I've always felt like Mark's music is my own little secret of the greatest music ever. Can't make everyone like his style, but as for me, nothing compares.
@@jekku4688 it's never too late to enjoy good music ... and with Lanegan there is lots to delve into ... Heck, there is a record that just came out in the Fall that I am just getting around to right now .. an electronic collaboration Mark did with this guy from Icarus Line called "Dark Mark vs Skeleton Joe" -- it's really spooky & cool!
I really have to give a round of applause to the interviewer. He is professional AND actually understands where ML is coming from, unlike others I've seen. Great interview. R.I.P. Mark Lanegan
Mark's music is great for both dark and fun times. When you're going through a rough patch you listen to him and feel he's been there (and lived through many scarier experiences than yourself, probably) and when you're feeling good, well, you just appreciate the beauty and poetry his work is imbued with. Without a doubt a great songwriter who deserves a place among the greatest of the great.
Bubblegum got me through the worst parts of my life, and Somebody's Knocking helps me get through the best parts. He can bring tears to my eyes or he can make me want to dance.
I love these comments shown before my own, really touched by them. I found Mark's music and his voice as a kindred spirit to me as I struggled through my own life with lots going on which I had no control but after those troubles subsided, his songs helped me get my life together again. I'm no humpty dumpty and I think it requires a certain intelligence, remorse and empathy to relate to the depth of his songs which can turn a lot of people off from feeling so deep about things. Life is rushed and skimming across the surface seems to be the way to deal with too many subjects and the real issues stand still gaining boldness and weight in wait to be really dealt with.
100%. Mark was always brutally honest. And yet that voice was like a warm blanket. I can't really explain why I've been so saddened by his passing. It's different. I don't normally fuss too much about celebrities passing. Just really going to miss that guy.
I always envied those that could skim across the surface of various aspects of life. I always over thought Everything! Lanegan always made me feel a little more comfortable with that part of my personality. Just knowing another human being Gets It!!
Always remains in my top 10 or so Artists. A lot of times I will often have my "now" bands, but Mark is always there. Never gets old, and he puts out new music frequently. Never released a bum recording. Also the fact that he is involved with many other established acts and collaborators makes him even more interesting.
I can honestly say he is one of my few music "heros". If I had the breaks and the talent, I would loved to have a career like his. The substance of the material far outweighs massive commercial success. I'd be so proud to have the catalog that he does, including the Screaming Trees. The quintessential garage psychedelic band of the 80s and 90s. I thought they deserved more commercial success, but of course that seldom equates to good music.
i saw your first concert with the trees in Paradiso amsterdam.one of the vanconner brothers fell down on the stage before playing, that"s was fun only not for him after that i saw all the years all your concerts in holland, till now,you know why, because your voice sounds like magic for me that"s why mark and you are getting better and better and better, yeah man that"s the way to do it.thanks you for your interview,i love it and keep it as a remembering from the best singer of the world.now in dutch...ik vind jou cd live in leeds de allerbeste, gewoon accousties met alleen jouw stem als muziek en das meer als genoeg en rosser op gitaar oh heerlijk, dank je mark lanegan/pierre
I was introduced to Screaming Trees in the early 90’s and I didn’t care much for it. Acquiring Whiskey For the Holy Ghost based on good reviews I also took a while to really hear Mark’s voice as the incredible thing it is. Being a big fan of JLP and Gun Club it blew me away he also liked them. To be as blessed as Mark is with such a profoundly deep and resonant voice as his and to be so charmingly humble is really the kicker. His melodies are always interesting and his approach extremely engaging. He is one example that supports my premise that great singers are born not made. If Tom Waits and Jim Morrison were physically related Mark could easily be the kid brother of those two. His is the marriage of Leonard Cohen and Cash, Frank Sinatra and Jeffrey Lee Pierce. Just a gifted artist and funny and self-effacing to boot. Brilliant.
@@MissMarie1377 - I appreciate that. I don’t mean anything except the vocal timbre of his voice, not the “lizard king “ persona nonsense. Jim Morrison, in spite of all the infamous hype, had a great voice. So does Mark.
Mark is so cool and charming, the cutest bad boy of grunge!!! love him very very much, when is the next tour? Mark's voice is running trough the veins till it reaches the heart& soul great artist!!!
I'm into Pink Floyd, early Genesis and early Rush. Big Mike Patton lover n discovered Mark just a couple of months ago. He's a colossus writer n performer. It amazes me I hadn't heard of him earlier. His music stands shoulder to shoulder with the very best. A rare bird. x
I've never particularly liked John Robb as a commentay voice or interviewer, but this is a great interview bringing out the best in Mark and I can appriciate that.
It’s a great interview. I actually saw these two perform at the roundhouse in London in Dec 19, before the world turned upside down. Shortly after Mark and his wife Shelley made their move to Killarney, Ireland and the rest is history. RIP brother
When Mark said he wrote the songs on only the last 2 Trees albums. I thought "those were the only two that were hugely popular" and he then said the exact same thing. Those are also the two that I like almost all the songs on, as well. Hmm. The man has the most gloriously beautiful voice. And his lyrics are profound and fascinating, also a bit dark (like me). 🖤💋😍
johny baltimore I'm not denying that fact, good music all, but psychedelia was never a favorite of mine. More into the smoother more mellow stuff. Just getting old I guess.
It's funny how Mark so carefully avoids mentioning the names of his bandmates in Screaming Trees. Listening to the Trees in '91 or so was how I got into Mark's solo albums, so I always hoped him and the Conners would someday be on speaking terms. 25 years is a long time to hold a grudge, even if they were dicks.
@@IOmunE I have no doubt that is accurate. I’ve heard he is clean now which, just from a few interviews I’ve seen, it seems like could very well be the case. People that have the kind of addiction that Mark had only get so many get-out-of-jail free cards before that lifestyle catches up with them, which typically looks like jails, institutions, or death. It seems like he has kept going and been fortunate enough to keep making great music. I would love to see Mark and the Conners make amends and get together for the sake of their fans and play some great music again.
For me those sst years screaming trees is my fav work of Mark's tho...sad to hear he ain't to keen on it .eva way pretty much any thing I hear the guy do has some kind of dark magic too it .and is an all round interesting guy ..and music needs people like this more than ever
Just a few of my favorites= Strange Religion*Wedding Dress*Stay Last One In The World *Ugly Sunday *Ten Feet Tall*Creeping Coastline Of Lights *Shiloh Town*Goodbye To Beauty*Pill Hill Serenade
@@DizGuys his memoir is great and brutally honest. When it came out, even through I am a fan of the guy, I thought "do I need this?""is he so important that he needs a book?" The fact of the matter is he did. Book really helped put that whole era in context.
If you listen to the song “The River Rise” by Mark Lanegan, you can see how much he influenced Kurt Cobain. Kurt could have sang that song and sounded almost exactly the same.
I wish/hope he worked with Queens on their new album. Mark & Josh go way back. I think he did his best work on SFTD. I think he knows deep down inside his drug issues held him back from being a part of bigger things and now he regrets that and it's too late in his career to change that.
Why bother? Because Lanegan was one of the most interesting and influential singers and songwriters of the last 40 years. There’s no one else quite like he was. May he rest in peace.
I don't know if you are trying to be funny but at least spell his name correctly. What the fuck have you done with your life? Not sure why I bothered reading your comment but I ain't so smart.
