my most favorite player of all time. I adored him. Watching him in my teens when the Rangers were running for the cup was such a special time in NYC. I love watching him on the commentary now. Great interview.
I'm not going to look up the details but a friend of mine played for the Blackhawks in the 1980's. I don't remember if it was a conference or Stanley Cup final but a very big game. Tied going into the 3rd period my friend, a VERY tough guy himself, said that Messier played with a look in his eyes that he had never seen before leading the Oilers to a win
The man. the player, a champion- ultimate teammate. Was a joy to watch except playing again Pgh Pens. A young player coming up in the game surely youd want his film ( game has changed )
Played Womens college hockey in the 1970’s…in men’s rec league in my 30’s..interesting that ice hockey was the least intimidating sport I ever experienced. I didn’t mind guys hitting me. I loved the use of boards as a winger..several concussions! A dancer and gymnast as a child not an athlete. This conversation with Mark speaks to the contrasting energies hockey offers up…
I feel like Mark feels he was as great of a player as Gretzky. Having won 2 cups after seperating from Wayne. Gretzky made the finals with the La Kings but that was all.
Actually Messier always undervalued his own worth and always credited his teammates. He adored Gretzky and always said he was the best. The rare thing about Messier is he never had jealousy. He reveled in the achievements of his teammates.
