Eve Ewing cannot write a comic. Tom Breevort should have never put her on an X-Men title and Exceptional X-Men #1 is a terrible start for their From the Ashes. Gail Simone and Jed McKay have to work with this! Get THE HIDDEN EMPEROR graphic novel for an alternative to Marvel Comics:

Notice how all these SJW comics are always like this? Characters sit around talking about their feelings, having emotional breakdowns, talking about their sexualities and romances. It's all they know how to write.

Exactly. Also, let's ignore the decades of adventures and unique experiences the characters have, turning them into generic props for generic, homework stories.

You write what you know, if you look back at some of the most riveting stories.They are written by people who lived through terrible times, personal trauma, and somewhere soldiers. But if l your only experience in life is going to the therapist because mean person said mean thing and lunch with freinds.Well, that's what you were going to write. Well, it shows a lack of imagination and empathy to put yourself in the shoes of another person without literally walking their life path.

What always kills me with these modern-day "homework" writers is that they are so desperate to tell their own fanfics than actually tell stories with decades-old characters. I still remember when Kitty PHASED A GIANT BULLET THROUGH THE EARTH to save humanity. But OF COURSE in the modern day she's a whining bartender saving pointless new characters(instead of using the many already created mutants in comic limbo). Thank you for the excellent review, Mr. JDA.

While the art doesn't look terrible, the story sounds super dull. A comic titled "Exceptional X-Men" implies, well, exceptionalism, and it doesn't look like this has that. There's nothing that screams X-Men to me. I would have expected at least one epic fight scene in the first book of a new series; gives the reader a reason to pick up the second issue. And the cover, while not badly drawn, just doesn't entice someone to pick it up. There's no there there, so this is a pass for me.

@Dreamfox-df6bg
@Dreamfox-df6bg 9 дней назад
Exactly my thinking. She repaired the Shi'ar based Danger Room and other alien technology. Kitty could probably work as an assistant to Mr. Fantastic, handing him the tools he needs. Tools most people in the world couldn't even keep apart. Not saying she would understand how the tools worked or what he is working on, but that's what only very few people in the world could any way. The former teenage mutant ninja, that once nearly killed Wolvedrine, ex-Shield Agent, ex-Guardian of the Galaxy and what not has no need to work as a bartender. In a pinch she could probably work for Doctor Doom without having to do evil stuff. A bartender on an alien space station in another galaxy, maybe.

I say again and again that Marvel had no reason to drop Krakoa so soon. That was a concept to be worked for years. Ok, some things needed to be adjusted and shaken up here and there, but overall the story had MUCH potential that went to the sewers. If they had stuck to Krakoa, there wouldn't be the need of this nostalgia-driven new era so soon. Because it's such a huge drift from the depth of Krakoa to the superficiality of a "X-Men 97" inspired book like Uncanny X-Men, that's it feels like two different universes. In 5 years, the characters had more development and growth than they had in decades. Then, it's all over, and we're back again to same old same old. Been there, done that, seen it all. Except that THIS time I'm NOT buying anything X-related any more!
@Rock-xn3sp

Krakoa is literally the worst thing to happen to X-Men ever and it went on way too long. It was so bad because Hickman was booted out of his own story because the editorial took control, and made it non-stop Hellfire Galas and Pride specials, on top of the worst creators coming on it for identity politics. While what we have now isn't much better, I'm at least glad that period is no longer a thing.

@@Rock-xn3spnope, it's the MOST interesting era and the most profound the X-Men will EVER be. Only Grant Morrison had managed to write adult X-Men stories prior to Krakoa. Characters just being heroic and not having internal struggles is uninteresting, so showing her having an internal struggle made it interesting to me. Wow…you really don’t seem to understand the xmen’s history at all or what makes up the classic stories. Claremont’s era was popular for the character-driven stories and how the character’s motivation is at the center of all great plots (dark phoenix, inferno). The xmen is a soap opera; that’s what distinguishes it from “your classic superhero comic.” Ewing is quite literally doing what claremont did to make xmen the book that it is and distinguish it from things like the avengers. She’s establishing kitty’s mental state (and you’ll remember thought bubbles were quite verbose in the classic xmen days; ex. madelyn pryor’s in inferno), worldbuilding life after krakoa, and building up suspense. It’s…good writing. Literally look at how other xmen storylines start over the 60 years of publication history, and you’ll see that they don’t often center around a big superpowered fight. It’s classically a comic about IDENTITY. I’m really sorry that you haven’t been able to read enough xmen (or haven’t understood the books) from the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, or the 20s to see that it’s the most classic xmen trope to be about WHO the characters are rather than what action sequence is. Ewing is letting us into Kitty’s inner world as she discovers who she is and what she is going to do after krakoa. Separately, Kitty’s Jewish identity is as central to her role in storylines as Colossus being from the Soviet Union or Storm being from Kenya. It appears you are just, sadly, uncomfortable reading about or seeing identities to which you do not relate….The reason xmen fans feel like they know the characters inside and out is because of the emphasis on their identities that contribute to their experience as a marginalized group. If, as it seems, you think comics that focus on identity are terrible, you should not read xmen. It’s totally okay not to like something, but it is just incorrect to say that this book isn’t reminiscent of the way classic xmen books almost always start.

Even in the days of Chris Claremont and Louise Simonson, this would not have worked as the first issue of a team book. While they wrote stories paced like this issue, when they did so it was done as character focus issues AFTER some big 4, 5, 6 issue team epic -- it was never the beginning of team adventure. This issue would work, that is it wouldn't be the letdown here that it is, if it was the first issue of a LIMITED SERIES spun off from a regular X/Mutant series. Different expectations to be met, of course. Compare to issue #1 of the six issue limited series, Kitty Pryde & Wolverine to see what I mean. It does have similar pacing, but let's be honest, the characterization of Kitty is far better back then... He does definitely make some false assumptions that are puzzling though. As you say, what virtue signalling is there in a long time Jewish character wearing a Star of David. This might be what happens when somebody is right 80% of the time but they think they're right 100% of the time.

0:43 “X-Men is obviously a male centric property?” Disagree bud. Think I’m done with your videos. I don’t think comics need to be a big vessel for change or virtue signal, but you started this off being pretty passively bigoted in your tone with your snarky little “I don’t want to assume” comment. Why don’t you tell us about the book and THEN provide some commentary?

I have to say that was a big mis-step (mis-speak?) on his part. In the '80s heyday X-Men absolutely had a significant female readership, I think one time it was estimated at 40% female readership. And it has always had pretty close to half female team membership, whether X-Men or New Mutants, whether Chris Claremont or Louise Simonson. I think the only DC book that came close to similar readership percentages was the Legion Of Superheroes... And it's nothing new to superhero comics, even to Marvel -- the early days of Iron Man back in the '60s had it was estimated the highest female readership of any Marvel super hero comic at that time.
