I'm reading Dr. Crossan's new book right now. Very interesting analysis of Revelations and how it parallels ideas in earlier legends that were familiar to people at the time and place!
The simplest explanation seems to be that the use of the term "Christians" is anachronistic. Revelation could easily have been an apocalyptic Jewish messianic text from near the time of Nero, interpolated later by Christians, and that Nero did not persecute "Christians" because they didn't exist separately yet
@@thaimperial97 But they didn't necessarily, that's the point. Christians were not the only Messianic Jews. There were still other Messiahs after Jesus, most notably Bar Kochba who was actually recognized as the Messiah by the High Priest. The Qumran sect was Messianic as well. Messianic did not have to mean Christian.
@@Ken_Scaletta A christ is a messiah aka priest, king and sometimes even prophet. This is the very reason the Sadducees and Pharisees said that Jesus was not a messiah. You had to be anointed by a Levite priest to even be considered a messiah/christ and by that time all of the tribes were scattered
A quick note about "The Fire of Rome". Rome contended with fires all the time. They had fire departments. They had a major conflagration every decade. This fire started in a pretty old cramped poorer inner district of Rome. Like the Great Fire of London it was probably not deliberately lit. Nero was away from Rome when the fire started but came back to help opening the palace gardens for refuge and supervising food etc. Why he was blamed was that he was not popular with the conservative elements in the Roman upper class who conducted an outrageous smear campaign against him. Nero was most likely unaware of the existence of Christians.
wow. mind blown! I knew 666 was Nero but DJC's explanation of the whole context is completely new to me - the Nero legend being a model of the returning Christ in Revelation. Thank you Derek from bringing the thoughts of these scholars to us.
He's a fictional, distancing insert for the Messiah. Destruction of the Roman occupiers in a fiery apocalypse and the establishment of a "Kingdom of YHWH" is what a Jewish Messiah would have been preaching, not the lovey-dovey stuff. The text is bookended later by Christians with the Letters to the Churches, but the core of Revelation is an anti-Roman Jewish apocalypse/s and is probably the oldest material in the NT.
Also worth a mention that "the hand"and "the head" in greco-roman era satellite state context could refer to military forces: the hand, and "heads" of state. Rome almost always, as can be seen by 1st and 2nd century CE Palestine as one of many examples, appointed their own governing head of state in place of self governance and their own military forces to ensure loyalty when they had overtaken a province. The mark could be referring to Roman physical occupation of a city/state. *The mark is upon the head and the hand.* Makes sense to me.
Slaves were typically marked on their hands or foreheads. Domitian passed a tax on Jews that forced them to pay a tax in order to practice Judaism. He also forced them to use a coin with his face on it. This symbolically branded them as slaves to the Emperor. There is no evidence that Domitian persecuted Christians but he did persecute Jews. James Tabor, among others, has pointed out that explicitly Christian references in Revelation are sparse and superficial and if removed, Revelation reads like a Jewish apocalypse. Christians were not the only Messianic Jews after Jesus. Bar Kochba, for example, was more successful than Jesus. I think Revelation could have been an originally non-Christian Jewish Messianic apocalypse more along the lines of something like Qumran expectations which was later taken over by Jesus Christians.
I don't know where people get such misinformation. The hand and the forehead point to the thoughts and intents of a person, which are carried out by the - hand.
I actually did sit down a year or so back and go through the Hebrew Gematria to get 666 out of Nero's name. (Needs to be the greek version of the name Neron Kaiser. The Latin version of the name Nero Cesar adds up to 616, which apparently also shows up in some textual variants. N=50 in Gematria and all that).

Sounds like thing’s were getting out of hand among the people following the new religion. Like they were making up their own rules that conflicted with a stricter “I’ll alter my Jewish faith” but not that much sect within. In Revelation we have 4 living creatures arising from the sea - lots of trouble and hooha and then the saviour returns. In Roman history we have the year of the 4 emperors - lots of trouble and then Vespasian arises - aka 'the Saviour of Rome'. This only just occurred to me - possible source of inspiration for Revelation? (On the grounds that the NT is, for its authors, recent history retold and stamped with a cross to make it Jesus flavoured).
There's no "Lucifer" in the bible. Satan is never called that. That word comes from the Latin Vulgate translation of a Hebrew word that referred to the planet Venus.

