"Marry the Glass.. Date the Body" Leaving Sony Full Frame for the Panasonic Leica 10-25 F1.7 & ZCAM

After struggling to make video work for me using the Sony Full-Frame mirrorless camera bodies. I sold my Sony A7iii and set of primes.
I asked myself the question of "What do I need for my work".. not what do I want or what do others tell me to get.
After researching, I landed on the Panasonic Leica 10-25 and the ZCAM E2 4K. This switch won't be for everyone, but it's been the most pragmatic and sensible move that I've made in my career when it comes to buying gear for what I do to earn a living with my productions.

Never have more true words been spoken when you mentioned basically not working to just buy cameras... I was watching a video about the R5 and I put in the comments, it’s a nice camera but, I really like the results of my GH5 and I have a good MFT lens collection, it does what I want it to do so for now I’m holding off but beautiful camera. I got all kinds of hate 🤣. I don’t understand people chasing the newest body. Its the end result that matters. Especially as you mentioned doing corporate videos, most of those get played in some compressed form over network or sent out in emails or some form that cripples the videos anyways. Also I worked in aerospace and most corporate videos we watched shallow depth of field wasn’t what was desired, the subject of the video was the product so the commentator was talking about something in the background, they wanted it in focus too. Most of the settings as well were well lit. They don’t want customers seeing a dimly lit factory. So a lot of hype over camera bodies is overblown and doesn’t make any sense. For me I’m sticking with MFT until it’s not viable anymore. I’m hoping the GH6 comes out so all of my lenses carry over and they fix a couple things like autofocus, maybe make 4K60 10Bit and I’ve read they were experimenting with an organic sensor for improved low light with an electronic ND filter, that would be cool too. You gotta get the gear that makes sense. There is a video about a guy on RU-vid who bought a red camera instead of a house and he basically says it didn’t work out for him. Could you imagine a red camera how much it devalues, the expensive cards, the cinema lenses too? For what? Better quality that only you will notice before you render your final video? I just subscribed maybe I’ll hear more stuff from you that makes sense 😋👍

Awesome choice, I think this pandemic is making us to think clearer about our choices, the ones that we really need, I’m just a hobbyists and have like 7 cameras, I’m selling everything but my pany gx85 and keeping only one lens to challenge myself, the Leica 15mm 1.7, so my lens cost more than the body, love that concept.

I totally agree, I’ve a Lumix body with the 12-35: f2.8 and so I don’t worry about dust on my sensor as the lens never comes off, I shoot photos and can’t find a more reliable workhorse... Full frame is over rated for video. The Leica 10-25mm f/1.7 produces a DOF equivalent to f/3.4 on full frame which is more than good enough. I love the 10-25, I own it too for my GH5. I would like to see a tele companion, say, 35-75mm f/1.7. Who knows, maybe it will be announced alongside the GH6 in late February. The 100-400 you own is also an amazing lens. This setup you have is fantastic and it doesn't over heat either!

The 10-25 is the best all-around fast native zoom for the m43 system that has auto focus... it might be the only one actually and it’s brilliant. The wide 10mm end is so useful for indoor shooting. It’s a bag of fast primes in one lens that makes is so versatile and practical.
@SMGJohn
@SMGJohn 2 года назад
Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 has AF too which works really well on any camera out there but its 100g heavier at 810g and requires intelligent adapters for MFT. On MFT and APS-C, primes will always be cheaper and more compact than these super fast zooms, given you need 2 - 3 primes for one 1.7 or 1.8 zoom, but for gimbal work or just ordinary work, primes would be less tiring, but you need to git gud when it comes to planning cause you gonna spend 5 seconds changing primes to shoot a scene, not always something doable in a hurry.

Weird how there can be 'magic' in a lens, but rarely in a camera... The G9 is an ergonomic masterpiece, but that only makes it a great 'holder' for a lens. And when a lens feels good and looks good, and matches one's own 'vision', its a keeper. In my Nikon kit, it's the old Nikkor 85mm f1.8 D lens, which has always served me well. For Lumix, those Leica endorsed lenses really are a bit special (although I'd like to like more the plastic 25mm Summilux with chattering AF...). And you can't beat feeling settled working with a camera and lens combo, to do better work.

Agreed! Good choices. We got so caught up with the camera's when at the end of the day... is still just a box with a whole in it! It's the quality glass that makes it all happen. Hope Panasonic comes out with a GH6 that can focus with internal 4K 10 bit up to 120 fps all-i no crop. They will have another BIG winner and show MFT is NOT dead :) Cheers

I have sort of done this recently, but not quite a specific lens. I love wildlife, which means long lenses are important to me. I went from the highly capable Nikon D500/Nikkor 200-500 5.6 to m4/3 because the Nikon kit weighed about five tons(well, somewhere around 7 pounds/3 kilos), and it was too big and heavy to be really enjoyable. I used Panasonic briefly before switching to Olympus because I liked the auto focus better. After about two years, however, I found that noise at high iso was a little more than I wanted, and I thought about getting Sony, but then I'd be back into BIG glass. I ended up settling on the Fuji X-mount as a good compromise of size/performance. Anyway, that's my journey so far. Great video, as always!

@@TerraThink I'm necroposting a bit, but I had the Canon 800 and an R5, and I just sold them to come back to 4/3. The main issue(which fits the theme of this video nicely) is that the 800, and the excellent RF 100-400, aren't weather sealed. My options were adapter older, 3rd party lenses, spending around $1500-2000 to adapt and EF 100-400(which often isn't long enough), spend a LOT on the RF 100-500, or.... spend $1500 on a used G9 and used Pany 100-400. The Canon still has advantages, obviously, but not worth it for an enthusiast who's not making any money off these cameras.

