Echo Beach will always be my favorite song. It helped me through horrible moments in my childhood and it's also a perfectly crafted song. Every instrument and vocal is performed absolutely brilliantly. In short: this song is magic.
I was in college in the mid-80s, and worked at the college radio station. I was introduced to M+M by a girl at school from New York who I to this day, considered to be the "hippest" person I'd ever met (and back then had a secret crush on). It opened me up to a whole new genre of music. We shared a lot of music and fun times together, but I was too shy back then to ever let her know how I felt. She went on to work for a big record company, and I became a computer geek. M+M always brings back memories of my college days, but some of them are still bittersweet...
Both Martha's have been stylish on occasion, if they were "done up"! But I don't think they thought it went with this band's casual image! Martha Ladly DID also play keyboards, for stylish band, THE ASSOCIATES. Check out 18 Carat Love Affair on video, on the 'net! Now THAT'S style!
The song that took me away from where I was the year it came out. There's something in this this song, something that actually took me away from the diet at the time in UK. Worked for me. It's perfect pop music. One of the best singles ever IMO.
You may be interested to know that Echo Beach was recorded in Oxford in the UK together with the rest of their first album. One of their other albums was also recorded in the UK.
I've always wondered about some kind of animosity between the two Martha's, and it seems that bit of tension shows through in this video. Like many other's commenting here, I too have had a crush on Ladly since I saw the Echo Beach video.

M&TM were a great band Ladly was hot totty, and Echo Beach being their best rembered. But if you listen to the background keyboard melody, notice how similar it is to the Stranglers 'No More Hero's, indicating the influence they had on the Muffins.
Echo Beach and the rest of the 1st album were recorded in Oxford, UK even though the band were Canadian. The producer (or at least one of the team) had an influence on the synthsizer sound. Both Marthas played keyboards for the album and Ladly later became involved with some UK projects.
Between how much the lead Martha couldn't lean any further away from the other Martha and just the overall "tone" for lack of a better word, that the lead Martha had when talking [and how she kept looking at her band mates], it seemed she couldn't stand them.
She and Mark didn't generally like being interviewed anyway so that probably didn't help. They weren't in their home country either so probably weren't accustomed to the more formal style of interviewing in the UK.
@@johnr6168 Ironic that people who aspire to be in a band that performsl TO and FOR people. . would be reluctant to TALK to them in interviews. These two are far from the only ones reluctant to talk off stage. A band called Jesus and Mary Chain had a guitarist who played with his back to the audience ! Bet that guy was a great interview.
Perhaps the song title had been heard by the songwriter somewhere about an obscure place, and he didn't realise it wasn't his original idea! Happens occasionally. I wanted to do a book called EVOLUTION REVOLUTION which took forever to write. Before I finished I found out there was a kid's book called that!
