Covering the first of 10 or so chemicals that I have found useful over the years as a farmer and mechanic. Marvel Mystery Oil has been around for almost 100 years now, and for good reason. It actually works! This is no cure for a blown engine or serious case of neglect, but as a regular part of routine maintenance, it can make difference!

My Dad used MMO in all of his vegicles and yard equipment and the engines never wore out. I believe MMO works period. I use it in everything that has an engine and never have mechanical failures. it also makes a great aluminium polish and gun oil! Great stuff!

I started using Marvel in my '97 Mercury Villager, in the gas. After a few tanks, the gas mileage went from 18-19 mpg to 22 mpg, and it was consistent. Great stuff.

You can use MMO in air tools ! good ! I was wondering if you can use MMO to mix with chain saws / leaf blowers/ and such AND - can MMO be used in the gas as a fuel preservative ( like lawn mowers / weed eaters when put away for the winter ? I don't like using " sta-bil" - I heard it isn't all that good.
@tpach89
@tpach89 6 лет назад
tinkergene Sta-bil is good stuff. It can store gas for up to three years, I believe. Marvel can stabilize gas for a few months, 3-4. It has some of the ingredient that stabilizes fuel but not as much as Sta-bil. I personally use MMO as my stabilizer.

Turtle Wax bought MMO years ago . Smart move. my dad being a WWII vet said they used MMO in their fuel on the C47's and C-46's that flew the hump .A private pilot friend of mine said he has been using it for years and of all his buddies who fly he is the only one who hasn't had an engine drop a cylnder. Guess he discovered what the greatest generation already figured out. The NAVY used it in the Corsairs in the Pacific and the AAC used it in the P-51 Rolls Royce 2500 HP super charged engines. I don't know what other prrof you need. If its good enough for a P-51 its good enough for a F150 and my Honda Accord. (Kinda ironic in a way though huh?) Great for Air Tools and lot less expensive. I wipe my guns down with it. Gets rid of rust fast. I like the wintergreen smell.

I am retired now from the military and another career. I make a lot of short trips and during the winter I don’t drive that much. Have a pickup and a car. Sometimes the gas gets old. I use it in the fuel every 3 or 4 fill ups for the last 30 years. Knock on wood, I have never had a fuel injector problem. The engines run smooth. I drive conservatively. Not scientific, but I do believe with conservative driving it makes a little bit better fuel economy. On the truck at the end of the summer I checked the throttle body after about 30,000 miles. It was cleans. The truck uses some oil now. About 100 to 500 miles Before an oil change I add 320 ml to the crankcase. The truck has seen better days. However, I believe this material is good. It is essentially thin naphthaenic pale oil and is a very gentle cleaner on the inside of the engine. It’s been around since 1923 for a reason.

If you have 5w-30 oil and put 1 qt per 4qts oil you will yield a oil viscosity of 1w-26 it lowers the visc by 4w that's what they taught us in engines class in school.

Air cooled VWs love this stuff in the gas tank. Just plain dry gasoline is very hard on the upper cylinders and valves. A lubricant like MMO (or 2 stroke oil but I prefer Marvel) in the gas tank fights rust and corrosion and keeps rubber parts like fuel pump diaphragms and carburetor accelerator pumps from drying out. A lubricant in the gas also keeps throttle shaft bushings from wearing out on carburetors. This stuff has more benefits than people realize especially in old carbureted engines.

Great video Erik. I have a Marvel Mystery Oiler which consists of a glass container that feeds a regulator and is drawn into a vacuum port on the carburetor and can be times for an "X" ammt of drips per minute on my aircooled VW. Being most "unless modified" VW head have sodium filled valves and the lack of lead in today's fuel, the aircooled VW is prone to sucking a valve. I've been using MMO for years, great stuff. Thanks for sharing! Kind regards, Eric Dee.

@ Farpoint Farms- Thanks for doing such a great video on Marvel Mystery Oil. I have been using MMO in the gas in my car, truck, and lawn mower for 3 years at every fill up at 4 oz MMO for every 10 gallons of gas. Since I have been using MMO in my car, I have been getting 1.5 to 2 extra miles per gallon on the highway. Walmart sells the quart (32 oz) size at $3.88 and at that price, I am actually saving money using MMO with the savings in gas. That's not counting the added benefits of a much smoother idle, keeping the fuel injectors clean, and lubricating the top end of the engine and the fuel pump. Using MMO in the gas of my 15 year old Sear's Craftsman's lawn mower makes it very easy to start, even after sitting over the winter. It will probably last longer than Sears will!!!
@FarpointFarms

There are some out there that swear this is "Snake oil" but I'm a believer. I too get better gas mileage and I'll bet it helps lube the fuel pump while it's in the gas as well. My buddy has a 2006 Hyundai Tiburon that had a lifter that wouldn't pump up. It was rattling and causing a miss. He tried changing the oil, and running a oil additive, but it didn't help. We put a 1/2 a bottle of MMO in it and he drove it home. Next day the noise it gone! He's a believer now too!
@snowcat1235
@snowcat1235 5 лет назад
According to Marvel you're supposed to use 20 percent in your engine. I developed a lifter tic in my 99 Grand Cherokee which just hit 200k miles. I changed my oil today, this morning,added 5 quarts of Pennzoil Pure Plus Full Synthetic, and one bottle of Marvel mystery oil. I took a trip to my brothers house and back totaling about 50 miles. Let the car cool off, went out a little while ago, and I can already hear a difference in how the engine sounds. Now the ticking noise goes away quicker than before. Goes away now before hitting full operating temp. Before had to be at full temp before noise goes away. I'm going to be putting 350 miles on my Jeep within the next week, I'm willing to bet the ticking will be completely gone pretty soon.

