3:07 _"Aaah, he Mike Tysoned him. Just bit the ear right off. This is one of the reasons, when people ask me if I teach self-defence, I say 'No, I teach Muay Thai and Brazilian JiuJitsu', because the second you add in rules, it becomes a sport; it's no longer like a self-defence. The guys who train definitely have a better chance of looking after themselves, but you don't train to have your ear bitten off."_ That's the simplest and clearest explanation I've ever heard for the differences between training in a fighting style and self-defence.
Yes it is. I always tend to say that every martial art is brilliant for what it was created for. Take BJJ for example - it is brilliant for a 'duel' type of situation. On the street, however, it strikes me as a very bad idea to take the fight to the ground - chances are, your opponent has mates close by waiting for a chance to kick your head through the pavement. Again - every style is great for the problem it intends to provide an answer, but no style is unbeatable, and no person is unbeatable.
This was such a great show. The story is that the main character gets out of prison, stops at a bar where the new sheriff for the town of Banshee stops on his way to take over the position. The real sheriff (Hood) gets killed in a bar fight with a couple of thugs at said bar. The recently released convict takes over his identity and becomes the sheriff in his place. He continues to do criminal stuff while being a lawman in his own way. You never even find out what the guys name actually is. Its really good.
@@dominiquepowell3158 Its awesome. I think its just 4 seasons. And the main dude is the same guy that plays Homelander in The Boys, if you are into that show as well.
In this series, the reason why Hood beats this MMA "champ" is because it was outside the ring. Figuratively and actually. The "champ" clearly was more skilled in the techniques of fighting mixed martial arts but the second it went outside the ring, he was done. Hood was in prison and learned all the dirty tricks to win fights. That's why he won. He doesn't play by any rules. Good video!
you are delusional. Prof. MMA fighter always win against amateur. I think you don't understand difference. Its like amateur basketball player against NBA player. No way street fighter will win against prof MMA fighter. You can be brutal but this is not helping you get KO by MMA fighter.
@@markozbunjol625 You do not understand the series and the character of Hood then. He fights all the time in this and has been shown to fight dirty and that's why he wins.
@@markozbunjol625 you just dont understand, hood is way more resilient to any damage, his skills of "dirty" fighting are highly trained due to him serving in black ops
Thank you for pointing out the difference between sport and self defence. Too many MMA students think they can do that stuff on the street. After 15 years of door work, all my moves are foul/cheap shots and I NEVER go to the ground. Cheers!
Absolutely! I teach Muay Thai and BJJ both sports martial arts and make sure that all my students understand the difference between ring fighting with referees and rules and what could happen to you on the street
@@section9809 My grandfather had a saying: if you plan on a fair fight, you f$#ked up in planning. Like I start any altercation with a hard jab to the solar plexus. Hard to dodge.
@@ReaLibro Hard jab to the solar plexus, if they try to grab you, you twist and manipulate fingers (break if needed), palm strike (with fingers forward) to the face, strike to the throat, when they slow down knee to the testicles.
The thing about Hood in this series is that most fights he gets in, he seems in way over his head. Like in this fight, he usually has to take a lot, before he can turn things around by getting dirty. Always the underdog. Love this show. Seeing this fight in the episode was so satisfying, Sanchez getting what he deserved.
Shut yup, he'll laser you. xD Ps., jokes aside, one of my favorite fights is when he and Kai fight and Kai won't give up fighting, then Lucas punches him in the nuts and Kai is like "Ok, I had enough". I am dying every time I see that scene. So.on.point and realistic. Once you get punched in the nuts, it's over men.
Trust me Banshee was an amazing series for all 4 seasons! And to be honest, when I first watched this particular fight scene I found myself maniacally laughing at how Hood's character totally dismantled Sanchez; especially after the assault Sanchez did on the girl prior to the scene.
As someone who watches pretty much every fighting show ever made, I'll tell you right now there has never been a show with more realistic fighting than Banshee. I can't recommend this series enough, it's one of the best series ever made. One of the best fights is Hood vs Kai, they have a couple of confrontations, but they have a 1v1 match in a meat packing plant that's just crazy.
