Is it just me or did the ultimate community come to slippi and bring the one and dones, constant taunting only to get bodied, and disconnects when in a huge deficit? Ssbm online was never really like that in my experience until super recently.
That isn't exclusive to ultimate. People used to stay away from netplay even within the melee community due to how laggy it was. Almost all the smashers I know despised netplay prior to Slippi. What this means is that the only people who used to netplay were people highly tolerant of lag and I also recall waiting times were higher, so that discouraged 1 and dones.
