This song was done in 94 which was before autotune. It is the song Martina is most known for although she has had many hits and won many awards. This song at one time was ranked top 50 of top 100 country songs of all time
We uh.... we caught a little flack over this song from a surprising source. Stay tuned. We captured it on video. And the theme of the flack was the popularity of the song.
Country music singers used to be proud they could sing the notes.......they didn't use auto tune. Back then. Martina can and did sing this LIVE! Martina is a strong singer. Just awesome.
Me too! Truly the best era in country, in my opinion! Though I absolutely gotta acknowledge the pioneers too- loretta, patsy, tammy, George Jones, hank Williams etc! But 90s country is where it's at!
Those vocals are all Martina! She’s blessed with a set of pipes on her! This is before autotune dudes! Oh, and mama burn the house down with her and the man in it!
No she didn’t. This song was based on the book and TV movie, The Burning Bed. She waited until he passed out then soaked him in gasoline and tossed a match on him. She walked out of the house and turned herself in.
The Mama did burn the house down with the puss and sadly herself with it. Martina is amazing. You're right she wasn't straining and there is no auto tune!!
As I understand it, Martina was too close to the house while she was singing and she ended up getting burned. She knew that she only had a limited number of takes so she used the pain in her singing. The mother burned the house down with she and the dad inside it. Martina uses her voice and platform to bring attention to some important issues. Her other heavy hitters are "Concrete Angel" and "A Broken Wing." The parade scene with the little girl reacting to the clowns reminds me of a foster child I cared for. We were watching a TV show, NCIS I think, and two of the characters got into a fistfight. I looked over at the toddler and immediately turned off the show. The poor babe was cowering in a corner sobbing silently. I've never before, or after, seen a child able to cry in absolute silence. On a lighter note, if you enjoy country, are you familiar with Home Free? If not, may I suggest checking out their version of "Man of Constant Sorrow," "Some Girls Do," or "Ring of Fire?"
Interesting story on the video produciton. Sad about the origin of the song, though, it's awful origins are pretty obvious from the video and the lyrics.
there is also a religious aspect to song which is often overlooked because of the metaphor of USA independence day and the woman. "Roll the Stone Away, it's Independence Day" is analogy for the Bible as the woman who found Jesus found the stone "rolled away" and their was no body in the tomb. Jesus conquered death and slavery to sin for all of us to be independent. "Let freedom ring, let the white dove sing (comes from Noah's Ark in the Bible, again man's slavery to sin), let the whole world know that today is a day of reckoning (judgement day before Christ), let the weak be strong (analogy to the sermon on the mount / the beatitudes by Christ Jesus), the let the right be wrong, roll the stone away, let the guilty pay (once again the 2nd coming and judgement of Christ where those who "are of the world" will be separated from those "of Heaven")
My first foster cousin introduced me to George Strait. Her sister introduced me to Selena. I was eight when I first met them. This March will be 30 years of knowing them. I still stay in contact with my first foster parents. When I was in one of the shelters during Christmas we received a huge donation of Christmas presents. They were from Martina McBride I was surprised that there were presents for me a teenager. The second one we received from Keanu Reeves.
Would y’all react to “I Hope You Dance”? It’s incredibly moving. Martina is a country legend. She’s won lots of awards and has lots of hits. And she deserves all of them, she uses her platform and voice in wonderful charities. Also actually gets in there with her charity work. She doesn’t just talk the talk, she walks the walk!
Thank you for saying that. A real man never hits women or children and real men call out those that do. As for Martina McBride, I love the fact she uses her music to bring attention to some serious issues. A non Martina song that caused some controversy when it was released is "She Thinks His Name Was John" by Reba. You should really react to it.
As Vince Gill told the entire audience at the CMA Awards, "When it comes to singing, the good Lord smacked Martina McBride right in the throat"! She is an AMAZING singer with a voice from heaven. She is what you call little but loud!!! She uses her songs to educate people on uncomfortable situations by advocating on charities and organizations close to her heart. She has sang about domestic abuse, child abuse, breast cancer, child disabilies, and many more. Family is very important to her and she put her family first, then her singing career.
My favorite songs from Martina McBride are That’s Me, Independence Day, That Wasn’t Me, Wrong Again, and Still Holding On (duet with Clint Black). She has amazing range and power. You can feel her emotions every time she sings with that golden voice.
Just to let you know that while the house is burning, Martina was standing to close to the house and got scorched, but she knew that there was only one shot possible to create this video, so she just kept on singing until the shot/video was done. She then told the crew and of course got medical attention. Just to show you her strength. Martina has an incredible voice and does videos/songs of the things she cares about.
The chorus gets played in a lot of out-of-context “patriotic” displays. It’s probably where you’ve heard it. It also gets played on July 4th a lot because of the chorus even though it’s not really a celebratory song. Maybe someone who needs to hear it will hear it on those days, though.
Martina is from the tiny town of Sharon, KS. Which is about 10 miles east of Medicine Lodge, KS. People from there have heard her sing before she moved to Nashville with the her family group The Shiffters! Her last name was Aschoff.
Other songs dealing with some kind of domestic violence that will tug at your heart strings includes john micheal montgomery - the little girl, jason micheal carroll - alyssa lies, suzanne vega - luca, and rush - everyday glory. Rush doesn't have a video for their song so just pull up the lyrics.
On the night of September 15 2001, while I was liberty from the Marine Corps I fell off a 40' cliff suffering a class 3 tramdic brain injury. I remember hearing the angles and her voice reminds me of how they sounded.
As a teenager, Martina sang to Pat Benetar constantly until her vocal range match Pat’s. There is a CMT Crossroads with Pat and Martina! It’s great. F/U got to hear her perform live…no autotune.
