Long time friend Mark brought me his beautiful 1977 Corvette to get the transmission swapped out, and to also get his driver's side window working. Enjoy!
Thanks Ben for fixing my baby! The work and the price you gave me was awesome! The loose window was fixed by installing weatherstripping ...Im 65 yrs old and my days doing these jobs are over. Glad Ben Friend is my Friend!
My last trans I went down to Harbor freight and picked up a trans jack and OH boy did that help. That said. my car lift is in a box in front of the shop as we speak. I am doing a body off on a one owner 68 roadster like the one Dad and I rebuilt in 74. When you pulled out of your driveway and step on your friends car I remembered my 1st time. The sound and the power looking over the fenders and the hood made this 17 year old a believer forever. Plus the roadster has a feeling of freedom only William Wallace could understand. Keep up the good work as long as you can and when they pull your cold dead hands off your ratchet you will have died a happy man!
Ben, this is EXACTLY the kind of video us C3 nuts love. Taking an original and talking through fault finding and rectification to keep it original is what you are so good at. Keep it up man!
It's amazing how many mechanics don't take the time needed to diagnose the issue correctly and just jumps straight to replacing parts with new parts and not even checking if it actually fixed the issue or not. Anyway, great job as always Ben, and thank you for the upload...always a pleasure and extremely satisfying to watch your videos.
another awesome video, quick story I had my wife's 79 Torque Convertor stored in my dry storage for a couple years, had my racing buddy build her transmission and I brought her good clean torque convertor with me.I got the transmission back and he stated to me I don't know anything about this torque Convertor and I thought no problem I will use it again it was new in 2002 if I remember correct. Long story short it seems it got moved on it's side at one point and it slightly rubbed when we started driving the Vette. IT filled every part of the transmission with a slight metal fillings and needless to say we had to completely rebuild it again and ad a new torque convertor, lesson learned ,go through torque convertor as well, just a tip from experience. Love your show... and get a outside 4 poster for those quick jobs...
Thank you sir I’m a 77 year old retired veteran. Brought my 1980 vette to AAmco real bad leak well 800.00 dollars plus tax all new seals and oil. I love the car.love your channel God Bless Al
With the beanie hat you are almost TheCorvetteIvan (Pine Hollow). Always great to be able to watch and learn something, even though I will likely only be a Corvette owner vicariously through others. Unless the right C4 comes around...
You are the master when it comes 2 Corvettes! Sometime ago you asked your viewers what they wanted to see as I restoration. Here's an idea when was the last time you saw a 1972 Buick Riviera or a Oldsmobile Toronado. You just do not see ladies boat tail cars anywhere.
Being 63y.o. now,I wouldn't be able to lay on the ground or garage floor to unhook anything :-( Would definitely need a lift. My neighbor has a lift that can be moved about if needed, don't know the name of it though. Anyway..another great and informative vid Ben..love your channel!
I bought a transmission jack it's easier Harbor Freight has them that's a whole Jack it's a jack adapter for years figured Jack you know what I mean and you have to have a long half inch three or four of those bellhousing bolts what a pain in the butt
great to see a new one from you..kinda missed you...hope the new baby and mommy are doing good...tip if you want..take a yoke off one of your old shafts and use that in the trans to keep fluid from blasting out of the tail shaft..some use a plastic bag and a tie strap...i did once and tore the bag open...Fail!!!! any way your doing a great job...thanks for posting...Jim from snohio...
I had a window shake too on my door window. I had to replace one of the roller wheels on my window rail as it had failed. Getting that scissor our of the door is not fun. Re transmission; I got rid of my step up. Too many issues leaking. Just put silicone and bolted it shut. I just drop it in 2nd if I wanna pass. Another tip on my end is a oil "catch can" between the pcv and the intake. It traps quite a bit of oil that would have been burned in the top end. I probably take out a cup of oil every 3000 miles. And Yes I would pay someone to do that job. My days of dropping transmissions is over :)
Put an aftermarket dipstick in mine. Too many leaks originating from that oring system. Also eliminated the step up cable. Just step up manually. Eliminated all leaks. Driver window shakes more due to one of the rollers (upper left) that has broken. It is a bit of a pain to get those window scissors inside and out....A bit pricey at 50 bucks for new rollers though.
Love your videos Ben. Keep em coming. I have a 78 I’m restoring. Can you do a video on how to change ball joints in upper and lower a arms. They have rivets in them. Don’t know how to tackle that.
I just did this but I used a lionel train transformer for a power supply, you could Also use a Marx toy train transformer wich you can find for about 5 bucks, also thankyou for showing me that I didn't need to take out the regulator to get the motor out.lol
Thanks Ben for another great video I've love them all! I might be able to suggest some advice from an electronics prospective. If A device is measuring a positive to both sides it means one of two things. A it's a short to ground Not good it's stuffed. Open circuit to ground? You did this on your 77 return from the grave. Check it's earth!!. But the earth failure could be in the alternator or generator on older cars you but it's worth checking.
The 'simple' things we forget like the ground needed to complete the circuit. And the pvc hose. ????? Reminds me though that I needed to change mine. Thanks for sharing.
TheCorvetteBen yup been there done that. Sometimes it’s as simple as a tightening or readjust other times it means spending money to rebuild the whole window regulator assembly.
Another great teaching video! I have a lift in my shop, you'll find that you won't " Age" as fast physically, When you are not working in cramped quarters on your back! P.S. I noticed your hat,you a Marine? If so Semper Fi brother.
I will take the trans swap out of the 77 if you do my servo swap on my 2005 yukon with the 4l60e. LOL even though it was short, it was worth the watch...thanks!!
Ben, love your videos! Thanks for the great work, was just wondering what city you're in, been working on my 77 for over 10 years and may finally need an expert eye. Thanks! Semper Fidelis, David.
IF UR STILL LOOKING FOR A LIFT CHECK OUT VICE GRIPS GARAGE CHANNEL N IN HIS PLAY LIST HE HAS AN EPISODE ON WHEN HE GETS ONE N ITS PERFECT FOR WHAT U NEED
did the floppy window get fixed? was wondering what had to happen to get it to work...mine has the same problem. good looking '77, white with red is a good combo
Got a question for you. How much would you expect a driver quality 1974 454 Convertible Corvette to cost. That's kinda been my dream car for awhile, and I'm wanting to know a good starting price to start saving up for. Thanks
Why didn't you talk about the most important stuff like cooler clean and rear main seal checking torque converter for wear and spacing and to make sure it's the sports car converter and not the station wagon converter unless you like it to shift like a grandma car
The tach runs off a cable driven by a gear on the side of the distributor. Likely a stripped gear in the distributor, which is common and easily replaced.
