The red is actually used as a diversion. A Chinese weapon will have that flashy piece of red somewhere so that your eyes naturally track it while the end you're not tracking sneaks up on you.
Now that you mentioned it. Realistic, the best whip to use as a weapon out of that collection would be the steel wire (cable) whip. Small, lightweight, which would be good for speed, steel wire would be very durable and with the texture, probably would cause a lot of damage to the skin.
@@Thephantomofthreerivers I don't know, in the hands of an experienced user a longer whip could be much more useful. You'd have much more mass moving towards the target, and you can hit it from a greater range.
@@JohnDoe-ek9ng I honestly don't care about whips. And a longer whip can't really be concealed, I live in OK, I'd just Use a 15 inch Arkansas toothpick for self defense. The cable whip but maybe three times as long just bundled in a loop would work but it's not sturdy enough to stop a determined attackers forward pressure due to the weapons lack of structure.
I hope that if the castlevania series gets more old school games one day, that this man is an unlockable character in this outfit. Nothing like trudging through the filth of dracula's castle with a kick ass cowboy hat, cracking the skulls of zombies while the sound of the whip strikes fear in all those he will come across.
fun fact, saw an italian guy make a chain whip, if you replace the leather tip with wire rope 6mm 4mm and 2mm, and bend them together with crimping clamps, and crimp the end, with no cracker, it makes a super deep sound like a gunshot :3
This video is a dream come through. For a long time I've been fascianated by the chinese bullwhips. I own one, that I bought for 13 euros off ebay. Its 4 feet long, made from faux leather and the fall is rubbery. I bought it 2 years ago and it still hasnt broke, what a miracle. From this video, my favorites were the braided rope, chain and steel cable whips. The latter two look absolutely vicious, I want them right away. Surely I cant imagine these used for combat, but as collectible pieces they look awesome
In Trinidad and Tobago, they have a whip fighting martial art called," Jab Jab" or ," Jab Rope." There are 4 types of whips and one of them in a steel cable.
@@Adam-Winrich all I have is my friend Rondel. There is an interview with him through the Historical African Martial Arts Association on their channel. He talks about the art there.
Wow! what an awesome video! such a cool bunch of whips! i couldn't belive the prices! i thought that chain one was like $1000 haha lol! also i love the trilogy of whips from around the world, the American swivel handle bullwhips, the European rope whips, and the Chinese martial art whips! Its almost like that was your plan all along!
This whole collection of whips cost around $600. I can’t say that I meant to make a trilogy, I just wanted to cover groups of whips that interested me.
For a "combat" whip the classic is a blackjack whip. Short, 3-ft or so snake whip, with a very heavily shot-loaded handle. Blackjacks are often illegal, but whips pretty much never are. So it's a whip, but you can turn it around and use the handle as a bludgeon. The big issue with whips for combat tends to be the slow nature of the roll out combined with a small zone of effective range. The direction of the strike is heavily telegraphed to the opponent, and the effective range is a very narrow window. A few feet closer or farther makes the whip useless. Both problems go away when you use the handle as a club.
delonge's angles of attack are inspired from spanish fencing called destreza 'the true skill'. the system uses geometry to teach angles of attack and foot work. once you understand one weapon you then understand how to teach yourself any weapon using the same angles and footwork adjusting for length of the weapon.
To order in china go on Aliexpres for single items, and if u want in huge quantity for very cheap its alibaba, it cames all from there, the source, aliexpress for single items , mostly no shipping cost, or just 1$
Great video, Adam. Thanks for sharing so much of your collection! The chain whip looks like it could be a lot of fun to crack. Do you have any recs for whipmakers that make twisted rope whips?
Finalllllllyyyyyy pulled the trigger on some whips yesterday for me and my son's. Indiana is of course what sparked the interest, but you've inspired us to think it's actually a worthwhile hobby and not just movie silliness. Got myself a ten foot kangaroo bullwhip and a 6ft and 4ft for my boys. Pretty excited, thanks for the inspiration! I want to commission a whip done by you in the future!!!