Your historical analysis of Revelation makes this last chapter of the Bible irrelevant to todays Christians who are facing the end times. I don't agree with you at all. Sorry.

So as Revelation indicates in its opening verses, the whole thing is about contemporary or shortly to happen events. Not way in the future crystal ball prophesies. I indicated this to a guy in church once and he was so disgusted that he left and has never returned. How dare I challenge his ideas with correct interpretation!
I’d like it if a mekubal was interviewed by an atheist or similar host to explain how the concepts specifically in BoR was stolen from ancient Hebrew/Jewish sources; because the book of revelation is soaked with kabbalistic references. And I’m Not referring to the cheap and commercialized/Hollywood white girl magic mainstream flavor. I’m pretty much convinced the autographer/s of BoR were familiar with Torah SheBe’alPeh tradition of Zohar. It also appears to be the missing content from Joe Atwill’s Caesars Messiah which would explain many of the gaps.

The 666 was also referenced to Solomon's Kingdom as he received 666 talents of gold yearly from his temples. The modern masons say they are the builders of Solomon's kingdom and design civilization. It is they who instituted this Mark of the beast when they instituted the abomination of Adam's middle sin in the garden, the striking[ / ]of the garden's middle[ + ] .... what is modernly called "circumcision", the striking[ / ]of the child's reproductive[ + ] is the "mark of the beast". Rise out of it or you'll be consumed by it.
I've in recent years considered the error of conflating the languages during this time . Christian's? Messianics? They could be two different things while in the meantime the language suggest they both mean Moshiach. Nero's attitude towards what we now call Christians could have had much to do with what Messianic fervor in Judea , around an expected Messiah and not one that necessarily arrived , and a military response may have been appropriate. It has been suggested that the so called Christian's did in fact start the fires, in response to Neros injustice while trying to pool funds criminally. By the time James was killed and Florus made his move to rob the temple, Jews all across the Empire were ready to take action. I think the character of what the church went on to model Christianity as, whitewashed the very real and natural spirit of revolt that was probably attatched to this original movement. I think the martyrdom attitude came later . A contrivance of sorts.
Tacitus does say the "Chrestians" CONFESSED to starting the fires and Christians supposedly lived in the area around the Circus Maximus where the fire started. No Christian writer ever mentions Nero doing this stuff, though and there are aspects of it that are historically improbable or problematic.

The possibility I have been entertaining is that during Nero's decline the Christisns and the revolt in the Holyland were more linked than we would probably like to entertain. The great fire may have been a direct consequence to foreign policy across the sea. Naturally the character of what is associated with Christian temperaments and behavior today would refuse to consider such an emotional atmosphere. However we are quick to dismiss the possibility of not all members in agreement at all times during the 1st century. I say it is a strong and even likely possibility some guys who identified as Christian's may have been responsible for the fire. I mean the people were on the way to revolt. It is not such a stretch to imagine.
i'm annoying everyone lately with my theory that hell is actually going to be a fun palace. if satan rejected god, and i reject god, why would satan want to torture ME? torturing christians, sure, but me and satan are pals, _god_ wants to torture me, but he can't, cos free will, so if i don't like hell i use my free will to choose to go to the beach. the afterlife is going to be a breeze cos once again, god hasn't planned ahead.
I don't yet see how Revelation is about Rome. The gamatria "666" for Nero doesn't seem like good evidence... and the fact that you can change it to '616' and have it STILL refer to Nero, I think, makes the case weaker. The 7 hills certainly fits Rome. But I need more concrete evidence that Rome is the focus of Revelation.
Apocaliptic literature tends to adress the powers of the time. Daniel, a 2nd century B.C.E text, adresses the oppresion of the Seleucids personified in Antiochus IV. Why would Gamatria that works with both numbers weaken the point? The best being Nero also works very well with the idea of Nero redivivus, a legend that was quite popular during the end of the 1st century (See Sybilline Oracles). The reference to Rome as Babylon makes sense from the perspective of both of them having destroyed the Jersusalem Temple. There are references to the godess Roma, patroness of the city, although the point in the text escapes me. I recommend both Elaine Pagels and also Adela Yarbro Collins' books ok Revelation.