You put the MMO in your oil when you put fresh oil in? do you run it until 3,000 miles for your regular change and leave it in the whole time? I thought it was for 300 miles? Thanks for any info!
@franknew9001
@franknew9001 Год назад
@ Mike Kollin-- I would say how long you keep Marvel Mystery Oil in your oil depends on how many miles are on the engine. For newer cars you can go the full 3,000 to 5,000 miles with MMO in the oil. For higher mileage cars that likely have some sludge in the engine, I would only keep MMO in the oil for 300 to 500 miles. In my case, I have a 2002 Chevy truck that now has 160k miles on it. Several years ago, it had a loud lifter ticking noise. The truck was a quart low on oil, so I added a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to the oil. Soon the lifter ticking noise disappeared. I drove the truck about 400 miles and when I changed the oil, it was filthy. This was telling me that the MMO was removing some of the sludge out of the engine. If you have a higher mileage car and add MMO to the oil, I would check the oil more often than normal, and if it appears dirty, I would change the oil sooner than later. You don't want this dirty oil clogging up the oil filter.
@nisgua
@nisgua 7 лет назад
0.5 Quarts in the Engine (with each oil change) + 0.5 Quarts in the Gas Tank (per 20 gallon tank). That formula will keep you out of the dealership with engine problems for the life of your vehicle most likely.

Years ago the label stated to use 4-oz per qt of oil, now it says 8-oz.. I used 8-oz in a differential that had heavy carbon buildup and it either dissolved the crud or loosened it up and could be wiped off with a paper towel after a few months of limited use (good stuff). I had a gummed up engine and poured a qt of MMO in the oil and drove it like normal for a month or longer and the engine started to run smoothly, after changing the oil it was night and day difference. A shot in the gas tank also does wonders, no need to use fuel injector cleaner because MMO keeps the injectors firing correctly.. Small engines: I use 1 TBS each of MMO and 2-stroke oil in every 2-gal gas can and have no issues with varnish or corrosion.

I have used a quarter cup of Marvel Mystery Oil after every oil change to my Camrys engine since she was brand new. 17 years and just shy of 400k Miles later my baby girl still runs and purse like the day I bought her. I also add about 628 Oz every other tank of gas and in a recent Highway trip from Miami Beach two shithole Gainesville I was clocking 41 and 42 MPG with the AC running doing about 80 down the turnpike.. I think of it as an oil cleaner; it removed deposits in parts of the engine that are coated with oil. So adding 10% MMO to your oil would eventually help unstick clicking hydraulic valve lifters. I would not use it in the gasoline as oil in gas tends to destroy your catalytic converter and oxygen sensors. It thins out the oil, so add the same amount of Lucas HD Oil Stabilizer to the oil to 'thicken' the oil mix back up.

@44hawk28
@44hawk28 2 года назад
The high phosphorus content is why it's such a good cleaner. I've seen it clear stuck lifters before you could actually close the hood after you put some in the engine. But usually it takes 10-15 minutes. With the 3.6 L engines and a lot of these engines that have the hydraulic actuated lifters that the camp followers are riding on it is critical to keep those things clean because oil does not run through them quite readily. Another Engine That Could use it quite often is the 5.4 l Ford 3 valve. It's the only way I know of to clean those oil pressure passages inside the heads that allow the cam phasers to function. And several years ago when they took the sulfur out of the gasoline, about 15 years ago I think now or maybe a little bit longer it makes a great lubricant for the fuel system.

MMO is really good to add to any air tool or air solenoid too. I used to work on factory machines that had air solenoids that would stick due to the air feeding the solenoid having moisture in it. The moisture would make the lubricant in the solenoid to turn gummy. We advised our customers to use MMO in their air lines. It would lubricate the solenoids. It would not gum up when wet. If you just thought, "What is this guy talking about, then this does not apply to you." The folks that need the information will say, "Oh wow, great info".

Thanks for the video. I put it in my fuel tank and hopefully will be able to get some mpgs back. It has dropped a little in the past couple of years . I will update in a few days to see if anything happens. 🤞👍* Update - it didn't help with the mpgs. I had the lights come on the dash. Checked it with the code reader. Catalytic converter below threshold on bank 2. I'm gonna replace the o2 sensors before replacing the converter. From what I understand that the downstream o2 sensor is what could trip the code. So it was worth a try. With 150,000 miles , it's time. I did pull the air intake off to replace the bank 1 ( firewall) plugs and upstream O2 sensor. The intake wasn't too dirty. This is for the Toyota transverse v-6.

