In this video I give my opinion of Marvel Mystery Oil. I believe it does have a effective use in today's automotive market, but probably not in a well maintained vehicle.

When I was approximately 12 yrs old, My Dad was given a 1946 Hudson Pickup Truck which has a small 6 cyl. engine in it that was seized up from not being used for so long. So we towed it home and My Dad took out the spark plugs and poured MMO into each cylinder and let it set for 2 weeks. After two weeks we tried to turn it and sure enough...... it did. Amazing stuff.

So you mean that even "modern" cars that use "modern" motor oils and "modern" detergent gasoline still experience issues of carbon build up, sludge, varnish build up, clogged fuel injectors, failed fuel pumps due to insufficient lubricity of even top tier fuels, seized piston rings (regardless of the fact that top tier fuel was used and quality "modern" motor oil), clogged/destroy cats due to prolonged exposure to dirty exhaust fumes brought on by the previous mentioned issues......... yeah, l just gotta laugh when people who should definitely know better than to say that today there is less of a need for a proven product that is safe and beyond any shadow of a doubt provides much better cleaning abilities that ANY top tier fuel or modern motor oil alone and yes, even in today's "modern" cars! The vast majority of issues that l deal with when servicing cars with running/performance issues l can trace back to carbon build up, sludge build up, (regardless of the fact that regular service was done using top tier fuel and quality motor oil on schedule) which then lead to other issues, and yes, that is in modern cars! Some of these issues that l've had to repair, once the repair was completed, l suggested to the owner a regular routine using MMO in the fuel a few times per year and in the crankcase 300 miles before oil changes and voila! Even 10 years later, they have not experienced those carbon/sludge/oil flow issues again! "Modern" motor oil/"Modern" gasoline my ass LOL!

Sir I Drive a semi Truck that hauls Liquid Asphalt. I noticed my Truck Sluggish on Hills that it normally takes with no problem. So I put in the MMO in my fuel. Almost immediately I noticed my Truck come back to life the same day (540 miles). Then I thought of putting a piece of hardened asphalt in 1 once of MMO. Since Asphalt is Oil. Immediately it started to melt the Asphalt back to liquid form. I the test bottle in the side box and moved on. The next day I checked it. The MMO had dissolved the piece of Asphalt back to liquid. I am sold on this product! Gonna put it in my engine oil next on all my vehicles! Keep up the good work. I’ll keep on Trucking with this Product.

I've been using Marvel Mystery Oil in my GM cars and trucks for 38 years...... Low cost engine insurance. When use regularly keeps your engine running smoothly with less wear on the motor. Just add one quart and fill the rest with oil. Works with both regular and synthetic oils. Add 6 ounces to a full tank and as the gas pump gets lubrication your also lubricating the top cylinder of the engine.

Great video! I am a firm believer in this product. I have seen it first hand. I have an old tractor from the 1960's that I inherited from my grandfather. He was old school and used marvel mystery oil regularly. This was a heavily used engine. So I disassembled the engine and I was surprised that it COMPLETELY clean. I checked the cylinder and crank shaft and they had very little wear. They were still within manufacturer specs. Marvel Mystery oil is the only thing that can explain this. I have continued to use it in all my equipment.

I'm about the same age as you and sounds like our automotive skill set are very comparable. I appreciate your respectfulness and your tasteful humor as you replied to people posting comments. That says a lot about you as a person. I feel the same way as you about everything you said in the video. New oils are incredible compared to the older oils. I have recently purchased a 1987 Chevy Truck with 83,000 miles that had been setting for maybe 6 years. I bought it from my cousin and know the history of it. A fuel problem is why he parked the truck otherwise it ran fine. I can see some sludge under the oil cap. The oil was really thick when I drained it cold (have not started truck yet... but everything in the fuel system will be brand new after I rebuild the TBI this weekend so will be starting it up soon). I can turn the engine over easily by hand using a socket and ratchet. I have never really used many additives but after looking at a lot of videos like yours about MMO and many other products... I will use MMO in this truck at least for a while. My game plan is... pouring 20% MMO in with conventional oil and a cheap oil filter then running it until the thermostat opens and will drain the oil immediately. Will do this same process again after running 100 miles. Will take a good look a the oil during that oil change and decide what I want to do next. I will eventually run a quality synthetic oil and filter like I do in all my other vehicles. If I can remember to find my way back to this comment I will post the results on how things went. Thanks again for the video. It was nice to watch and read over the many comments.

