Okay but Martin's feelings for Jon make so much more sense now. Loyalty to someone who treats him badly is what he grew up with, what he's always come to expect. His pattern is lie to provide, deflect and avoid to keep the peace unless it's better to take a verbal lashing. Jon gave Martin what he believed he was worth, but then he gave more. Concern over his wellbeing, gave Martin what was his (file storage cot) to make him feel safe and protected. Worked through the distrust and anger to appreciate him for who he is, not how good at his job he is (lunches and tea). A marker of Jon's growth is his treatment of Martin and it's exactly the sort of worth-assurance Martin needs.

I feel like this was a major clue to Elias's whole plan, how he just changes the subject when Martin asks why he didn't help sooner when he knew everything that was happening with Jane and Sasha well ahead of time. Hearing it again after finishing, it just clicks into place as such a major hint.

even though the animation itself is rough it's so incredibly detailed. I LOVE the small attentions to this; animating the flashbacks to Martin's history as Elias narrates it, the glow of the eye on Elias' head as he activates his ability to read him, the intense emotions on their faces with just a few thickly drawn lines. and actual written notes from the statement as it closes in to Martin lighting it!! amazing

If I had a nickel for every emotionally devastating scene in this show that involved setting pieces of paper on fire that I've seen ironically described as "ASMR" I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice

I'm not too much past this (about an episode into the next season,) but I predict that Martin's dad is an avatar of The Desolation. Like sure it could just be bad luck but members of the Magnus Archives and those around them rarely get off that lucky, and I doubt that even Martin would be *THAT* shook up by "biological son looks just like his dad." There's something else there that makes it stick that much harder in her mind, something that's twisting her perception to really make it hurt

I noticed you apologizing for “ugly Elias” in your description. I am here to tell you that THIS IS THE BEST ELIAS RENDITION I HAVE SEEN! when I decided to draw my own fan-art I used that version (albeit a different art style) for mine. I love the hair, I love the little beard, and I love the rest of it so much!

Holy shit. Hooooly shit a ten minute animatic of *this* scene??!? And its AMAZING!! The use of color, the way Elias looms over Martin, how you can see him putting on a brave face that slowly falls apart in the onslaught of Elias' pure contempt. Goddamn. Especially great use of yellow, like Elias clearly trying to compel an answer from Martin at the start but it not *quiiite* taking. Never was Elias' forte! It really added a lot, and set up the yellow for the big scene at the end. God Martin just. Collapses. Him putting himself back together afterwards, as the yellow leaves his eyes, is *great* shit. I love how you convey Martin’s emotions during this scene! He starts mosts of his sentences nervous then gets braver at the end of them, resetting with with each sentence but slowly picking up steam until he gets the courage to confront Elias about Not Sasha and Prentice. This was a fantastic scene to animate, not only for the angst but because it’s when Elias realized that Martin’s much smarter than he lets on.
