is now What it is It's what it is now There's a chink of light, there's a burning wick There's a lantern in the tower Wee willie winkie with a candlestick Still writing songs in the wee wee hours On Charlotte Street I take A walking stick from my hotel The ghost of Dirty Dick Is still in search of little nell And it's what it is It's what it is now Oh, it's what it is What it is now
Just walk around Edinburgh with this song in your headphones and you’ll get the chills. Many outline what a great guitarist Mark is, and on occasions how great of a singer he has become, but to me what really sticks is his ability to write songs like a novelist or a journalist and keep me captivated. I am forever thankful for his contribution not only to music, but also to the betterment of the soul.
Seeing the bridges on the Forth brings back nice memories of living in Edinburgh and commuting through to Dunfermline to see my parents. Awesome stuff!
Had a few cars like that in my time... Mark Knopfler is timeless, first saw him live in Sheffield UK 1980, a day that I will never ever forget. Thank you Mark.
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.............

one of the best songs of MK.. lyrics are amazing .. for me Knopfler is the best.. very sad to see so less views..people nowadays cant even appreciate real music..good luck listening to shitty songs and awful lyrics..
Is one of the SEVERAL musics from Mark that you cant stop to listen. Incredible. I listen 100 times and you become angry time is over!! I not even can understand why... Another SKYDIVER, another DONE WITH BONAPARTE....
@@scottrichard5792 A favourite MK song? No - that varies according to which one I'm listening to at the moment. Picking a real favourite - just not possible - they're all so good!
@@scottrichard5792 Apart from Mark Knopfler/Dire Straits, I have a wide mix of tastes. I like dance music - because I like to dance (R&R/jive, Latin, folk, ballroom), and I like to play folk dance/ceilidh music (for others to dance to). But I like a lot of other music too.
Almost every line in this song is amazing. And that's just the start. Incredible guitar work and amazing vocals layer on top. Probably the best song ever.
