I'm glad you did an honest review. Many channels claim it's perfect for home use (which is what I'm on the hunt for). I was hoping with this an attenuator wouldn't be needed. Great video!

You can use it without an attenuator though! It’s just that tube amps in general all sound better when cranked!
@drummerjoey003

That is a great tube amp. I’ve had mine for a few years and it’s great sounding. I tried mine through a 1 12” boss katana speaker, which didn’t sound great. I built a cab from 1” thick plywood for 2 10” eminence speakers and it sounds amazingly clear.

I used to own this amp for about 3 years an then sold it. The reason I bought it is very simple I though it was a great bedroom amp due to the lower voltage and it is very cheap for a marshall. The reason I sold it after those years is that it was a bit too modern for me and I was craving the classic marshall crunch more and more. Also the clean channel was very weak and breaks up real soon. This is to be expected with a 1watt amp but still it left a lot to be desired. These things are marketed towards the bedroom but what most don't understand is the difference between a cranked 1watt amp and 100watts is about 20-25db difference. Everytime the wattage is doubled the volume is increased by 3db. Practically even a 1watt amp can be too loud for at home. I now own a marshall 20watt jubillee and can dial in the amp to be as quiet as the one watter was, but it sound a lot thicker. It also has tons more headroom on the clean channel. For those who want to record it is very easy to use a loadbox with IR's and you can even crank your amp and play through studio monitors like I do with my 20watt Marshall studio vintage. If you like the DSL-range and want a cheap marshall you can pick this up and be happy with it. But if price is not an issue better to go with a higher wattage amp, when used right it is just as good in a bedroom setting as the DSL-1HR.
@sergioserramusic
@sergioserramusic 2 года назад
I agree. If you want more headroom in the DSL range there’s the DSL20 which is a very very good amp for the money (it is THE amp for many) but yeah, since I own a Mini Jubilee I know that has a lot more headroom but in general has a totally different sound signature. But I am keeping the DSL1, and that speaks for itself

After some decades of rather love-hate concerning Marshalls and some testing of some newer models, which also did not convince me really, but at least more than JCM's the DSL1-HR simply was love at the first tone! The by far best Marshall clean sound ever plus an excellent 100% Marshall high-gain sound, with it's own, but great character. This tiny box really has "balls"! Not only a Metal amp, but also, but also nice Crunch to Heavy Rock tones. Perfect for recording through a load box and with cabinet IR's.

I have the same head/cab combo. I was pleased with the sound, but wanted more. I pulled the stock speaker out and sprayed the inside with bed liner spray from oriellys. The mdf board is isn't the best wood for a cab. Then I popped in a vintage 30 and everything changed. Now it's amazing

I use the harley benton pa100, I only use it as a load. There are better ones but this one’s good enough for me. @sergioserramusic
@sergioserramusic 2 года назад
Depends, a 2x12 is surely louder than a 1x12 but I think you can totally get away with it. The Ultra Gain channel sounds very good even at Master 1, it’s the Classic Gain channel that sounds better when cranked :)

Is it possible to hook up the DSL-1cr (combo) to the cab (MX112R ?) as my Origin 5c. This way I could make use of both amps on the same 12" cabinet, an ABY switch might do the trick. Am I correct? It would be the most affordable way to get DSL and Origin (I like both) over a 12" speaker. Have checked DSL,Origin as MX112R (that is yours I believe in the video) are 16 ohm. TIA for any advice 🤠
@sergioserramusic

Yes! But I’m not sure it would be safe for the amp going into the same cab with just an aby switch, it could fatigue the transformers. You can search online to see if there are specific tools for the job, I know amp switchers exist but I’m not familiar with them

Nice to hear this amp’s review with a Strat and not heavy tones, this convinced me to buy its combo version, thanks! :) How much lower is the volume with the attenuator vs. 0.1W mode? I have a DSL1CR and 0.1W clean channel at 9:00 is almost 80dB measured cca. 1m from speaker. I would like to make it more silent and I wonder if such an attenuator like your HB would do the job…

@@sergioserramusic The HB attenuator just arrived and I am very satisfied with the result!! The DSL1CR @ 0.1W mode on the classic gain channel about 12-13 o’clock, strat neck pickup, attenuator at 10-11 o’ clock -> nice bluesy breakup at about 68-70db, just enough to not hear the heavy strummed strings. Ciao Sergio..ascolta dalla dsl1 tramite line out posso andate diretto nel mixer collegato a due casse monitor attive? Per evitare di comprare la cassa...
@sergioserramusic
@sergioserramusic 2 года назад

Hey man great review! Im a blues-rock player, and I play at home. I have 3 questions: 1)I know you said its loud, but I live at a big house with basically no neighbours and sometimes I like to play kinda loudly, so I was wondering if on the clean channel I can crank the volume enough to get some headroom but still not get it to break up, you know, if I can play completely clean a bit loud. And 2) On the ultra gain channel, if you put little to no gain, can you get some crunch-rock tones or is it too gainy (I play an hss strat). I just want to be sure cause from the video I can't be sure haha. And 3) Is the marshall 112 cabinet good or you think it is better to buy/build another one with a bit more money? Maybe put a greenback in there idk. Thanks!
@sergioserramusic
@sergioserramusic 2 года назад
Thanks! 1) I haven’t had the chance to use it loud yet, but it stays clean until 10 o’clock, then it starts to break up. With single you’ll be fine until half gain, with humbuckers you’ll start distorting probably at 10/11 o’clock. If you want more headroom you’ll probably be better off with the 20W version because it has separate gain and master for the clean, but you may be fine with the DSL1, as soon as I can I will try it! 2) you can get some slightly crunch tones with the gain at zero in the Ultra channel, but the character is different, a bit more modern than the Classic channel distorted. It sounds nice tho! 3) the can is fine, there are surely better cabs put there, but for the price I think is fine. I will eventually replace the speaker with a V30 because they say it’s a match made in heaven with Marshall amps, when I do I’ll surely make a video about it! :)

Thank you 😃 No you can totally use it without the attenuator, but yes due to the clean channel not having separate gain and master makes it harder to get a edge of breakup tone at a volume that won’t destroy your ears. @sergioserramusic
@sergioserramusic 2 года назад
Yes! You can plug this in a 4x12 as long as the impedance is right (16Ohm for this head)
@topsecret519
@topsecret519 2 года назад
@@sergioserramusic I don't understand "impedance" but I spose I could just ask a store. Cheers dude!
@sergioserramusic
@sergioserramusic 2 года назад
@@topsecret519 it’s just the value of the output jack and it should match the input of the cab: 16 with 16, 8 with 8 etc :)

What speaker do you use for the amplifier?

I used the MX112 but I would go for something with v30s in it

Can it do clean tone?

@sergioserramusic Месяц назад
Yes! But may struggle to stay clean at high volumes (it doesn’t have a lot pf headroom), if you want that you should check out the DSL20

Grazie
@sergioserramusic
@sergioserramusic Год назад
Ciao grazie!

It will need an attenuator. Trust me. I moved on. Even 1 watt is loud.

It’s the cab, probably. Paired with bigger cabs will probably make it even better!

Complete JUNK!! Jmp1 or Jcm1. The DSL series are cheaply made and very difficult to find useable sounds. Thin and nasty.

I like the Studio series, I have the jubilee 2x12 and it sounds killer, so I bet the 1x12 is too