There is actually tons of solid evidence. You just don't seem to want to know about it. The "Whore" is Rome. The "Beast" is the Emperor, particularly the Imperial cult (the deification of Emperors). The seven heads are all the Emperors that were deified. Usually they were deified after death, though. What Domitian had in common with Nero was that they both deified themselves while they were still alive. The number refers to both Nero and Domitian. The gematria works for both of them. Slaves were often branded on their hands or their foreheads. Being forced to use coinage with the Emperor's image on them was seen as symbolically "enslaving" them. It's very common in antiquity to refer to occupying nations as "enslaving" them. Everything maps to Rome, and with any piece of writing you have to read it as what it would have meant to the audience at the time it was written. You don't write prophecies that will only cpome to pass thousands of years in the future and have no meaning to present readers. What would be the point of that? What good would that do anybody? If it's the future, you don't have to even use code. You could just say "watch out for Hitler." No one in the 1st Century would have know what that meant and nobody would have gotten in trouble for it, but in the 1930's everybody would have been ready and said "Aha, there's that Hitler guy. Thanks Bible." Why write anything at all if no one can understand it? Why write in a manner that looks exactly like you're talking about circumstances of your own day? Maybe you haven't read much about the genre of Jewish apocalypse, but that's exactly what Revelation is and acopalyposes were *always* talking about circumstances in the time they were written, usually during a time of crisis. There is no doubt that Revelation is about Rome. None whatsoever. It never had to do with our time or our future. It's a failed Jewish apocalypse. It failed 2000 years ago.
I don't think the gamatria of 666 or 616 reveals that the Beast to be Nero. Instead the Beast is represented as kingdoms. Where five have fallen.... as if Revelation is using the same imagery of a man which represented kingdoms. The number of a man is the imagery of Daniel's visions of a man which represented kingdoms. Of which one seem to die came come back to life. Greece when Alexander the Great died the kingdom was at first seem to be dead. But his general kept the kingdom alive. So it's my opinion that the imagery seem to point to pagan kingdoms of which by then 5 had fallen and one is .... I don't think the writer of Revelation was telling about Nero , but about the leviathan. Again Daniel's vision of a man
Thanks for the reply. I agree it's Rome he's discussing, but I like to be virtually certain. The point about apocalyptic visions referring to the then-current situation is compelling. I'll give an example of why the 666/616 doesn't "do it" for me... at least at this point. When I first heard Daniel 9 explained, I was told that it predicted that the Messiah would die in 33... and guess what, Jesus died in 33! Then I heard there was an explanation that said he died in 30... and guess what, Jesus died in 30! That showed me how arbitrary one can be when interpreting something. You can put "Nero" in Greek, and it comes out to 666, and then in Latin, and it's 616. I have a feeling you could do that with many names, and change the language, and they come out to 666 or 616. Someone pointed out below that "Christ" is 666, but I don't know if that's accurate.
@@mjt532 the issue I have with the gamatria it when it's used for the Greek and that it's not simply Nero, Nero Ceasar which isn't his full name either. I'm more incline to think it's denoting the Beast and not anyone man. As stated before Daniel had a vision of a man and it was of kingdoms. Revelation use that same imagery. And by the way the book of Daniel don't prophey of Jesus , but rather a anointed one. All in context around the of the restoration of Israel from Babylon and the troubled time by Antiochus IV.

And 666 will be given by the last pope. His name will most likely add to 666 in latin. Just look at the roman numerals. The first 6 add up to 666. So an Italian pope named Vulduci. Where the v and the u are both 5.
Revelation rely on the book of Daniel and Ezekiel though many of its images. Those show that the Beasts from the sea represented pagan kingdoms. Babylon, Median , Persian and Greece. Revelation shows a Beast coming up of the the sea heaving seven heads and denotes these as seven kingdoms with seven kings. So it importance to understand that what is shown is seven pagan kingdoms from the past , then present. The writer said 5 had fallen and o e is ( Rome).. What the writer wants the reader to know is to not give up the time is soon. So not to be deceived and not align with this pagan kingdom Beast such as them before. So Rome. Nero is only 1/7 of the Beast.

