Today’s my pappys funeral… and the only concert he was ever able to attend was me playing this and a few other things at the Nashville symphony… just feeling sad and nostalgic but happy he was here for this ❤
Years later, still a fabulous performance of this too often overlooked music! Just wow. Pianist, conductor, orchestra, choir all on point. Doesn't get any better.
Since my teen years (now 81), I have loved this music and never thought it was properly acknowledged. I love Seiji as he conducts with such emotion always. I am crying.
I was in this stage as a member of the chorus. In this time, I didn't know how special they are. I was the common man but lucky girl. Now, I’m so happy to see and listen this movie. I understand how special it is. I can live only this experience.I love music forever!
The journey from 17:03 to the ending is probably the most touching moment in human history. I don't know how many touching moments there are in the journey.
My heart is full!! Just seeing Seiji Ozawa (now much older as I, too, am - I saw him in his prime when he was the conductor of the San Francisco Symphony) walk out arm in arm with the great Martha Argerich now, too, much older, brought tears to my eyes! How wonderful to see these two together bringing Beethoven's wonderful Choral Fantasy to life!!! Bravo to both of you!!
I saw him in Boston for nearly 30 years. I assure you his prime did not come until he was nearly 80, physically frail, a survivor of injury and grave illness, but spiritually unencumbered for the first time in his career. His intensity here and in some other videos of the same period is now all inward, entirely between him and the players he is collaborating with. So unexpected and, in all sorts of ways, so moving!
Grazie
Martha Argerich and Sejii Ozawa have lost nothing of the virtuosity and vigour that always characterized their innumerable performances throughout the years. So glad this particular performance is available also on dvd!
Wow !!!....The Music Has Kept Their Spirits Young , Vibrant , And Relevant !!!....Like A Fine Wine , They Have Both Only Grown Finer , And More Priceless with Age !!!!!.....
I made my debut singing the Bass Solo in the vocal ensemble of this wonderful gem. Peter Tiboris conducted the Manhattan Philharmonic at Avery Fisher Hall. What a memory!
I have never heard this work before - and I am 65 years old!! what a great pity it took so long. It has today changed my life. Magnificent. Inspirational. At a time when South Africa is facing COVID-19. We shall overcome it. Thanks to Herr Ludwig van Beethoven, Seiji Ozawa, Martha Argerich and the Saito Kinen Orchestra and Chorus.
Utterly delightful performane of a sadly neglected masterpiece. The choir were excellent. Beethoven - the composer for the world North South East and West
The utter joy on Maestro Ozawa's face as the piece ended says all. So much praise has been written over the years about Beethoven's 9th Symphony, and deservedly so, but there is in the Choral Fantasy an innocence and joyous exuberance that speaks to me as no other work does. . . or can. Beautiful!
I agree with all the positive comments on pianist and conductor, but would also like to point out the excellent sound quality. Kudos to the sound engineer. I wish there was a special thumbs-up to give to the composer!
This is the piece that first awoke my passion for Art Music. After 50 years I am happy to say that I had not listened to a performance of this level and emotion.
Tears? Surely not. I'm too mature... but towards the end, the glorious skies opened. SO many people, unitedly making outrageous music with all their might, knowing this was the moment, my heart burst with tears. I thank God.
This is my favourite Beethoven, the beauty always brings tears of joy. It has fantastic piano, short solos of various instruments, duets between piano and instruments, and caps off with a mixture of vocal solos, trios, and complete choir, and a melody one finds that one is humming spontaneously the next day. Little wonder that Leonard Bernstein thought Beethoven was the greatest musical genius.

For him, Beethoven was the greatest composer of all time - his very first TV show was on Beethoven’s 5th symphony. Beethoven never lets you down, he said, because everything he wrote sounds inevitable. He was uncomfortable conducting Wagner: as a Jewish man, he found it difficult to separate his music from his anti-semitic writings and way it was used by the Nazis. He loved the wit and balance of Haydn, though, and was particularly celebrated for his interpretations of Mahler, a composer very close to his heart. If Lenny’s performances were a collaboration between his live audience and his live musicians, when he recorded he became Lenny the rabbi - the docent who wanted to illuminate the ancient texts. All conductors are storytellers and Lenny was one of the best. He’d come out onto the stage, bow, shake hands with the orchestra’s leader, and wait, wait for the audience to be paying attention. One of the things I miss most about him is his ability to tell a joke, because of his timing. Timing is everything in classical music.
Fantastic!!!!! the most beautiful thing I ever see in my life!!!!!!!! Thanks Beethoven Thanks Martha, Thanks my lovely MAESTRO Seiji Ozawa!!!!!! Ilove you all!!!!!
How is the incredible discordance achieved commencing at marker 3.57..? I regretfully have not seen the full score. Is it available over internet ? Would appreciate any advice. Michael Harvey, Luxembourg
There is something about this particular composition by Beethoven that leaves every performer in complete humility at the end of it all. Simply amazing.
I saw this recording so many times, and every time when I see these beautifull people enter the stage I get tears in my eyes. This is far most the best recording of Beethovens Choral Fantasy.