Ah man I love the tin roof apartment! This is an interesting thought, since I just left Fuji and I was feeling quite restricted by Fuji’s beautiful but “non-adaptable” lens line-up. Granted I have moved to MFT which is apparently dying but I like the new versatility I have with various lens brands, and working with two different camera brand bodies.

Good points well said Connor. People are crazy. Pros don't fanny about just getting the latest and greatest they just get the best they can that cover what they need to do their job well and produce stuff that gets them paid and more work. Too many people lust after a farari when they need a 4 x 4 and a boot or a good quality van. As a photo first video second person I'd like some videos on editing from the g9 and how best to send etc. I suppose what to capture in, what to edit in (and how) and how to send. I think lots of people want to embrace video more but all the 422 internal, downscaling to 10.80, 60 fps vs 24 etc is complex :)

Great video Connor - really hit home with me as I feel like I'm in a similar situation; been shooting my GH5 / GH5s combo for a while now but as I get more work (and feel more and more like a REAL professional haha!) there's that pressure of "maybe I should invest in a serious professional camera?". I love my panasonics, never thought I needed full frame (or even S35) but you're always tempted by the fancy camera bodies. I've never thought about approaching it from the lens point of view first, so that 10-25 has got me thinking... Also kudos on the recent videos, love the relaxed approach. Congrats on the new gaf man! Looks sweet :D

I wish I saw this video before making my X-T3 purchase. I soldy GH4 and could have purchased a G9 and 12-35 f2.8. Instead o got caught up in the 'body' hype as well as the fuji 'hype'. Now, I find myself looking for that 12-35 equivalent and realizing that Fuji does not have a great zoom lineup. The closest is the 18-60 f4. Although my wife would kill me, I could totally sell the X-T3 and get a G9.

@CreativeConnor
@CreativeConnor 3 года назад
If they can get a pro 20-60 FF with proper manual focus clutch and a fast constant aperture it will be insane(has to be a workable size though)! Have to say the 10-25 is just wonderful and pretty much ideal for me. If I was going to step up to the FF sensor the Zcam F6 with EF glass is becoming so affordable secondhand now you can get the pro EF 16-35, 24-70 and 70-200 used for a bargain. And although it's now the old mount the EF is so good it'll be adapted for years and years to come
@fellowcitizen
@fellowcitizen 3 года назад
@@CreativeConnor Down the track, the "LEICA Certified" S PRO 24-70mm F2.8 (S-E2470) is probably the closest equivalent FF, as the S PRO lenses are built the same way (they are literally the "Panasonic Leica" lenses, but can't be called Leicas without causing confusion with the Leica-SL/TL lenses). It seems like the focus-ring etc characteristics of the 10-25 were developed for the Lumix L-mount cameras and then applied to the m4/3 just for that lens, so you could expect them to operate even better on the L-mount with new protocols for selecting focus throw etc. Although the non-S PRO lenses like the 20-60 are probably excellent, I don't think that they're constructed with that degree of control as a priority. Then again, I noticed that some of the firmware for the S1H etc has included compatibility improvements with the Sigma lenses as well, so they 're taking the collaboration seriously rather than simply competing on the same mount as they did with Olympus. The Head of Lumix stated the other day that they are aiming to be the main mount for videography. Cine D have excellent coverage of theses details.

9:27 - whats the light grey band around the lens? Is it something to lock the focus/aperature ring or is it connected to the zoom ring to operate the zoom remotely?

My problem is that I love my lenses in I have a somewhat sizeable collection now, just that I'm not getting what I want from the camera bodies now. Modern convenience. I was able to set up my GX9 to automatically upload to Google Photos over WiFi, but the API access level is ridiculous, and it's limited to JPGs, and it's bit clear if the camera is uploading and I have to manually turn on that upload destination every time I turn the camera on. Urgh, why so bad. Honestly, at this point, I'd take a m43 by Google, to running Android, using their visual core computational photography. In camera editing yes please, auto HDR, oh my, I need it.

Loving your videos. I want to buy new camera for the video work. not able to figure out whether to go MFT or Full frame. i like MFT for the crop factor and zoom you get but i am very concerned about the low lights etc. what you will suggest to buy? I am just starting. I have great deal on G85 but what do you think? is it still great in 2020 the image quality? thank you

Can be a tricky question, we don't really know how serious Pana are about m4/3 any more since they're now making full frame cameras. So wait to to see how the GH6 turns out or get a GH5s if you still want something more compact.

@@mikey7326 Yaa I know there is question of m4/3 future. but anyway i got G85 for very good deal. as i wanted to make videos and wanted to have more zoom function.

I love my 10-25mm, it is an awesome lens. However, when I use the continuous autofocus and the internal mic of my GH5, I can hear the AF motor on my videos. I wonder if you have the same "issue" ?

I'll be honest I haven't come across this yet. But I'll check it out and see if I can hear it 🙂

Slows I’ve read of a few people having this issue. If you’re still in your return window (I see your comment is from a month ago), you should exchange it for another copy. I have the 10-25 and have never experienced loud AF during video.

@@JeremyHalterman Yes it is what I did, no problem on my new copy, the noise is far less louder. However I bought a full frame Panasonic last month and I hesitate to sell the 10-25mm to buy either the 16-35 f/4 or the 24-70mm Pro. I love the 10-25mm rendering but from what I see about the 24-70 Pro reviews, the lens seems awesome as well !

Slows Looks like the only thing you lose moving to the 24-70 is the de-clicked aperture, which I personally never take advantage of anyway. An S1H with the 24-70 is pretty much my dream combo.

Could NOT watch this because the image kept jumping forth and back. Very annoying! Is this intentional? It's ridiculous!