@@whysoserious2869 come on dude, its still a tv show, so of course its over the top, everyone has diamond chin, is an elite martial artist and survives injuries like in mortal kombat, but the choreography is pretty damn realistic, gritty and effective, not much pointless fancy moves. i love how the characters use all the dirty tricks to get the upper hand, thats awesome.
Dude... you need to watch the series. Even the intro changes with every episode giving you an artistic glimpse of the story and the episode. The action is great and not over the top, great acting and super interesting main characters (Proctor in particular). Even the main theme song... for me is a 20/10
This is episode 3 of season 1 and the reason I got hooked on the series. One of the greatest shows of all time IMHO. All the fight scenes are very well choreographed and very realistic. You should definitely watch episode 1 and give this series a try.
The fight scenes are well choreographed but very realistic? Definitely not. You’ve got women beating up multiple guys on her own, guys tanking hits from brass knuckles and there’s also a scene of a guy getting his Johnson cut off and he still kept fighting like nothing happened when he’d bleed out in reality. I’m not discrediting how amazing this show was though.
I think the scene is made even better by the fact that Hood gets his ass kicked until the fight exits the ring, then it becomes a fight to the death where Hood has the advantage. Really clever writing and use of the environment to tell a story without saying anything.
I was just thinking of suggesting this scene to you. It’s brutal. Also with this show check out the Rolls Royce fight between Clay Burton and Nola Longshadow.
Somebody pointed out that the scene is better shot than I expected. In the early stages of the fight, they're in Sanchez's ring and fighting "by the rules", and thus Sanchez has the upper hand. Once Hood is kicked out of the ring, the "rules" go away and he fights dirty, eventually winning. Really nice touch by the writer/director.
I love how much range Antony Starr has to play this guy that you root for at every turn in Lucas Hood and then the guy you just want to die as Homelander in The Boys
3:40 that swing its just what we call it in martial arts (phone call) you show your opponent your attack, and how you gonna attack , its just like calling and telling him “hello im coming to attack watch me”
One of my favourite fights from Banshee, and most people don't mention it, is Ana vs Olek. It's a brutal fight, but is interspersed with a lot of flashbacks.
One of the top 10 tv shows of all times. When the writing makes you pull for the bad guys it's great. At least five characters you fall for on here. Job is hilarious. Must watch.
There are plenty of other scenes in banshee that are well worth thee watch. Hood vs. Albino is the most brutal that comes to mind. Although I would be interested in seeing your reaction to Eliot Spencer vs. Tank from Leverage S02E02 the Tap Out Job... it is one of my favourite episodes from the series :)
The fact that the protagonist is an utterly brutal and certifiably crazy SOB is a recurring theme in this series. He's one of those guys who genuinely doesn't seem to care if he lives or dies, which makes him thoroughly frightening.
Hey, Max. This show is pretty nuts. Part of Hood's strategy is to tank everything his opponents throw at him and keep coming in order to break their resolve/spirit. It gets him into too-deep water a time or two, but protagonist armor is the highest class of all.
One of my favorite fight scenes ever, it shows a good depiction of someone that's a polished pro fighter against someone that's fighting to survive by any means necessary.
Fight clearly shows the difference between martial arts as it is today (Sports based) and factual self defence: brutal, anything goes style of fighting. Something fight Sports fanboys will never understand. Good to see you make that clarification. Always enjoy your reactions.
100% Correct. Fight Sports fanboys are totally clueless, many of them think that just learning a little bit of BJJ means they are invincible, and that the Gracies invented grappling.
@@Chris66able what is crazy is if you look into muay thai the modern version isnt as lethal and is sports based where as some sects follow the original style of muay thai which usually involved caving in the skull with the knees and using the elbows to crush temples.
I love BBJ. When the MMA fighter got the guy in a triangle: I'm yelling at the TV..."GET YOUR LEGS UNDER YOU AND POSTURE UP." I think that might be the first time I've ever seen someone get out of a triangle like that, on a show.
