It really is a shame about the awful holes in the shield. For the bullet effects I can *kind of* understand it but for the others there's absolutely no reason it had to be that way. That slash and electric effect could easily have just clipped to the edges of the shield 😞
This figure looks incredible, while i like the Marvel Comics 80th Anniversary Alex Ross Cap, i perfer this version more, especially the head sculpts. The only two downsides are 1) they didn't include an alt black-ink around his face head to make him look very Jack Kirby art style, and 2) they didn't replace a clip with a straps on behind Cap's shield. Overall, it looks perfect, great stuff Robo.
Really hoping I can track one of these down. After being gradually drip-fed better and better Caps (Wolf Cap, 80th Cap, and now 20th Cap) I'm thinking this will be the one.
Honestly this figure looks super cool and I live captain America, but the holes in the shield kills me because unlike what I think it was Dwight said, I don’t have tons of shields I’m new to the line and I’d rather not be forced to display an effect on his shield or buy a dif fig just for a clean shield
The best shield to use if you don’t want to use the one with effects. Use the toybiz series 1 Captain America shield it has the same similar colors. And it is about the same size that’s what I use for mine
I appreciate that Hasbro put a bit more paint on these anniversary figures, feels appropriate for the Toybiz Legends throwback. Though given the slightly higher price point they better give more paint Speaking of the higher price point, there’s no excuse for not just including a second non hole-having shield. A figure like this ought to be a definitive Cap figure, and for the most part it is, save for the fact that you can’t have his shield just on its own. And you can’t even really give him a shield from another Cap figure since the colors and size won’t match the version with the effects on them
If you are looking for a battle damaged cap look, try the shield from the what if zombie cap. It works pretty well at giving a post fight or mid fight cap
Hulk and Iron Man look cool too, but I really hope Hasbro takes notes on themselves with this one. This is by far the best ML Captain America ever made. They really need to do this kind of justice for every major Marvel player. Give us undeniably definitive versions of Spider-Man, Wolverine, Thor, Hawkeye, Cyclops, etc. Sure there are more who need it but that’s my short list for now. They already have most of the sculpts they need just make a few tweaks like this one and they’ll be near perfect like this guy. Like please just give us more accessories and paint, and I’ll be willing to pay 30 bucks for it.
They already did the Spider Man,Wolverine and Cyclops. But I hope one dyay they make a Deluxe Version of Classic Cyclops with Optical beam and changeable arms so we can have a jacket version and plain version
I got 2 of this figure (one to open and one to keep in package), but one had better paint on the head and the other had better paint on the body, so I ended up opening both to get a better painted overall figure and--worth it! For getting the shield out, maybe they can revisit the Ultimates versions of characters and put a neutral shield with that Cap. I'll admit the thought of the Ultimates on newer figure bodies is enticing (especially Thor and Hulk).
I like displaying my comic figures in their Marvel vs Capcom poses, so having peg holes all the time in this is gonna kinda take away from that, but other than that, the figure is amazing.
I did something with this figure that I do not often do at all... I bought 2. One to open, and one to keep mint in that beautiful nostalgic packaging. This figure is just so great, I'd say perfect in fact. I had a couple small paint marks on mine, a bit disappointing, but they aren't terrible. As far as the shield, I actually took the one from the original toy biz Cap and it works perfectly with this one, I've got a different Cap figure with the maskless head sculpt on it holding the shield with the effects on it. I honestly cannot stop admiring this figure, it's so well done and I kind of like the idea of him "taking up the shield" of his ancestor, haha. Right now he's on the small shelf I have behind my couch that's reserved for the newest and/or best figures facing off against another great new figure, Baron Zemo
The shield is cool and I'll never turn down cool effects for photography, but for people like me who this is their first comic cap from hasbro, a second shield absolutely should've been packed in, especially with the price tag we're paying for these 20th Anniversary figures. Also, I don't know how much it bothers you guys, but I hate the way the dot-matrix tampo looks on the masked head's lips.. I'm in the process of repainting those to make it look a lot less cold-sorey haha Still a quality release tho and I'm looking forward to Toad! Great review Robo!
