Cracked headstock is always sad, especially on guitars like this. This is really good Martin D-28 that fell of the stand. But if you act quickly and use proper technique it can be done nearly as good as new :)
Thanks for paintjob to our friend - ‪@grankinworkshop‬

So much for the effectiveness of a volute in preventing a headstock break. It just directs the force to an unsupported area. Great work!

Very nice repair girl. I had the same damage to my Breedlove 3 yrs ago. I did a glue research for this type repair, and decided on TightBond glue. I used 3 clamps and left it a week to dry. Another week unloaded, to let settle, then I added the hardware. She's awesome again.

Wow! I'm watching your video it's impressive you did a good job. I have a fender acoustic that I bought in 1996 it's 2024 now and the headstocks cracked I just put it away. And I always wanted to learn if I could do it myself but I'm always afraid I'm going to screw it up. Watching your video I felt like I was biting my nails on my fingers. But you did an excellent job that looks really beautiful.

Falls are always dynamic, and egregious. God bless any player who has to suffer from such. Back in the early-to-mid '70s, players were coming into my brother's music store with old Gibsons and Martins and Guilds, in need of new tuners ... Back in the past, makers seemed to use lower quality tuners to save money. I hand-reamed MANY a hole to instal new Grover or Schaller tuners. Using a reamer and a rattail file, I marveled at the mahogany dust that came out of those old headstocks, as it was dry as the desert. This was in Tallahassee, Florida where you would think there was plenty of moisture. However, home heaters and A/C units dried out all kinds of woods. My belief is that super dry wood is weak wood. I use a simple humidifier in the cases of my guitars with mahogany necks. Those things are bone dry in about three weeks, dependent upon time of the year (there are actually a few weeks where we do not need the heater or A/C). Here's my method for installing strings: All you have to do, is run the entire string through the post. Back it up maybe a post-and-a-half's worth. Bend the excess toward the middle of the headstock. Wind the string down like a coil (the lower on the post the string, the tighter against the nut it will be). Then bend the excess string back and forth until it breaks off cleanly. No need for clippers. No stickers to nail your fingers. However, you have to twice overwrap the string-through on the 1st and 2nd strings, otherwise, when you break off the strings, they will slip on the posts. Trust me. You will love having no stickers to draw blood. By bending the excess string toward the middle of the headstock, you form an "S" through the post, adding to a tight fit. Oh yeh, some nut lube on that nut will work wonders for tuning. That’s 61 years of string changing experience for you … But what’s right for you, is right for you!

This is an all too common job in a repair shop! I see a lot of these in my shop. The internet says this only happens to Gibsons and the volute is there to stop this from happening. 🤔 I had a Les Paul Menace in the shop with a similar break but it was caused by a rogue robot vacuum cleaner dragging it around the living room! Put your guitars in the closet before turning your robots loose in the house! LOL! Tanya, I have a jig I built that holds the guitar neck down at a 45 deg. angle. It really helps get the glue down deep in the crack. Especially the tight ones that you really don't want to open up! Great repair there!

Great job! I haven't seen many breaks at the volute. It is ironic since the volute is designed to fortify the pitchback of the of the headstock. I always see breaks above or below the scarf joint. I wish there was a way to get you some GluBoost. It will save having to refinish the entire neck to conceal the repair marks. Nevertheless, it turned out awesome. Well done.

This happened to my Gibson. I used Dispensing Needle 14 Gauge x 5" with 3 Pcs 30ml Blunt Tip Syringe Needle I bought from Amazon to inject the glue all the way in. I waxed the out side area with bees wax to keep the glue from sticking to the out side. Worked well.

No slam against guys as luthiers or repairmen. But Tanya is killin' it. I built all types aircraft in 70's and 80"s. Zero Defect standards were the only standards. And gents?... the ladies walked away with the quality, the polish. all girl crews sealed the ships because they miss nothing. Just like Tanya. Think of the mastery on top of this excellence in the decades to come. A little ASMR never hurts.