@@truecolors5413 Possibly the only literal thing in the Revelation is that the book was written to the 7 churches in Asia. The BIG problem today is that the church has built fearful & terrible doctrines around it. Let me liken it to this for you, in the hope that you might have a better understanding: Let's say you're walking along a beach somewhere & spot an ancient bottle on the sand & inside is discovered a two thousand year old letter. This letter is written to someone you don't know, under circumstances which you have no idea about, giving very specific instructions about a gruesome ordeal this person is about to encounter and you decide that even though it's an ancient letter addressed to someone else, regarding events you really know nothing or maybe very little about... that the letter was written to YOU.
This is one of the cognitive dissonances that I had. What does God have to do with numerology. Really? He is using abstract numbers to predict the second coming and to understand the conspiracy? Really? I felt at the time, even though I still believed, that that was weird.

I have tested the spirit and it is the Holy Spirit he has done so much in my life bringing me from the world and to Jesus and this is what the Holy Spirit said to me in my spirit when I came and asked God believing like a child trusts a parent fully and without question and in humbleness. The other not yet come and is in for a short space is Joe Biden that is the raiser of taxes from Daniel 11 20. Then shall stand up in his estate a raiser of taxes in the glory of the kingdom: but within few days he shall be destroyed, neither in anger, nor in battle. Barack Obama is the eighth and he was of the previous kings before him and he is the person in Daniel 11 21. And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries. @@zen-sufi The woman is "the great city" (Rev17:18) "The great city" is the city where "our Lord was crucified" (Rev11:8) Jesus was slain in first century Jerusalem The woman = first century Jerusalem It's not about a failed destruction of Rome. It was a prophecy about the actual destruction of Jerusalem.
@Chris Cuomo That's the Historicist view, but the papacy can't be Mystery Babylon. This was already fulfilled in that generation as Jesus said. These were things that would "soon take place". Historicism is a system, like several others, that attempts to stretch the prophecy into our future. The high priest wore jewels on the ephod and breastplate, see Ex. 28. That's an image of the high priest not the papacy. Mystery Babylon is directly said to be a city. Revelation aligns directly with the Olivet discourse. Compare Rev. 18:24 with Matt. 23 Revelation 18:24 (NASB20) “And in her was found the blood of *prophets* and of saints, and of *all who have been slaughtered on the earth* .” Matthew 23:35-37 (NASB20) 35 so that upon you will fall the guilt of *all the righteous blood shed on earth* , from the blood of righteous Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom you murdered between the temple and the altar. 36 “Truly I say to you, all these things will come upon *this generation* . 37 “ *Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets* and stones those who have been sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.
@Chris Cuomo Two things... 1. The beast had seven heads that also were seven hills. This was Rome. Mystery Babylon (Jerusalem) was riding the beast. She is not related to the seven hills. The passage is saying Jerusalem had been propped up by Rome (riding the beast), but Rome turned on her burned her and left her desolate (Rev. 17:16) You're viewing the image as a composite. That would make Rome burn itself. 2. The destruction of Jerusalem is not a shadow of a future tribulation. That was the tribulation. That's why Jesus said that generation would not pass away before it happened. Pushing the tribulation into our future creates a problem in sequence. The effect of the tribulation per the text (Matt 24, Luke 21, Mark 13) was the judgment and scattering of the people of Judea. This already happened. They just got back to the land. Positing a future tribulation, has them immediately being exiled again. That's not what the text is saying. The events of the tribulation happened in that generation. John, writing at the end of that generation, said the trib was ongoing while he was writing. These were things that would soon take place Revelation 1:1 (NASB20) The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show to His bond-servants, the things which *must soon take place* ; and He sent and communicated it by His angel to His bond-servant John, Revelation 1:9 (NASB20) I, John, your brother and fellow *participant in the tribulation* and kingdom and perseverance in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus. We don't have to guess at the symbols.
