Because 1) the whole fight is for an idiotic behavior and solves by a coincidence. they could have just talked it though, no mother name thing, just “hey they made me do it. So all a Mis understanding solved by a vague coincidence ? 2) 90% of the whole fight scene has no point. Batman could have had him with the lance right after the first krypto gas shot but wait, prefer to beat the shit out of him, allowing to be countered when Superman recovers a bit, then had to do it all over again, then oh wait, let’s beat him again while he’s already down. And oh, there’s a lance here. I could use this. Even without the lance why just punching Superman while he could have gone for something more lethal. 3) does he find the lance by coincidence but has no other means to kill Superman? Then why would he get into the fight in the first place with all this strategy if it’s not a winning one? So that all seems like a ridiculous excuse to have them fight for 5 minutes

I have no experience in film or anything but if you watch the movie you can see when Wayne is in metropolis and looks up at superman he is taking all of the worlds hate for superman on his own shoulders. Batman is already set on killing superman before the whole "they made me" shit even happens so its not a coincidence you just didn't catch the beats of the movie. 2. There is multiple reasons you're wrong. The fight this is most based off of, batman is making a statement to superman that with the right prep he can beat him. Secondly batman uses all the shit he does before the kryptonite grenade and spear to lower Superman's guard, hence why we see him deal with them so easily. That's why when he catches the grenade his confidence literally blows up in his face. Third if he went straight at him with the spear superman would figure out whatever he has makes him weaker and then batman would lose his shot at him. Like i said batman took on all of humanitys hatred for superman in the beginning if the movie, so beating superman the way he did was to prove a point that man was superior. A little unnecessary? Sure but a lot more badass than whatever movie you would make. Lastly you're watching this film as a critic out for negatives, if you cant follow simple dc mythos (batman using his brain to win, superman being able to squish batman any moment he wants but doesnt because of his character, Batman's planning and prep abilities) why bother watching at all?

Murdoch Quintland Rochefeller Actually remember an earlier scene in the movie where Bruce thought he went to his parents grave and saw blood leaking from a bat monster. I think it was his conscience telling him that initially he became batman to destroy the crime in the city which killed his parents ( Thomas and Martha), but now he has become a monster. Bruce just took it as a bad dream. When Clark told him to "save Martha", Bruce was reminded of the same fatality which occured to him , however this time he was in the killers shoes and Clark was the Young Bruce wayne.

They shoehorned in Superman saying Martha because its Bruce's mothers name too. But it was stupid as fuck and felt forced because no one would ever call their mom by their first name

I agree. It's similar, in a way, to how directors like David Lynch are really an acquired taste. His films can be very surreal, open to many interpretations (like a dream), heavily visual, and sometimes very difficult to understand when you're looking for a conventional film that relies heavily on narration and exposition. Lynch doesn't seem to give a fuck about that on many occasions. I compare Snyder more to Ridley Scott, in that both men have made films that were sometimes much better received by audiences and critics once their Director's Cuts were released. That being said, I love BvS. I haven't seen the Ultimate Edition as of yet, but I'm looking forward to seeing how it fleshes out the story and further vindicates Snyder's vision in the eyes of critical viewers. And it doesn't hurt that the Internet is starting to be filled with good rumors concerning Justice League, especially after visits to the movie set. :-)

I'm sorry but a good visual storyteller wouldn't leave things this ambiguous or up to misleading interpretations. Quite frankly, the only people I see defending this movie to death or regarding it as some "underappreciated gem of its time" are those that are fans of the original comics. I like the movie but I can definitely see its many faults.

Forgive my oncoming (and, perhaps, needlessly) long explanation, Jimmy. I respectfully disagree. And I understand if this movie is not everyone's cup of tea, since it is a work of art and does not subjectively appeal to everyone's preferences. I have no problem with that. While I would not go so far as to say that it is a perfect film, some of the various criticisms I have heard against it don't hold up to scrutiny for me, especially regarding this scene. What is so difficult to understand about it? The juxtaposition between what is both being said and witnessed on screen makes it apparent for me. Not only does Batman see Superman as being essentially human through his association with a human mother, but both of their mothers share the same name (which resulted in a traumatic memory for Batman but also provided a chance for him to save "Martha" that night, which he couldn't do as a child so it's like a form of catharsis). Since it has been highlighted that Zack is a visual storyteller (which is the essence of film going back to the Silent Era), I should point out that this is a minimalist view of film primarily relying on visuals rather than verbal narrative exposition that has to be spoon-fed to people in order to get a certain point across. Why many viewers have such a hard time with this scene is puzzling for me, as I understand it very well. I do, however, see how many people could misinterpret the scene if they haven't actually watched the movie and just decide to bash it because of negative word-of-mouth from others who have seen it and didn't like it for one reason or another. I should also say that I'm not an avid comic book reader, and I don't consider myself an expert on the lore of DC, Marvel, or any other franchise (though I am aware of background stories from personal research and have read some in the past). I'm just a Millennial cinephile who enjoys the current take on DC stories (of which I'm aware), actually prefers them to Marvel (I've seen them as well), and has loved watching Zack Snyder's other films. The reason why the comments seem to explain the scene better to you is because we are offering collective hindsight in the forms of our own experiences and interpretations, which can sometimes validate more than one meaning to a particular scene. Dialogue tends to make certain things understandable over time. Finally, even though I appreciate the idea of movies being based on original source material, the films have to stand on their own artistic merits and subjective interpretations for individual viewers. I believe this film does that well, and I look forward to seeing how Warner Bros. handles the upcoming films in the DC Extended Universe. :-)

I, too, understood this when I saw it the first time.

I got it and It was still shit.

No he wanted to talk to Batman about it from the first place... Try watching it again.. He's asking Batman to help him look for his mother..

But it took for these memories to be triggered for Batman to listen.

Besides, I just hated how Batman was going to avenge the many deaths Superman had caused (His 1% quote was badass, however it went to waste when he easily let Superman alone) but then just because he realizes that Superman has a mom, that he is forgiven!? Excellent explanation of what should be fairly obvious to any viewer with half a brain. It's disappointing, to say the least, to see this moment of such great gravity and depth be made fun of as if it's stupid, as if it's just a stupid coincidence that was the turning point for these two titans. But, it was so much more than that, and it sucks that this movie had crap piled over it over what is essentially willful ignorance turned to trolling.

For me the scene is decent because it is like a moment of reflection: he remembers the pain of his parent's death, the origin of him becoming batman. however he realises that now he is the one who became a killer too, about to kill an innocent person. I think that's why they showed the gun twice. He hesitates and realises what he risks becoming. He is close to being the bad guy. However, then he goes on to kill the mercenaries so the weight of this moment is somewhat undermined.