I love the fact that 1. she turns the pages herself, when she's able, leaving the page turner sitting there in awe. And, 2. That the conductor didn't start the beat---it was Algerich. In, effect, even setting her own tempo for the entire piece. THAT'S preparation.
@@apostolismoschopoulos1876 No conductor would start this piece because it's a solo cadenza for the piano. The tempo is, of course, agreed upon at rehearsal.
@@apostolismoschopoulos1876 Within reason, yes. With a few exceptions, mostly from the Romantic period onward, the soloist is the only person playing a cadenza. Beethoven has the timpanist play a duet with the pianist in the cadenza to his own transcription of the violin concerto, for example.
It's usually pre-arranged between the performer and the page turner beforehand if and when the turner will turn the page, including repeats and when to turn. If it's a long reach by the turner, making easier for the performer to do the job, that's how it will be done. You can't have the page turner jumping up only to find that the performer has pre-empted them. The tempo is also pre-arranged. In a performance with a star like Argerich, nothing is left to chance. Even if it's a not very good performance like this one.
Wow, just wow. I played my Dad's old LP with this piece on so much, I knew where all the jumps and scratches were. Haven't listened to this piece for ages. Divine, underrated piece of Beethoven's music, it just sums the composer up for me.
I agree about it being underrated. We hear SO much about the Choral Symphony, which in some ways is rather odd, but I much prefer the spirit of the Choral Fantasy all the way through.
@@davidjared3402 To my ears the 9th Symphony is a lesser work than the Choral Fantasy. Possibly because every time I hear the village band (Salvation Army?) marches through the final movement the jingoism appals.
I m argentine and very proud of Marta not only for being a great musicien but also she is a very nice person. and what about the director, he is a wonderful man and a "sabio" in the musical level
This is music of the Gods with Beethoven smiling down on the Great Martha Argerich from Heaven Bravo Martha, Bravo Osawa and Bravo to the Orchestra and Choir.
So clear that the Maestros ears still work perfectly. He inspired that orchestra and choir to play and sing as it was their final performance. Martha told him that he needed to stop socializing and get pon and poff stage with a quickness. Of course he did the opposite and that is one of the things I particularly love about Ozawa. He is as authentic as they come and Im so glad he is still here!
so so magnificent - I love all the components of this Choral Fantasy , what a pianist in Martha Argerich , and the orchestra - the fabulous choir , all put together so well by Mr Maestro. Beethoven must smile with this!
Woweeee!!! What a wonderrful performance! Electrifying, and perfectly executed to every loving detail, with top singers and Ozawa at his sensitive best, all infused with the magic of Agarich. I'm in my 70's now and I've been listening to this warhorse for more than 50 years live and recorded, but never so fresh and exciting as this. It has left a tear in my eye.
I have listened to this recording again and again and this is indeed a lovely performance. While I have long been aware of this composition, it is only until lately that I could comprehend its beauty. The most amazing expression in the choral is the part "und Kraft und Kraft vermählen". The choir and the orchestra really capture the spirit of this text and transmit this "Kraft" in a wonderful and exuberant harmony. Listening this part brings joy and excitement. Thanks for uploading this video.
Seiji Ozawa- Martha Argerich- Beethoven takes ones breath away to a higher other worldly state of being. All the cares and problems of this world are left behind!
WILLIAM? Maybe if Beethoven had done a bit of tweaking, the Choral Fantasy ( in C) MIGHT have out done His ODE TO JOY? You do know that DEAN WITTER used the MAJOR THEME as backdrop to a number of their TV commercials? Like to drove me nuts until I figured it out.
@@jtc1947 TURN OFF THE TV -JUST ENJOY BEETHOVEN - Symphonies, Piano Concertos, Violin Concerto, Piano Sonatas, String Quartets, and my favorite is the Triple Concerto for Violin, Cello, Piano are all masterpieces!
Genius Argerich's performance is beyond description , immeasurable , unfathomable and full of admiration , acclaim and deep emotion From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵
Martha is 77 years old, (older than me but not my much) and Seiji is 83. Hope I am still playing beautiful music (on my violin) when I am getting along in years. These two are phenomenal. Kids are always pushed/ encouraged to go into sports. How many 77 and 83 year olds are still playing sports this much at their age? If they can bend over, pick up the football they are doing pretty well.
Wow! another example of cosmic harmony! the balance, the body of voices, the tempo, the sound dynamics, the colors, the two masters... I think Martha Argerich is following the rhythm with her head (15:06) and the orchestra stomping (19:42)
Best performance of Choral ever so far. Martha really outdid herself here. 👍👍👍 Lots of players in the orchestra have matured nicely (I have heard and seen them (younger version) playing before.
Wonderful to see this back again, with extra footage! My Fave-Rave Orchestral Beethoven. Martha just ⚡️Electrifies this! Two Whitehaired Master Musicians Communing with Pure White Light! AHHHH MARTHA!!! Tears of Joy, Yet Again!