@Chris Cuomo You're going by a system of interpretation that was used to support a view that Christ's coming in judgment on Israel is in our future. 1. Tribulation of Matt. 24/Luke 21 does not happen after the regathering. It was the event that actually initiated the exile. Luke 21:23-24 (NASB20) 23 “...for there will be great distress upon the land, and wrath to this people; 24 and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations... This was already fulfilled 2000 yrs ago. They've already endured the effects of this tribulation. Moving it into our future posits a time when immediately after their return they are scattered again. This is incorrect. There are events that happen post regathering, but the tribulation is not one of them. When Jesus said that generation, He wasn't playing with words. Throughout the gospels "this generation" means the generation He was speaking to. Only in the Olivet discourse do we start playing with the definition. This is because we don't see the link to the Old Testament and which prophecies are being confirmed. It's solely about the fall of Jerusalem. 2. The gospel reaching remote islands is not what Matt. 24 is speaking of. The word for "world" there is "ouikoumene". It denoted the empire. Not the whole world. The word for the whole world was kosmos. Paul in several places said the gospel had already gone out to all the nations in his day. In context, this was so the nations would understand the significance of God's hand in the fall of Jerusalem. This is why the church grew so rapidly among the Gentiles. 3. There is no seven year peace treaty. This is taking Daniel's 70th week as being unfulfilled. That prophecy was fulfilled at the fall of Jerusalem. The covent spoken of there in the first 3 1/2 years of the final week was Christ's covenant - not a treaty by an Antichrist. There is nothing in the text that speaks of a "treaty". That's in the imagination of modern prophecy teachers.
@Chris Cuomo You're taking apocalyptic language literally. It's called de-creation language (i.e. like the world is falling apart). Revelation boils down to the destruction of a city at its climax. We're meant to go back to the Old Testament to understand it. Take Joel 2, the literal invading army is prophesied metaphorically as locusts. This is where the Matt. 24 language largely comes from. We learn the invading army is the one making the sun go dark. This is the same army Jesus pointed to that would desolate Jerusalem by the end of that generation. Joel 2:10 (NASB20) BEFORE THEM (i.e. the Roman army) the earth quakes, The heavens tremble, The sun and the moon become dark, And the stars lose their brightness. This is also picked up in Rev. 9 as the locusts who have the power to sting but not kill for five months....At the fall of Jerusalem, the Roman army under General Titus surrounded the city for five months from April to September before they breached the walls. This period of being boxed in lead to severe famine and pestilence inside the city. This is the famine and pestilence prophesied in Revelation. Revelation was a near-term prophecy. As far as Dan. 9, there's nothing about it that's future. We're given the scope and conclusion in the text. Daniel 9:24-26 (NASB20) 24 “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and YOUR HOLY CITY...26...And its END will come with a flood; even to the end there will be WAR; DESOLATIONS are determined. The scope of the prophecy is the holy city and the termination is the desolation of the city in war. This is the same thing Jesus was pointing to - the same thin Revelation was pointing to. There's no warrant to extract a week from the prophecy and arbitrarily move it 2000 years into the future from when it was supposed to terminate. The fictitious future Antichrist is a proxy to hold together a system that's based on the flawed premise of disregarding Jesus' words and moving the great tribulation into our future. Passages that are about various different people/events are all assigned to the mythical Antichrist to prop up the system.
Revelation 13:3 One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and followed the beast. Can anyone explain to me why Revelation 13:3 is not an allusion to this account by Josephus? "In the mean time, Josephus, as he was going round the city, had his head wounded by a stone that was thrown at him; upon which he fell down as giddy. Upon which fall of his the Jews made a sally, and he had been hurried away into the city, if Caesar had not sent men to protect him immediately; and as these men were fighting, Josephus was taken up, though he heard little of what was done. So the seditious supposed they had now slain that man whom they were the most desirous of killing, and made thereupon a great noise, in way of rejoicing. This accident was told in the city, and the multitude that remained became very disconsolate at the news, as being persuaded that he was really dead, on whose account alone they could venture to desert to the Romans. But when Josephus's mother heard in prison that her son was dead, she said to those that watched about her, That she had always been of opinion, since the siege of Jotapata, [that he would be slain,] and she should never enjoy him alive any more. She also made great lamentation privately to the maid‐servants that were about her, and said, That this was all the advantage she had of bringing so extraordinary a person as this son into the world; that she should not be able even to bury that son of hers, by whom she expected to have been buried herself. However, this false report did not put his mother to pain, nor afford merriment to the robbers, long; for Josephus soon recovered of his wound, and came out, and cried out aloud, That it would not be long ere they should be punished for this wound they had given him. He also made a fresh exhortation to the people to come out upon the security that would be given them. This sight of Josephus encouraged the people greatly, and brought a great consternation upon the seditious." (Josephus’ Wars of the Jews, Book 5, Chapter 13, paragraph 3. ) If Revelation 13:3 is understood as an allusion, then it becomes very clear that this "Beast" represents the Roman army with Josephus as one of it's "heads".
