While all the string players played like there's no tomorrow, Argerich just took a step back and chilled.

Argerich is the best thing on that stage! :-p She made it look so easy. Everyone else was ripping nerve endings out of their spinal chords to make any kind of sound. Brillant interpretation no less. Thanks

Hello, you're right -- there's been an oversight. I checked the medici website for their free Verbier Festival broadcasts. There, it lists Argerich, Bell, Kraggerud, Bashmet, Maisky. Really "rockin'" the hall here with Shostakovich!

What an incredible performance....the energy from each musician flowed into each partner and round and round it went. Epic performance of this piece....Martha Argerich's effortless but definitive presentation reflects just what a consummate professional she is....they ALL are.....BTW, I thought Einstein played violin only....all in fun Maestro Maisky...He was absolutely TIGHT on that cello which glued the strings together. Bring this group to Cleveland and I'll pay Gala Ticket prices to hear them!

is Argerich playing the final chords (stretching an octave) around 2:55 using the fourth finger, or is it an optical illusion?

@smudgepots " think once you are concerned with profundity and the truth.." Ahh, now i get your point. I meant to use the word to convey the seriousness of your comment though. My bad! "Thank you for the compliment, by the way" You've earned it! Deducing that i'm utterly obsessed with Martha's hair from a request i made for you to explain your comment is brilliant!

The frantic gesticulations of the musicians go perfectly with the music -- a soundtrack for Charlie Chaplin's "Modern Times" or Dante's "Inferno." The music captures the frenetic spirit of today's lifestyle: Don't ever stop, don't ever rest, just keep moving as fast as you can till you drop.

It's funny the things some people say about Joshua Bell. I don't know if some of them say it because they are envious or only because Bell, apart of being a great musician is a handsome man as well. (Is that a sin or something prohibited for a classical musician?) If you like or don't like him (the musician, of course) has nothing to do with the way he plays, you can't deny he's one of the best musicians in the world.

I'm amazed at how many people are cutting Joshua Bell down. Even if he doesn't have the 'best' (in your opinion) technique, he has revitalized an interest in the classical realm. Good looking and a talent...Sometimes it's needed to pull the younger generation in...or would you rather YOU are the only classical violinist to feed your egos. Learn to enjoy all interpretations and value that he can bring energy back to the classical realm.

which Shostakovich quintet is this piece from?
@clairannette
@clairannette 14 лет назад
@NemoProkofiev551 The qualms with intonation are *probably* from 1:03 - 1:06 (Bell) & 1:14 - 1:17 (Bashmet). They are both fishing for pitches. Begs the question as to whether this is human error (logical, they're humans) or whether Shosty wrote quarter tones for some extramusical purpose (maybe). The 8vas from 1:49 - 1:51 b/w vln & cel are also flat in the soprano (i.e. Bell again). The cellists lazy intonation from 2:22 - 2:35, however, seems to be programmatic & is brilliantly done w/ Martha.