This is the Steve Rogers and Captain America I’ve been waiting for! Aside from the shield holes it’s just about perfect aside from torso rocker, drop down hips and butterfly joints. But those are minor wants. 🤩
Holy shizz! You know I also passed on this thinking blah blah another retro Cappie but damn those details and that portrait is bananas! Thank goodness for your review!
Out of all the Captain Americas we have, I gotta agree with Rob that the 20th anniversary Cap is definitely the best along with 80 years even though the 20th anniversary has bright colors that pop on the Avengers display. Thank you for the video.
I can't wait to get mine. I remember working at Toys R Us when the first Toy Biz Marvel Legends came out. They were so awesome but I cut my hands up so much opening them up.
Respect that you were able to getrid of your old toybiz cap. I unloaded lots of toybiz legends years ago, but could never bring myself to get rid of that cap.
I’m intending to use the slash effect as a light reflectipn effect, so that way I can do the classic pose with the shield up and not be bothered bu those holes.
ROBO!!! I was done. 80th was my one and done. Now you and your review have me searching BBTS for this figure. When the Hasbro Pulse guys showed off this Cap I was like "Yeah that's a skip". Seeing you present it though.. I just got to have it. HASBRO!! Hire this man right now!!! Great job as always Robo. Looking forward to Saturday morning.
@@Barthedanz I would think so, although i prefer the shields that have the straps as opposed to the clip, since if the clip breaks it can't hold the shield
I’m loving the look of this Cap, but the best comic shield still has to be the one that came with the Marvel Now Cap from the Winter Soldier/Mandroid Wave
I love this. I can easily forgive the holes since those effects are so nice. I'd almost certainly always keep the bullets effect on since that's just too nice.
The red fill-wash looks less like cell-shading to me than like Cap's been working out hard and gotten a bit sweaty. It's not distracting enough to take away from the greatness of the figure, but I think it may have been better if it was more gradient than just a colour-change.
So happy when they reissues this figure. Having just restarted collecting figures last 5 years had no chance at this guy and def not paying secondary price or scalper price for anything. This is def my favorite captain America fig got rt now. It’s amazing. Just wish didn’t have the holes in the shield but do like the accessories, guess can’t have it all
Faceoff Cap was the one that stayed on my shelf for a decade+, really annoyed with the shield here on this one. For all that extra price, they could have added a non action one in there too
Ah-such nostalgic memories of having to fix all the paint slop on this figure. And look! The new one is painted just as sloppily-fixing it all over again will sure take me back.
I think that the 80th Anniversary was based on Alex Ross design for Cap, in which the blue and red hue closer to the colors of the Stars and Stripes. Also, the head looks like it was sculpted to mimic Ross design, which in turn appears to be heavily influenced by the original design of Simon & Kirby in the early 40s Captain America comics. The New Cap to me looks like it is more 60s - 70s inspired Cap. The head kind of reminds me of Kirby’s Cap from the 1960s. Anywho, both figs are cool, but the MVL LGDs one would be my preference too.
My Cap is on the way, and I was definitely swayed by your review, so cheers mate 👍 Just to add regarding the holes in the shield, there's a sort of easy cheap fix: fill the holes with white coloured blu tack lol. Or just put a matching white sticker to cover the holes. For photography purposes, I think it won't be too noticable.
Despite your voice, I totally heard your reminiscing in Boomhauer's voice. "Dang old dang old Legends clamshells would just say soon cut YOU open in the TRU parking lot, I tell you what!"
I don't collect Cap, I only have one of the 80 years for my DC vs Justice League display. I hadn't planned on getting one but you always make the figures seems so much cooler and more fun when you get them in hand. And I'm looking at these colors and the 20 years color palette looks a lot better with the Mafex Superman.
