Martin Lewis of MoneySavingExpert.com is now heading up an Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information (see www.studentfinance2012.com). Here he outlines the changes to student finance in England from 2012, dispelling some of the myths and revealing some of the unknown truths about the new system. Please forward to others and embed the video on your own site. Filmed in front of parents and potential students at UCL, June 2011.

2 things, the first one is that the queen is technically head of state in the us (old law that was never changed) and secondly me and my dad worked out how much I would repay from a 4 year engineering degree and if I got a decent job from it I would pay over £60k back over the 18 years until it was repaid.

I don't know why there are so many rumors and misconceptions, it's not even hard to understand.

This is what we need, so many stupid rumours going about. I bet universities would have had a lot more applications if everyone watched this before believing the hype of coming out of uni and being in debt for the rest of your life.

This guy could have saved so many of the pointless student 'protests' we experienced. What a hero

Thank you Martin very informative. My child has a problem looking for a saturday job - 5 year course ahead of them..... You mentioned adding up your finance loan and grant, along with any monies from your parents and work as your income. Am i missing the point of a grant? Why is this also included in relation to paying off your debt?

Can a person get loan to pay for his/her studies if they have already a degree but outside of UK? Like I have a degree in philology, particularly translation studies, but I've gained it in university of applied sciences outside of UK, but in EU country. Or I won't be allowed to take a loan to pay for my studies in UK?

4:45 onwards Martin says, "INCOME THRESHOLD WILL RISE IN LINE WITH AVERAGE EARNINGS". This is not true. They were frozen 1 year later. This a dodgy, dodgy, loan agreement.

18 + 30 = 48 But do what you want, pay it all up front if I was you, considering it's SO easy to earn 30k a year, why don't we all just apply for a university by the beach and buy our own beach house? If student finance didn't make things easier, and more manageable then it wouldn't exist because no-one can use it. Yes I may be paying more but I definitely won't be going university without it, graduates earn an average of 12k a year more than non graduates so it's worth the "5-10k" a year.

Does that apply to EU students?

Hmm, interesting and informative video. But what a shame noone asked him what his reasons were for not liking the new system (apart from the principle about interest). Otherwise it did come across as though he was plugging it, despite his claims that he wasn't a fan. My objection to it, apart from anything else, is that there is no doubt it acts as a deterrent (real or imagined) to kids from lower-income families from going to university, and thus helps in some way to maintain the class divide.

The 30 years start the April after you leave your course, not when you take it out - 22+30 = 52. And neither 22+30 or 18+30 = 40. And you've now used all the time I can be bothered to spend with you.