Robert, the viscosity issue is discussed on the MMO website. I believe it depends on the ratio of MMO:Oil. Here is the statement on the MMO website off their FAQ section: "MMO is about a 5 wt oil. It will reduce the high end number of a multi-vis oil by 4 wt points. The low end number will stay the same when used as per directions."

I've been using MMO for at least 50 years, touted initially as, "a BMW mechanic's secret." I've seen it do literal "magic" on at least 2 occasions on different engines in less than 2 minutes. I've recommended it highly ever since I noticed how "interesting" it was from the beginning. When I first got a 2007 Piaggio MP3 250 scooter that weighs 540 lbs. at 5000 miles on the odometer it was getting about 70 MPG. At a little over 10k miles now, the last time I got gas it was getting 95 MPG. YAY, MMO!!! Edgar Cayce called Castor Oil "Palma Christi," and when used a certain way, it "normalizes" adhesions (or scar tissue) in the body fairly quickly. MMO!!! I had no idea it was mostly Castor Oil. Thanks for that info, bro'!

Excellent presentation. Thank you. I have used MMO exclusively in gasoline for the life of several vehicles (since brand new until very old). What I have noticed is that it helps prevent wear of cylinder rings. Cylinder compression would stay strong as in a new car for much much longer. A car with 75k miles would feel peppy as if it had only 40 or 50k miles. A car with 180k miles would feel strong as if it had only 100k miles on the engine. I recommend using it ONLY in gasoline in small amounts - 4-6 ounces per 10 galons of fuel. It is OK to add a a liitle bit more than what instructions say.

On the Marvel Mystery Oil website. It states that the viscosity is a straight 5W grade oil. Mixed with a multi-grade oil drops the operating temperature number down by 4W levels. For example 20% Marvel Mystery Oil mixed with 80% of 5W-30 would equal 5W-26. Obviously using the correct viscosity oil is critical to longevity. Great video Robert.

makes plenty of sense....recently purchased two used cars for family members and used this product to clean motor before switching to quality oils and filters...unknown maintenance history of them was the prime reason....did not feel it would hurt if responsibly used and could only help....after several oil change intervals with product engines were definitely smoother and quieter. guess I'm a believer in this case.

I use this stuff in my truck, I was talking with my supervisor at work about what was going on with my truck, I told him when I would put regular gas in my truck it would get a real bad spark knock. Well, I told him I hated having to run mid grade gas in my truck because that was the only thing that would make my truck run right. He told me to try some Marvel Mystery oil, I put it in with a tank of mid grade the did it again with regular gas and it stoped like he said it would.

This man has old school knowledge and knows what he's talking about. Good info. About the ATF thing at 8:36.... I remember long ago people use to "clean the valves" by dribbling ATF down the carb holding the engine at high idle. I suppose ATF would loosen carbon build up but I don't know exactly how well. I just know it's a sure way to hydro-lock a motor if not careful.

It was designed to clean and keep clean carb jets. The usage in oil is a by product. It still does a good job, detergents in oil break down, I have seen some dirty modern motors, especially ones with extended service intervals. I would use it as a flush, by adding to oil and letting the car run for 15mins.