This new Cap is a better shade of blue than the 80th Anniversary version, and has a better head sculpt. The unmasked head reminds me of Wyatt Russell, the actor that plays U.S. Agent in the MCU lol
I found it very funny that back then we did need a warning about the chocking hazard I never thought about eating my action figures considering most of are toys back then were very small. Army men, mighty max, and micro machines plus countless other lines back then
I have been collecting Legends since the beginning. I didn't getbToad or Hulk from series 1, but I do have both Iron Man and Cap. This figure looks great the shield I agree they should have had a plug for the holes that just made it look normal. However this figure is amazing looking. I can't wait to get my hands on this on. I have the Iron Man just have to wait for Cap and Hulk and I'm very interested to see Toad . Thanks Robo for the review
If we had two shields this set would have been perfect, or if the effects just hooked onto the rim so the surface would be smooth. I wish Hasbro would start using the straps the MCU caps get, those clips stress me out
Just last year I opened my last in clamshell ML series one Cap. I thought I gave one to my son who loves Cap. Alas I don’t have in package comparison. But I do have the fig. I’m surprised to see that there are few pics of that comparison. I’ll do some on Instagram. Thus fig is awesome! I have nits like anyone else but overall, the figure is unparalleled!
This figure looks fantastic. I agree about it either needing a different way to attach the effects or a clean shield. The GI Joe Classified Alley Viper has a great way of holding the shield. Better than the fragile clip on this. The 80 Years Cap has better range of movement with his wrinkled thighs. I use the alternative head to the one you have on your's Robo. To my mind it looks better.
Ha, I see you Stealth Iron Man, up by Robo's head. You thought you could get away from me didn't you. I kind of want this fig to add to my albeit very limited collection. The idea of Cap deflecting bullets while Spider-Man leaps over the top of him just is something I need in plastic. Or doing a Cap Wolveirne square off with that slash effect.
Ya know, I bet if the sold regular shields for this fig on Hasbro Pulse for $5, people would buy ‘em (I would). They could do that for all sorts of effects that are lacking as pack-ins… flame effects for Red Hulk, a regular Cain Marko head, different blast effects for different characters, the diorama piece for ML 20th Hulk….
I like your Idea of giving us bare neck Captain America with Arrow shield and Round with no holes plus I would make it a 2pk with the Original Bucky. That way they can pack as much into a 2pk box. Also they could give us an Isiah Bradly on same buck with new head sculpt and bare neck.
I could easily see them including an extra normal shield with another character, but why do i get the feeling its more likely theyll just re-release this again with the normal shield
There are some accessories that even if they come with a many versions of a character should still come vanilla. Hasbro should have included either a normal shield or peg holes. This should have been treated as if it was someone's first classic Cap. Which given the last time one was released is fair. Still it would also be nice to get a classic Cap with a body with the new features(double ball torsos, dumbbell neck joints, drop down hinges, pinless arms/legs).
I guess they could rerelease the shield with no holes in it with a classic Bucky, sure he never used it but Bucky would practically be made to go along with this Cap figure anyway, why not toss in a shield? I picked this up during a Marvel Legends fever I had in February; picking this up right after the Doctor Strange and Skrull army builders, then finding Zemo just a few days later to go along with him, then getting the whole Fantastic 4 team from the retro wave, it was a great time for adding classic Marvel characters to the collection. I wasn't too happy with the colours or paint on the heads on the 80 Years version, so this was a welcome replacement. For this one, the paint is a tad sloppy in places and the shield clip did snap on me a day after opening it which has never happened to me before (however I found a fix). Still, I think this is a great release, the new head and shoulder straps look so much better to me and the masked head (I know this sounds weird) reminds me in a good way of the 90's film version, it looks like a live-action version of the classic costume rather than a comic based version, but I kinda like that about it.