I remember way back when this episode first aired and all the MMA fanboys losing it because "there's no way this random guy is gonna come in and beat out a trained MMA fighter like this who has years of training and wins under his belt", and most other people pointing out, well no, he didn't have a good chance at beating him in a straight up brawl with grappling, which is entirely why he quickly changed gears and started fighting as "dirty" as possible and broke him down bit by bit all while still getting the shit kicked out of himself.
one of the reason i love Hood, because he always fight to survive, not to win, either you`re dead, or im dead if you play by your rules, you invite doom when fight agaisnt Hood
Hood also was trained military style so that adds whole other flair combined with his insane will to survive. Watch the albino fight and you’ll see how nuts the show makes this guy at survival
Thats what I always find funny about people who love MMA and see the fighters as Gods and while they are really good at fighting, they do so with a specific set of rules in place and like this guy said, if you take them away you open the door to all manner of things most MMA fighters aren't trained for.
@@DarkLordDiablos MMA fighters can fight with no rules to and they will do it better than anyone. Breaking rules isnt a skill so MMA fighter not following rules vs anyone still wins tho
I wonder if that MMA character did any prison time. Being in prison and fighting for survival in prison changes how you fight. That fight scene with Albino guy in prison.
This was an incredibly brutal scene and really set the tone for the series. You don't really understand why he fights this way until quite a bit deeper in. It might even have been Season 2.
I think it was even later than that. Like, maybe even season 4 because they are looking for Job. And we get those flashbacks bc Hood tracks down his former CIA handler to find Job. Was pretty awesome seeing Sheriff Hood and future Sheriff Hopper reveal their back stories. Lol
@@rudyNok The audience doesn't find out his true background until season 3 or 4. His time in prison doesn't actually explain his fighting ability, it just demonstrates that he is a savage. But the flashbacks of his time in the military is what I would consider to be a logical explanation for his fighting skills. And we don't get that til later in the show. But the show isn't fresh in my head right now, so I might be forgetting something.
Excellent point concerning sport v.s. street. It's why when anyone asks me about learning "self defense" I tell them that's a great term that martial arts schools use so they don't sound like psychopaths, but in reality, in the real world, if you don't practice "self offense" you may wind up being a statistic. It comes down to mentality - whenever I have trained anyone, one of my first tenets is you can go green when you are in your home. The second before you open the door to go outside, you switch to yellow alert level. You stay there as you move through the outside world. You never stare at your shoes as you walk, and HELL NO not your damn cell phone. Be alert and aware in every circumstance, and most cowards who may consider you a target, will quickly move on to the next because they perceive awareness and strength. This is especially true for women. When I've trained women, I've taught them the swiftest and most brutal ways to destroy an attacker. This cinematic clip is great entertainment (it really is a great program - I enjoyed it), but it is completely unrealistic that nobody else jumped in on either side. In the real world, remember, if there is 1, there is 2. If there is 2, there is 3 and so on. You may not see them at first, but always expect cowards to move in packs and employ predatory tactics to flank and corner (and attack you from behind). They are bold in numbers, and nearly always draw strength from one figure they consider the alpha. These days, I prefer teaching people how to shoot. 🙂
I always thought the fights were very creative because in this scene you can clearly tell that once he fights dirty (since dude was a professional fighter) he out matches him
I'm an old-school Karate guy, makiwara and body conditioning and all, and people don't really appreciate how much punishment a tough man can take and still be dangerous...We used to do full contact with no pads 'cept a cup back in the 70s and the only rules were, well, pretty much what the sheriff did in that video weren't allowed. Maan, you'd hurt for a week even WINNING a match like that!
Absolutely love this show. Started watching it because of Antony Starr. Just finished season 3. I’m sad that I’m on the last season but I’m definitely going to re watch it in the near future.
Hood aka you never actually find out his name, is the Maaan👌🏽 And yes, banshee is a hidden gem if you've not seen, one of the best shows to binge watch👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Banshee is one of the few shows that get down and dirty and show how "realistic" a fight turns it does not hold back and showing how brutal it gets, and the show had me hooked from the first bar scene with Hood.
Kinda. But some parts were unrealistic. For example the biting escape from the armbar. If you bite someone's leg in that position your arm will be broken.
Ah banshee, my all time favorite TV series, I've watched it through 3 times. I was always incredibly impressed with the brutal realism of the fight choreography.