History lesson, Marvel Mystery Oil started out as a motor oil for World War 1 radial aircraft engines. In 1923 they started bottling it and calling it Marvel Mystery Oil and adding a red dye. If you use it and today's engines, all one needs to do is about a week before they're going to change the engine oil, when the engine is usually down a half to a full quart, top it off with Marvel Mystery Oil run it for a week and then change oil. It is especially effective at keeping the sieves on the multiple displacement Engine Systems from clogging up as well as making sure that any chain tensioners you may have in the engine continue to work properly. Another use is to add a court during the winter months in cold climates and it keeps the engine oil thinner at the low temperatures so that the engine starts easier, and yet at 200° the oil viscosity is not compromised. It is more than up to the task of helping to maintain be most advanced internal combustion engines that we use in Automobiles, motorcycles and aircraft to this day. Almost all additives in oils today were around by 1980. It isn't the additives that keep the engine cleaner, it's the detergent. An old-school trick was to put a quart of transmission fluid into your oil for a few weeks before you got an oil change. Because that would help condition the seals, especially the valve guide seals. I've seen engines from the 1960s run 600000 miles. It wasn't the engine that was the problem by the 1960s. It was the suspension system and the fact that the suspension systems were being overtaxed by the larger and more powerful engines that work coming online. Remember that the first GTO had a 400 cubic inch engine putting out about 360 horse and only had 9 in drum brakes that were only 2 in or so wide. Modern engines are not particularly unique, especially with some of the new Engineers that have come on board who never turned a wrench they still sometimes overcomplicate things. When an engine gets overly complicated it is even more incompetent to make sure it stays clean inside. The multiple displacement system has an excellent example. There is no reason to shut off four cylinders to make the engine get better fuel mileage. All you need to do is when the engine is not requiring a load is to cut back on the air fuel mixture. Lean it out to about 11 and 1/2 to 1 and believe me it will get much better fuel mileage than just cutting off four of eight cylinders. You just can't convince Engineers who have absolutely zero experience of this fact. A further added benefit of Marvel Mystery Oil is adding it to your gasoline at the rate of about 4 ounces per 10 gallons. About 2006 or so they started taking the sulfur out of gasoline. Sulphur was what provided the lubricant for the fuel system and the injectors. In order to replace this lubricant the Marvel Mystery Oil actually works quite well bad actually keeps the injectors cleaner than the sulfur did. I forget how many General Motors products within a few years of taking the sulfur out of the gasoline no longer had a functional gas gauge because the sending unit was worn out from lack of lubrication, not to mention what it did to the fuel pump that by then is in the fuel tank. Do not discount Marvel Mystery Oil oh, I know it has a funky name, but it works better than any other single product that I know. As for Lucas, it thickens your oil far above what the engine is designed for, and it is also been linked to hardening of the seals in the engine and causing leaks. Use it for lubricating your hinges on your doors but keep it out of the engine.

Now about a week before I do an oil change Ill add a pint of MMO and drive it roughtly 200 miles. I call this my MMO engine flush. Now sometimes I do forget to add this to my gas and I do see my mpg go down abit. But on any given week and driving habit Ill see anywhere from 26-28mpg with MMO. I am a Bitoger and we unerstand that Varnished engines are better helped with the use of synthetic engine oils of the ester type (partial PAO partial Ester) in its base oils. Esters are more polar and solvent, so it attaches to the varnished parts and lift the insolubles out, just like a detergent additive would for detaching, with the advantage of dissolvation and dispersancy, with long term action to remove the deposits slowly to cause not clogging. As a result, at the end of the oil change interval, the oil start to get a hint of the color of the varnish. If the varnish is red, the oil will get a reddish tint, from the dissolving varnish.

From looking at the inside of your engine, it needs some serious cleaning. I switched my 2003 Honda Civic to Royal Purple oil and ATF fluid after 158k miles. The Frantz filter removes the oil's purple color in 15 minutes, turning to gold color. The first oil became dark quickly, so after 4000 miles I changed the Frantz Bypass Filter (Scott 1000 sheet single ply TP) and continued to run the same oil. However the oil was clean but remained dark colored from cleaning out the residue built up over the years. After 10,000 miles I sent a sample of the RP oil to be analyzed. It came back good to keep using for another 8000 miles with a TBN of 5.1. Even though it looked dark, contaminants were only 11 ppm vs 7 ppm for new virgin oil. I ran MMO for 1000 miles before changing the oil and both filters. The engine is like new inside with only a slight bronze tint to the surfaces. it was well maintained for the first 158k using regular oil changed every 3000 miles. The highway mpg increased from 32mpg to 42mpg. My son switched to Royal Purple oil and ATF in his Honda after using Amsoil for years. He also had a 10mpg increase. Same for my 2004 1700cc motorcycle that has nearly 40,000 miles. The first 35,000 were on Amsoil MC oil. The inside is bright and clean after the first use of Royal Purple and running MMO for 200 miles before changing oil. Royal Purple is incredible oil, even compared to Amsoil which I won't be buying again. Marvel Mystery Oil is also incredible stuff which I now buy by the gallon.