You mentioned you thought you heard the chorus before and you thought it was a commercial but if you listen to the Sean Hannity Show he had this as his intro song for a long time. As a kid waiting to pick my sister up from school my mom would listen to him on the radio and that was always the song I heard.
This song caused a lot of controversy do to abuse and how the mom handle the situation as well Martina bring out what was normally not shown or talked about. This songin my option showed a woman at her limit to which she did the only thing she could do. She got her daughter out of the house to make sure she was safe before she took her life and the life of the man that was abusing her. Mom did the only thing she could do when nobody was helping her even when others knew about the abuse. This song became the theme song for Abuse women all over.
Ik this is like a year late, but autotune was originally pioneered by Cher and it was meant to bring a new “texture” to the table, it was not intended to cover or hide voices
Martina McBride is awesome. Love her music. If you guys have daughters then you must listen to “In my daughter’s eyes” or dealing with the ugly cancer her song “I’m gonna love you through this” amazing songs
Thank you for taking such a strong stance against DV/IPV. As a survivor myself, I appreciate that you recognise that it's easy to say "Just leave," from the outside, but that's actually the MOST dangerous time for a woman. It's when their partner is most likely to kill them, aside from when they are pregnant. And just as an added statistics to this, the average woman attempts to leave SEVEN times before she succeeds, which is a damn tragedy. It's nice to know there are still good men out there, your wives are very lucky women.
You need to try tasting Pendleton Whisky from Pendleton Oregon named after the Pendleton Round up! as a survivor of Domestic violence this song is an anthem and something that has helped bring it to light!
Enjoyed your review. I hadn't watched the video for this song in years, and had forgotten how emotionally powerful it was. I think the thing to keep in mind, with regard to the mother's actions, was that the events in the song would have presumably taken place at some point during the 1970s (the song came out during the mid-90s, and lyrics have the now-grown up narrator recalling events that took place twenty years prior, when she was eight-- Martina McBride would have been eight in 1974), at which time there were very few resources and very little support for domestic violence victims. It may have been the the mother saw that this was her only way out of her own personal hell, and also, that she realized that her daughter would be better off growing up in foster care, than growing up in the same house with a father who was such a sadistic monster. I always interpreted it as the moment when the daughter looked back and realized that the sacrifice her mother made on that Independence Day was largely to save her, as it was the only way she could think of to protect her daughter, given the circumstances. Or maybe I'm just over thinking things.
I have heard her live and in person. Maybe some auto tune on recordings but I never noticed it live. She is just simply a natural talent. Just as powerful live.
I saw Martina back when she was opening for a band I can't remember now. But I remember Martina! She is OUTSTANDING live. Also, you should check out (if you can find it) CMT Crossroads Martina McBride and Pat Benatar. It's the most AMAZING hour of powerful female vocals.
Martina has incredible voice. She grew up singing with her dad's band then her own rock band, briefly. Gretchen Peters wrote this song. Trivia: A decade before this video there was a movie with the same name (no, not that one) and the same abuse sub-plot. It starred Kathleen Ouinlan and David Keith. Video and movie have no connection other than husband is abuser and house goes boom.
Glad you like Martina!! She rocks!! It is amazingly hard to sing Martina!!!! Nobody does it like her- and you’re right- it’s like so little effort for her to sing !!!
great song. actually has triple meaning to it (from the abused womans perspective, the usa independence day and religiously as independence from slavery to sin with several biblical metaphors)
This is supposed to be open ended about if she stayed in the house or escaped after she started the fire. The timing on this song was also really interesting. Martina's team spend months begging and radio stations to play the single and they refused and refused. However right around that time the OJ simpson case happened and it tipped the radio stations hands into a position where it was more difficult to refuse. there was a short documentary about it on cmt back in the day called controversy 1993 it used to be on youtube but it's not on here any more Also this was released before autotune existed. the first song to use it was believe by cher in 1998/99, though there has always been effects so maybe there was something there
This song has a whole new meaning to me now. What was she really saying about our Independence Day? Love this song .. let the whole world know .. listen again ..
For those that don't know. Gretchen Peters wrote this Brillance. Martina did the piece proper justice however. There is no greater honor given to writer. Than when the greats take interest in your presentations. Congratulations goes out to both ladies.
If you consider doing movie reviews, I recommend, "The Burning Bed." It is a fact-based movie starring the late Farah Faucett as a battered wife who finally can't take it. He beats her then drinks himself until he collapses on the bed. Sarah's character sets fire to the bed and his charged with his murder. She pleads self-defense at her trial.
For everyone in the comment section saying "this is before autotune" I guess none of them have never heard of Cher. But no, Martina Mcbride is the real deal.
I see in the comments someone mentioned Hannity’s radio show. That’s the first thing I thought of when you were wondering if you heard it on a commercial. I just subscribed to you based on your referral to the “4th of July” as Independence Day. I hate how that name of the holiday has been dumbed down so much. Love your analysis and your blunt language with abusers, lol. That was great! I think you would be moved by her song Concrete Angel, too.
Yeah. I make a point to watch HBO's series John Adams on the week leading up to Independence Day, and on the 4th, I read every word of the Declaration. Also, stay tuned regarding Concrete Angel. - Keith PS: Recommended reading - "Paul Revere's Ride" by David Hackett Fischer.
dude on left took a good hard look in his soul when she said he was drinking again lol! He knows what he is up to and put on notice...we watchin ya son. dont fudge up with ya drinkin ways
So many radio stations play this song on the 4th of July and they don't care what I is and what I talks about...... Every time that I hear it in the fourth I refuse to sing along