Marvel Mystery Oil at 200 degrees probably has a higher viscosity than your 20 weight oil and most cars today. It's probably a little bit higher than 30 weight at 200 degrees. It was originally used as a motor oil for World War One radial aircraft engines. In 1923 was bottled and named Marvel Mystery Oil. If you wish to, you can easily run a 1-quart mix in your engine as a standard practice.

It's good stuff but didn't help my 454 lifter tick. I used it in the oil per the instructions twice and the ticking continued. I'm not a fan of additives but a friend of mine swears by Motorkote and insisted I give it a shot. I did and haven't had a single tick in more than a year. Maybe MMO loosened it up Motorkote got the win. I still use a rich mix of MMO every 3-4 tanks in my Grand Marquis with 117K miles and it has helped reduce carbon build up. I'm fairly certain it works because I was getting a spark knock under load but not anymore. MMO is also great around the shop. I keep a 50/50 mix of MMO and ATF in my squirt can for rusted bolts and for wiping down tools and saw blades. It's good stuff and at $3.88\quart it's worth it to keep several bottles on hand.

I got a bottle for a slight valve tick. Most people probably wouldn't notice but it was bothering me. I don't particularly want to remove the intake, cowl, etc to access the valve cover in this cold weather. I didn't want anything too harsh so I used half a quart of mmo (2 oz of that was in the tank) and it's significantly quieter after about 50 miles. I'm due for an oil change soon and will probably use the rest then and repeat every year or 2

MMO is very good as a additive and I have been using it for years. The original Slick 50 was the best additive I have ever seen and worked wonders. Seriously, a 10 mpg jump in a '80 Sunbird w/a 2.5L. From 31 to 41 mpg! In fact it saves my motor after a bad head gasket FILLED the motor with antifreeze. That formula was around only a couple of years and was changed because of legal action; never worked worth a damn after.

bought a lawntractor from a person who never change the oil , i changed the oil and the oil did not take long to get dark, my question is , how much of the marvel should i put in the oil before i change it again ? i am sure there is still alot of crud in there, GREAT INFO !!!!!!!
@FarpointFarms
@FarpointFarms 5 лет назад
I'd put about 4oz in it, and run it until it's hot. then drain it again. After that it should be better. You can add about 1oz to the next oil change and keep it in there for the life of the oil.

I use it in every 3rd to 4th fill-up with my gas. I might occasionally use it by mixing it in with the oil. But 500-1,000 miles seems a bit long on diluted oil. I probably go 60-80 miles before draining it.

I personally use it all 8 of my cars 1 qt at every oil change n add 4oz once a week regardless of filling up or not since usually put gas once a week anyway due to multiple cars. Can guarafuckintee U after a decade not had any engine issues and does make a difference in gas mileage.

You're not taking full advantage of MMO. What you're doing is like only using soap with every 3rd or 4th car wash. Using MMO full time in the oil "prevents" sludge buildup. Only using it occasionally just before an oil change isn't allowing MMO to do what it does best.

Add 4 ounces to the gas, an ounce or 2 to the oil and see if it helps. It does sound like it may be a transmission problem might also be the issue.

My family owns a 1954 Mercedes 300B sedan (gas), ran fine until 1970 when it was put in the backyard in North Texas (very dry area). In 75-76 or so had an electrical short in the dash so stopped turning it over then. Took out spark plugs, flooded cylinders with Marvel Mystery oil and replaced the plugs. It hasn't been turned over since 1975. I wonder if it's at all restorable???
@FarpointFarms
@FarpointFarms 5 лет назад
I wouldn't doubt it. Pull the plugs, drain and refill the oil, drain the gas and spin it over in 10 second spurts for a 1/2 an hour to lube everything and free up the rings.

It will not work well for you- MMO will thin out the oil a bit causing the consumption to be more. You can slow the consumption by using a thicker oil but that engine has some design flaws

Ok, I have a perfectly good qudrajet on my 454ci in motorhome. It sat a while and I had too spend hundreds of bucks cleaning the gas tank and fuel lines, replaced both fuel pumps, fuel regulator, filters (AND) HAD TOO GET THE QUADRAJET REBUILT! I told the shop I added mmo too my 6 qts of oil too help clean the inside of the engine gummed up bad with bent and broken push rods and stuck valves and lifters, which I had too replace everything anyway I told the shop I was thinking of using mmo in the tank! I am not in any way trying too go against MMO but, His face lit up red and he gave me a 5 minute lecture on what gas/fuel additives do too the inside of a carburators/TBI ALSO. He said never put any additives in the gas. It's not good for internal parts of a fuel system! Now like I said, I like MMO, I have been using it since the late 60s and believe in it but, when the top carburator shop in my area says what it does to the inside workings of a gasoline/fuel system I believe it. I will keep using it in my oil but, not in the gasoline! By the way, that carburator rebuild cost me almost $400. So I'll take his word for it! Anyone who disagrees with my findings I'm sorry, you have the right too use it if you like, I agree too disagree with you! Fuel systems shouldn't be played with! Engines are built too run on combustible liquids and not oils!
