In Seen It, we discuss non-Oscar films from 2015: movies about authors, shut-in kids, troubled musical geniuses, and the Oscar-winning Spectre sneaks into the discussion.

Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. Matt choses the movie and Craig doesn't know what it is until the cameras start rolling, so none of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.

I love the steady undercurrent of story in Marty about how peer pressure can ruin your life. We have an impulse to "stay with the pack" to improve chances of survival, but this often leads to unhappiness. It's nice to see a movie that addresses the simple, but unnatural trick of making a logical, independent choice for yourself when no one else supports you.

If you guys want an odd fresh movie experience, you should give the Japanese film "Memories of Matsuko" a watch. I stumbled onto this film one day and was left with the impression I will literally never see a movie like it ever. It's a little tough to immerse yourself into the format and style, but when you do it's a wild ride. It combines comedy elements with serious downright brutal subjects and events. The only style I can compare it to would be a Wes Anderson film times ten. You two should watch it alone, because I can't imagine two people sharing this odd film experience. Japanese directors really go all out when they have an outrageous idea. Also, great episode, I'm looking forward to the next already,

Have you guys ever seen Horns with Daniel Radcliffe? I loved the book and was slightly disappointed with the movie, but glad they were still able to capture the tone of the book. It needs a little work, but the story is great! (If neither of you have seen it, you should watch it on the show! I'd love to hear/see your reactions)

Spectres problem was that it wanted to meld the gritter tone of the Craig films with the more classic bond formula of the Connery/Moore eras. The result just didn't meld all that well. It also desperately wanted to tie all the Craig era films together and that whole thing just fell flat and making blofeld have a personal connection with bond was entirely pointless. It wasn't the worst Craig bond (it's hard to get much worse then Quantum) but not really the strongest film to go out on. The action scenes were stellar though.
@filmreviewsandsht6862

About Spectre, the complaint everyone has about it just following the standard Bond formula I think is unfair. They didn't write it that way because they don't know any better. They wrote it because they brought back the old UBER Bond villain. And if they're gonna bring him back then why wouldn't they go back to the standard Bond formula? It makes sense, it's an homage. It also has self-awareness to it. Like the opening scene both acknowledges how ridiculous opening scenes in Bon movies have been before and at the same time covering new ground for the franchise with the tracking shot. Spectre is not the greatest movie in the world but I think it gets judged unfairly.

The thing about James bond that makes it so relevant even today is that it's a good juxtaposition to the affairs of the world of the time. The 60's James Bond movies act as a sort of focal point to Cold War ideals, the 90's movies show a world that has been freed from the chains of the Soviet Union and the rise of first world, third world countries, and the current ones tell of a world that is more inter-connected, alongside the increased fear of terrorism groups, whether they be based in ideologies, or religion, and lone wolf style terrorism.

Matt, I've edited Wikipedia for a good few years, and it would actually be against Wikipedia's rules on Neutral Point of View if you were to edit your own article. Don't worry though, a viewer has already fixed your birth date. This video should be a good enough source if someone demands a cited source for that information in the future. As for people continually adding "Matrick" to your article and "Cape Date" to Aaron's, that's vandalism and usually doesn't stay long.

I really don't understand why people seem to dislike Spectre so much. Of course it's not Skyfall! Skyfall is a once in a generation movie, that takes apart over 5 decades of films. Spectre was good old fun Bond film. There is room for both of those things in this world.
@Gillsing
@Gillsing 8 лет назад
Oh, so Skyfall was a good one then? I gave up after Quantum of Solace. Figured I'd wait until the franchise had gone on a long break to accumulate enough good ideas for them to make another movie worth my time and money.

@BlameSociety - "the Idiot" (Iggy) is a bloody masterpiece. Iggy came to my door one day in 1975 and said "Hi! My name is Jimmy - can you spare a joint?" and I rolled him a couple of doobies. Iggy (James Osterberg) was living in the basement apartment for 50 bucks a month on Flores Avenue in West Hollywood. The next year David Bowie took him to U.C.L.A. Medical to treat his heroin addiction and persuaded the Igster to let him (David) produce a couple of albums and hang out in Berlin.

Have you guys seen The Voices? It's a dark comedy staring Ryan Reynolds as a mentally ill man that hears his cat and dog speak to him. This movie proved Ryan Reynolds' value to film before Deadpool ever did, in every other comedic role he's had he's a charming fast talker but here he's the complete antithesis of that and he's STILL funny. Not only is he funny, but he's sympathetic, vulnerable, and pathetic, things you don't see from him often if ever. And most importantly it has a mature and empathetic look at mental illness.

Seeing Borgnine in this was like seeing a cross breed of Martin Balsam and a "little bit" of Edward Robinson. The way he gestured affection with his physical type looked similar to Robinson or other guys of that period. It's hard to believe him as this character when having seen his presence in the later movies of his career.

Specter, He threw his Excalibur, that's what he did and then they ran off into the ending of on his Majesties Secret service, and I bet just like in that film, Q forgot to put the goldfinger windows back in the aston DB5 again (sorry trying not to spoil while trying to talk about the ending of that classic in retrospect to this one) basically it was like a mixed replica of goldfinger and On Her Majesties secret service mashed together and I should have known with John Logan at the helm that that is exactly what he was going to do as he did the same thing for star trek with Nemesis and how telling is it that at that very same moment in time, Die Another Day Came out penned by the same Neil and Paul Pervis that worked on this film, like hey lets do a bad writer Jamboree and sink this bitch like our names are Rick Bloody Berman and Neil Paul Pervis! and my god I was right, it was Moonraker all over again.... and I damn near walked out when they got to that mumble torture fest where he was strapped into that chair and I really wish I had, and I loved that look waltz gave him with his sleepwalking performance, like is that what I'm working with, looks at camera, okay umm lets see. stock bond cliche'.... umm okay what would Donald Plessance do...... and I was fuming at that ending with what he did to the PPK, as he makes this miracle shot and then throws it to the ground, Like no no no, the real bond would never do that, as that thing is like your excaliber, dont throw it to the ground like a common peasant as its served you well and its never betrayed you, you stupid brick in a suit and then they tried to make up for it with him stealing the DB5 at the end and they STILL cant get the details on that thing right, its a dark blue interior with a regular silver paint job and a sports suspension, not champaign and black and leaning all over the place like the tower of Piza', as seriously the thing looks like its riding on a broken suspension. as they probably had to put stiffer shocks on it in goldfinger with all the stuff they put on it, so it never looked nor leaned like that back then. as they had to repaint the thing from red to silver back then when they cut into the roof, and what is the cheapest most common thing to paint something in a hurry, silver. and I love that they can never get that detail right, as its gonna make it a piece of cake to figure out what happened to that thing in a few years.

So my take on Bond is, get John Logan, Neil and Paul the hell out of their and find a new Richard Mybaumn and technically, the original bond series gave bond a far better ending in 1989 in License to Kill where he finally came full circle with his story. and actually maybe you could do a Bond Month every year the same way with zatoichi here with Craig. as its like every bond has his ups and downs and his final end with a nice girl that they finally settle down with and go on with their lives with. kinda a nice touch really.

I thought the same watching Marty about how the leads weren't ugly at all. I suppose that's partly a symptom of them being Hollywood actors at a time when looks were paramount, but both Borgnine's and Blair's initial crushing lack of self-esteem really help to compensate for that and explain to the audience how the people around them could find them so unattractive.
