Martha says that Prokofiev is her best friend: "Il m'aime beaucoup". She has performed his third piano concerto numerous times yet somehow always manages to bring something new out of it. Unlike that work, this 10 piece set, Op. 75 that you are listening to has not been a staple of Martha's programs. Such a shame. This rendition was recorded from the audience in a memorable 1981 Carnegie Hall recital which also featured, among other works, the Brahms F-sharp minor Sonata.
Prokofiev completed his ballet Romeo and Juliet in 1936, but plans to produce it had to be cancelled, due to its association with a theatre director who had been purged. In 1937 the composer decided to fashion a number of suites from the score, including one for piano, entitled 10 Pieces from Romeo and Juliet, which he performed in public that year and published as his Op. 75.
