I was still in the craddle and REMEMBER hearing this song on my moms transistor radio in '68.

I remember being mad at Marvin for dropping this song a couple of weeks after Gladys Knight and the Pips version was already heading for #1 till Marvin came and knocked it out the park. As a kid and a dancer I refuse to like Marvin’s version. Hmmm it lasted a about a couple of months before I came around and forgave him. 😂😂😂🤣🤣😭😭❤️😍

Started listening to Motown at 12, now It's 60 years later, still can't get enough !

Damn. His voice, the instrumentals, the background singers. Took me back to 1968...I was 4 years old.

To me these musician's were the best. Pop music was invented by them.

I love this extended version. It's great, especially the placement of the girls voices. The girls act as "Grapevine". Right from the start they wisper, spread the news, their voices sneer. Later when the cockold gets his part, they keep in the background, show pity and tell it on. Finally they sing in standard rhyme, put the story aside that has happend a million times before, and that will happen millions of times again. Among these millions, Marvin Gaye told his one as one of the best ever.

Modern day Mozart,Debussey.....orchestrations,tempo,lyrics,harmonies...the total package. I never noticed how much the violins had to play in this little epic. The Detroit Symphony is on point and really selling the mood. Thanks for this tutorial...as a 13 year old kid from Detroit,,,we never truly "listened" to the mastery of all the many elements of this old chestnut. Thank you....Motown was truly ahead of its' time...KUDOS!!

The Funk Brothers were awesome. The only Band that was as funky would be The James Brown, 16 piece orchestra in its heydays. James Brown played the organ too. Very well.