I'm so jealous. You have such an awesome collection. Would you mind telling me where you got the chainmail bullwhip from that you use in your shows? I've wanted one since the first time I saw one of your performances. Cheers mate
Don't be jealous. More an exploration collections always start with what you can find and afford. One help is simply expressing a desire and many will take the time out to guide you.
Un látigo hecho con cadenas de acero es muy pesado y potente, puede pegar realmente fuerte y ensordecer a cualquiera que se encuentre cerca. Es fantástico su poder ^_^
Hi Adam, always enjoy your content whether in person or by video. Would it be possible for you to do a video on the Cossack whip? Thanks for everything you do!
Do you mean a nagaika? I have one, but it is mainly for use as a quirt while riding horses. It doesn’t crack, but I guess there are legends about it being used in combat.
These days I feel the word, "Martial Arts Weapons," actually means BS! I purchased a couple of your suggested performance whips for martial arts and shredded $450.00 in two weeks. One in trying to use it for a variety of fighting arts, and with the other, trying to get the handle for close in martial arts with putting in a rod into the PVC, as well providing the driving mass for both medium range and long range effect. Did keep a squirrel from invading my house. There is a definite performance aspect to martial arts and that is form and a dance like function. But real life martial arts is very utilitarian and strictly used in staying alive despite very nasty people. It is not about the crack and those with less fall and bigger knots are where it is at, as that is what you want to put on target. Not necessarily the crack. There is another whip performer that was the adviser to Indiana Jones, and a RU-vid that demonstrates the whip not for dramatic effect, but actual use and he shows it being used for a variety of techniques from close in, to medium range to long range. Also deterrence and entrapment.
I’m sorry you had a bad experience with performance hybrid whips. Some makers do a better job than others. But if you shredded them, you might do better with a whip made from kevlar or Spectra, which are more durable than nylon. I’ve met Anthony De Longis several times, and I’ve memorized his demonstration about a whip as a weapon. I find it very interesting. The main point I wanted to make, that I didn’t make in the video, is that while the chain whip seems like the best weapon in this group of whips, in China it is mainly used for strength training and displays of strength. But I am sure a good martial artist could use any one of these whips as an effective weapon.
@@Adam-Winrich yea I don't use chain whip, instead, I use bullwhip. I don't know why, but I feel like my whip is going through me like veins in my body. I felt like my whip is always my perfect side weapon.
@@Adam-Winrich I disagree. But you are thinking that people are cattle and respond to a crack. Whips used in fighting can be shortened to be used as a club at short range or entrapping tool at medium range, which is where the chain is better at, not steel cable. My funniest story involves the Cossack Whip, which is a meter in length and doesn't crack. This guy on the streets of Baltimore accused me of talking to the police and said if I am the one, I am dead. I threw my cigarette down, stamped it out with my foot and went inside. I came back out to his astonishment and he first viewed the Cossack whip in my belt as an exposure to him, then he mistook the red and black braid for a snake. Then he realized what it was and figured I hate black people, ready, willing and able. I got tested on this and told others, not at all, I just hate criminal A holes. Then pointed out it is great for a massage, and could crack that thing over my back. "It has a real Russian bullet in the tip." A perfect deterrent, which was performance; yet let them know I don't play. They use that whip to train kids to use their sword. With martial arts, the performance aspect is like a lock that keeps honest people out, but you also have to give the hint, it is a weapon and you have no problems using it.
@@MikeK2100 I agree with you bro! Only my family members used to judge me because I use my whip as a weapon in my fighting style. But right now, they are more supportive than before because they realised that they cannot stop me from using my whip no matter what. 😄😁😃🥰👍
If you’re really serious about self defense don’t rely solely on a pain compliance weapon, which almost every kind of whip is. It might be great for a non lethal threat but you’re not Indiana Jones, you’re not gonna whip a gun out of someone’s hand and use it on them.
