Marty Stuart plays killer B-bender Telecaster solo on "Get Back to the Country"

Marty demonstrates his mastery of the B-bender playing this pedal steel influenced solo on "Back To the Country" on his iconic sunburst Telecaster, formerly the property of legendary Byrds guitarist Clarence White. This is from Farm Aid 1993, Larry Marrs on bass and Brad Davis on rhythm guitar. I don't know who the other guys are.
Here's a Guitar Player Magazine article about B-bender guitars with Marty talking about how he came to own that guitar in the video, which is the first-ever B-bender guitar: www.guitarplay... and here's a good article on the Fender guitar website: www.fender.com...

That's the late Clarence White's telecaster. This particular guitar is the original B-bender body that White and Gene Parsons invented. The body is comprised of two telecaster bodies glued together to accomodate the large routing cavity required to contain all the mechanical parts for the B-bender device which was crudimentary for the time. That's why the guitar is twice as thick as a regular Fender Telecaster. It's the size of an acoustic guitar with an electric guitar neck.

Ever hear how he got it? He visited Clarence's widow and she asked if he'd like to see it. She then offered it to him and he handed her his checkbook and said pretty much any figure would be within reason. I think she filled out the check for $900.00 because that's what she figured Clarence had in it.

That is Clarence White’s B-Bender guitar that Marty’s playing. Clarence’s wife sold it to him. Clarence White was a guitar player & helped pioneer the country rock sound back in the late 1960s & early to mid 1970s. He also played with the Byrds from 1968 through 1973.

Back in 1997 I drove my semi on tour with Hank Jr., Travis Tritt and Jo Dee Messina. We hauled Marty's Tennessee Treasures 3 trailer rolling museum to the shows. Marty wasn't there but there was some cool stuff in those trailers. An Elvis jumpsuit (Fat Elvis I think), Buck Owens' red, white and blue acoustic guitar and the handwritten first draft of "Blue Suede Shoes" (that was too f'n cool!) Those are what stand out in my memory 26 years later. Marty sure can burn that Tele!🎸

Marty's led an incredible life. The first two records he ever bought were by Lester Flatt and Johnny Cash. His first two professional gigs were playing for first Lester Flatt, and later Johnny Cash. After seeing singer Connie Smith at a State Fair performance, 14 year old Marty begged his mother to take him backstage to meet her. He told her someday he would marry her, which he did years later. Theres much more detail in all of this but the man is living proof of what humans can do if they want.

One of these days I would love to see Marty perhaps when he's done touring put this guitar along with other memorabilia on loan to the different Halls of fame of which Clarence is recognized and Marty is recognized. When my cousin Susie sold Marty the guitar for I think $1,450 in 1980 not too long before her own death she did so hoping that Marty would elevate the prestige and pedigree of the museum worthy prototype Clarence along with drummer Gene Parsons had created. I think she and Clarence both would be proud to see all the places the guitar has been and how well it still sounds over fifty years since being in the hands of it's original owner and co-creator. God Bless and Thanks for reading.

I learned to and I can do it more proficiently than just pushing the strap button down or by standing up to do it. I can bend with the B-Bender device. I've played one but this is overkill and completely unnecessary. My guess is that Clarence White wasn't much of a string bender in his day.
