Marklin's Magnificent Model Steam & Electric Machine Shop

This the only known surviving example of Marklin's steam workshop or "machine hall" model no. 4283 produced from 1904-09. The workshop is slightly smaller than its sister model 4284; these were among the largest, most complex, and expensive "toys" ever offered by the company. It was advertised to run on either live steam from the vertical engine (no. 4112/11) or with its electric motor using house current. Belting up the steam engine to the electric motor gives the impression that the steam engine is also running in the second half of the video. The miniature switchboard was made of slate with a faux marble finish; its tiny working rotary switches control the lights and electric motor.

Incredible find! Excellent recreation work to complete the workshop using the original parts specific to this model.

Just to be clear, all of the component parts inside the building are from the original Marklin model 4283 including the steam engine, electric motor, switchboard, all the machine tools, blower, overhead lineshaft, overhead crane, the three tinplate doors, and chimney. The original tinplate building had been discarded by a previous owner leaving only solder marks on the lineshaft showing where it had been disassembled. The tinplate building itself is a replica of the original based on catalog descriptions, mages and photos of another example (a slightly larger 4284 model) which was sold in Germany some years ago.

Amazed that something like this was made. This was a toy for big boys. I wonder what the asking price was in 1904? I can't imagine paying for such a luxury toy and handing it over to a child.
@riderericsson
@riderericsson 7 месяцев назад
Price in 1904 was 350 Deutche Marks which back then was equivalent to approximately $1470. An automobile would have been cheaper. If adjusted for inflation that's about $50,800 in today's dollars. Like today, father's bought expensive toys for their children, but who were they really buying for?
@c55427
@c55427 3 месяца назад
$50k!!! I have several Märklin steam driven tools: saw tables, a drill, hammer mill, etc. I don’t think they kept up with inflation

Actually the Hohenstaufen auctionhouse sold the same model in 2016, with german text on top of the roof. Great model and indeed an absolute rarity.
@riderericsson
@riderericsson 10 месяцев назад
Yes but their's (no. 4284) was the larger and slightly more complex of the two models; mine is the slightly smaller Marklin model 4283. The signs on the roofs of both mine and the Hohenstaufen example are reproductions.

The picture that i saw could have been, from the largest one because the electrical switchboard was different, it was in a 2016 auction advertising . I just found the auction cataloge with the complete sizes this is huge.sorry for my bad englisch
@riderericsson
@riderericsson Год назад
Yes, that was the larger of two models and mine is the (slightly) smaller model. Also, the switchboard on the larger one is not original but was created with Marklin components.

Can the motor also act as a dynamo to power the lights from the engine?
@riderericsson
@riderericsson Год назад
No. The 110V motor can't be used as a dynamo that I am aware of. Lights are also 110V AC.