Great Product, I've used it since 1975, substituting one quart oil with MMO in gasoline and diesel engines oil changes. In Diesel I ran it in the fuel as well and never had injector related issues friends had. But where it really shined was in my F250 Super Duty, Ford had a class action law suit filed against them because the 5.4L triton engines would rap a couple of times on cold days when initially started because of a design flaw in the length of the piston skirts. My Super Duty Never experienced this until one oil change that my local Autozone was out of MMO and I only had synthetic 5W30 in the crank case. Because MMO is like a light machine oil, it thins your motor oils viscosity and when cold your oil system pressure rises faster and your engine is less oil starved at startup. I have not missed putting MMO in my oil since, even in my C7.

Kerosene as an engine flush !?? The stupid never stops !! Kerosene belongs in a lantern, NOT in an engine.

@@SlikLizrd Wow. Another 4 Subscriber, ZERO content Troll. Most "Engine Flush" products are mostly kerosene. Shops have used kerosene for decades. @@HUBBABUBBADOOPYDOOP Thank you very much -- for proving my point. Although many of these "Engine Flush" products CONTAIN SOME kerosene, kerosene is NOT the primary ingredient in Marvel Mystery Oil -- as was shown by your so-called "Creators". Perhaps you should stay in your lane to avoid being run over. ;>)

@@SlikLizrd A "Creator" here on RU-vid, is a designation of a person who has produced, uploaded and published a video. Never having performed that before- I can see why you'd struggle with that concept, and make some fun. Not once in my first statement here- write that I believe MMO contains a fraction of kerosene. I don't know how you derived that. Please show us where? Show or STFU. No, you're correct- I don't drive on the shoulder of RU-vid. That's for Folks who've broken down & having trouble, like you.

Think he hit on something, In the seventies I did transmission fluid in the oil like he said and if you read up on what MMO does you will probably find out that there is no difference in the two, They both have detergents and seal restoration abilities, we would substitute one quart of Trans fluid and run for 100 miles that would actually restore lifters that were notability Clicking with in that mileage frame

I cant wait to add some seafoam before my next oil change.. is there a chance of having too much volume of liquid if I add it though? Like if my car holds 7 quarts of oil and its full, is adding a can of seafoam too much? Would you recommend MMO over seafoam?

There is no similarity between transmission fluid and Mystery oil except that they both are red. Transmission oil is formulated on a base of 10-weight oil. Mystery oil is heavy naptha and turpentine with a some additive that basically are glorifed mothballs. Both will help flush an engine before an oil change but they are not whatsoever the same thing. My recent researches have determined that all solvent additive are just about the same thing - naptha and turpentine. You might as well use Mystery Oil for everything - engine oil and fuel sytem. It's as good as anything and a value for the price. You can get a quart at that big box store for less than $4.

From the 30's through the 60's there were MMO adders sold for cars. On an old car sometimes you'll see one, usually mounted to the firewall, they had a vacuum line to bleed it slowly to lube the top end. I've seem a lot of them, they were about as popular as the old "Frantz" bypass oil filter from the days before full flow filters came on cars from the factory.

First off, i dont know if it or any additive really does its job. One thing you have repeated and rings true over your videos is "Propper maintainance", that is the best advice any car owner needs, its 100% true and logical. That marvel product ive never seen before, but it makes me worry about there instant milk powder ha ha :-D, does it make your tea/coffee wash off the cups easyer :)

excellent video. I like the level of background/historical information on the product. MMO seems to be a good choice for additives, I think people overuse many additives. I saw some people comment on seafoam, that product is made for 2 stroke engines.

I could tell you have been around for long time to know some things in the past and how times and things have changed. Younger people mostly don't know these things because of not working on things. Hands on. You know. Cars like you said if they have 100,000 k the was a good life for the car. Now cars are made much better and last longer. And the quality of Oil's filters have improved over the years etc.

Well I put MMO in my truck about a month ago, 159k miles on my 98 f150 and It stopped my slow oil leak, I would have about 1/4 of my oil missing every full tank I go through so every full tank I would add oil. It stopped the leak it has been only a month but its been through a couple of gas tanks full and the oil level is still topped off. I added just a little bit of MMO not much but I only added it once and it seems to be doing well!

Robert good video. On my older vehicles I drain my oil and fill up my engine with ATF plus new oil filter and idle for 15-20 minutes the drain. Fill up with engine oil with another filter and add half a quart into engine to build up oil while driving. 4- 5 quarts of engine oil with half quart of ATF. I learned this years ago from Auto Technician.