Oh god he did the banshee video lmao, ever since I saw the guy commenting about it the other day I've been binge watching the show currently at season 3 episode 5, pretty damn good show, would still like get max to watch Warrior more tho but I've already seen it
There is a massive difference between martial arts and self-defense. Out in the street, there are no rules, no mat, no referees. More often, weapons and multiple attackers are involved. Anything goes.
Hood learned all of these tricks in prison where he was for 15 years. You see in this segment some flashbacks because he remembers how he learned to fight the hard way. There was a brutal fight with a guy in prison where he learned that trick with the elbow. Hood learned the hard way to survive, all of the dirty tricks. This is very good show.
This show is fantastic. It’s funny that you call him the hero. If you haven’t already, watch the show: it’s one of my favorites. This was my favorite episode
The creep had it coming, having beaten a young girl terribly. The guy was a big up and coming MMA type star. Of course I know it's just a TV fight, but what a freaking TV fight it was...!! So my question: if it were real how long do you think it would take Sanchez to recover in a hospital?? He literally got maimed terribly, compound fractures, shit broken that's not supposed to get broken like that.... wow. I would think a beating like that ended his career....am I crazy??
Banshee certainly did things with fight scenes that I'd never seen before, and considering how many fight scenes have been made, and how many I've seen, that's a remarkable thing. They way they did this was perfect. A trained fighter against a street fighter, and we clearly see the pro dominating, until it turns into a street-fight and all the rules go out the window. Then it's bottle over the head, bitten ear, bitten leg, nut shot, blocking with the elbow (which he had done to him in prison), throat strike, split finger webbing, headbutt, torn/dislocated elbow/shoulder and a serious beating. All the way through the series, Hood comes across as a very capable fighter, but what elevates him is he fights dirty too.
Banshee was a phenomenal Tv series. Every supermarket near the locations must have been out of celery sticks for months, cuz the sound effects dept would have bought them all!
I use to go the gym with this guy who use to fight Muay Thai in the ring. He had professional fights, won a few of them. Decent fighter. He came into the gym with a scar on his nose. He had gone to the pub, some thug started a fight with his friend. Rather than mash him up, he clinched him to wait for the bouncers. The guy bite on his nose. Sometimes being a fighter in fighter mode in a streetfight can work against you.
Thanks for this, Banshee is amazing and has enough fight content to keep you going for many weeks! As many have suggested a "Hood" vs "Proctor" breakdown would be awesome.
I have watched the series three times, but I have never felt the pain in this fight so...lively like when you commented it. I mean, it was like you felt it too. Yes, it was a movie after all, but I found the characters pretty well built. Thank you!
I have become sick & tired of watching violence. But, Banshee you cannot take seriously. The amount of punishment, as stated, is insane and no one could handle that. But, their style and technique is over the top and that makes me chuckle.
there are more 2 fights in this show that are great and deserves atention, only two,the one in the prison with albino, and the indian lady against that butler weirdo,i suggest you to watch them, they are really impressive
I think this fight is brutally realistic except for bite escape....What's gonna happen is *gets caught in arm bar ( deep too ), opponent bites to cause pain distraction, guy performing arm bar screams in great pain and snaps arm either on purpose or out of bucking backwards trying to maintain the hold; snaps the arm. Since Damien has more training he now is able to beat the absolute shit out of Hood, who is fighting the pain of a broken arm ( at the joint no less ) and trying to defend himself
My Mother was a US Marine. She told me that if I ever got into a fight that I should always focus on injuring limbs. If you take out the limbs, men falter faster. She explained the idea of body shots and head shots are not as consistent in ending a fight because you don’t know what your opponent can tolerate. Taking away a limb or two? No one can tolerate it.
Never seen the series. But from experience in seeing actual street fights. This was scary accurate with the amount of "dirty" tricks there are. When a real fight breaks out, survival is the only thing that matters and survival doesn't have rules.
No matter who wins or looses, neither one of them is going to be in good shape in the morning. Thats how I feel about fighting. Im not worried about winning or loosing, but you going to know you been somewhere, regardless of the outcome.
Loved this show! Glad it’s finally getting attention. Watched it long before the boys ever came out. And it’s based in my hometown area (Lancaster Pennsylvania)
