There isn't a car company today that comes even close to the cars of the 1920's , 1930's. Back then they knew how to combine beauty and function into one package. Very nice car.

I wish Don had explained the big reason for Rolls Royce's Twin 6 or other large engined cars of the day. 1) It wasn't about Horse Power but Torque, 2) Torque was about avoiding shifting the non-synchromesh crash box, 3)The redline of cars of that period is about 1500 rpm. so the gearing is quite tall, 4) Modern drivers of the Rolls twin 6, for example, usually simply release the clutch slowly in top gear without ever-shifting, unless they have to climb a hill...

Great work, Mr. Osborne. I think you could compare the Marmon to the 56 Continental Mark ll. Rare, for one thing. And so elegantly styled. But with practically no adornment, no decoration.

Thanks Mr Osborne for this video, I love the Marmon, to my personnal taste,the most beautiful american car of the pre war era (no dissrespect to the fabulous Duesenberg and Pierce Arrow... just me ). The engine is fabulous but as Mr Reissner said in comments, it's not only a marvellous engine and it's more than an elegant and "quiet discrete" design, it is a true masterpiece of american Art Deco. It has been designed by Walter Dorwin Teague, I let you google his Kodak design, his radio design, and other achievement. One of the greatest american designer of that era. And as a consequence this car has elegance and style like no other. I love the Hispano and Bugatti from my country with magnificent coachwork; but the Marmon has a style, true style, real style and pure Art Deco with those geometric and pure shapes. That's something you ll find later on the Cord 810, or Rudolph Bauer Duesenberg, but those Marmon are magnificent, and all the interior details are worth the look. We need more of your video Mr Osborne, a real pleasure.

Marmon is an example of my I love early Indiana makes. There were a number of exclusive and advanced makes that were such strong rivals to any other makes.

This is the type of car my dad used to drive during prohibition from Kalamazoo Michigan to Stewart Florida I used to wonder what he was doing, but found out after he passed away. Bootlegging was a big business at the time.

Nice presentation. Marmon was undone by their niche appeal. Niche markets are great as long as you dominate that market. When that pie gets cut into unequal slices.... Fatboy always gets the big piece as Packard found out.. Another Indiana auto maker bites the dust. Well presented and Who was that dapper gentleman in th Marmon 16 ? 👍

Wandering all over his lane and even crossing the solid yellow centerline (which is a fail on a CDL road test) several times does not denote good concentration. Although, in Donald's defense, the steering linkage may have had a lot (too much) play in it. Jay Leno is also bad at lane control too.

Absolutely gorgeous car! It is a remarkable fact that the Marmon 16's good looks were the product of an MIT student, Walter Dorwin Teague Jr., who was working with his father, a noted industrial designer. The younger Teague, who was just 22 in 1932, came up with a very distinctive unornamented look for the Marmons, just so clean and elegant. Only 400 Marmon 16s were built and 75 are estimated to exist today, sadly a much lower survival rate than, say, Duesenbergs. In comparison, more than 4,000 Cadillac V16s were built over 11 years.

Look this whole series up and you will see that he has. At least a few times. Just my opinion, I would rather see both men do their thing independently. I think Donald Osborne would most likely be on an even keel on his own or with a partner doing an episode. Quiet, reserved and to the point. Jay tends to get a little mean when he has people share the camera with him. I have really enjoyed seeing Jay do the "epidemic edition" reviews on Jay Leno's Garage because it has been only him in front of the camera. Jay, to me, tends to pick and be unnecessarily "funny" with other people doing the spots. Put Jay on his own and it is much like watching Donald Osborne do one of these reviews. Much more sophisticated. I love the fact that Donald Osborne has a series like this now. Such an intelligent and collected dude.

1930 to 1960 were the pinnacle of US automotive design. I realize that engineering has come a long way but design and quality of components and fit and finish were incredible at this time.

Marion went on! It survives today as the Marmon Group. The immediate successor, Marmon - Herrington, has to present day produced truck bodies and industrial equipment. I saw a beautiful 1936 Ford Woody wagon that was supplied in period with a Marmon Herrington 4 wheel drive conversion, it was in the family that used it for real estate development. Lot more to the story than Osborne relates here.

My dad owned a Marmon. He let my uncle drive it and my uncle, mother and dad ended up overturned in a ditch. It was a long time ago before WW2.

So well described that I cannot add another word. Duesenberg's are impressive, but pretty ostentatious. The Marmon was always my first choice for 1930's elegance. It would've been my pick in the day, particular this coupe configuration. That tall body with that beautiful understated grill just screams class.

Very nice, and excellent shifting - I did not notice until you mentioned double clutching! I suppose the best candidate for a modern equivalent will likely be an electric car, something with the power of a Tesla Performance with the comfort and quiet of a boulevard cruiser.

Fabulous car! But one can see it lacks the ride of the same period Packard V-12 who pioneered the much more modern coil spring double A-frame front suspension.
