So many artists have given us wonderfully slow, melodic versions of this old Dylan standard. Mary brings a refreshing version that's like a march, a vigorous affirmation of the great and mighty nature.

I reposted this spirited version by Mary Black for an online eulogy just after someone passed from a valiant struggle with cancer. last spring. Days before she passed, my wasted physically but mentally tough sister said, "I'm still going to beat this!" My first thought was , "Time to lay down your weary tune, Jeanette." The Byrds' classic folk-rock version was in my head. Dylan's, of course, is his cult favorite, but this one by Black celebrates the life that lived in its vibrant tone.

I like this cover. Mary gives it a bit of gospel twist. I like how she made it lively.

I am a Mary Black fan and marvel at her great talent. However, disappointed in this cover. I think Mary rushed through it; not the best vocal song for her and just don't care for the band's arrangement either. I don't think in this case Mary did this song justice compared to how well she normally does when covering a song..

I completely agree. It's an emotional song with an authentic poem as text. But Dylan's version is prettiest than Mary's one. It's slower and more solemn.

Not a very good rendition... in particular missing this verse: I looked down on the river then and saw a TREE struck down, that once had grown in some great wood, Now the sea would be its home... Lay down your... etc. C'mon man.

WONDERFUL! Has great depth of feeling that's hard to do. This is not an easy song. Best I've heard.

this music has it's roots in ancient Europe. it's like Dylan's other works such as "1 More Cup of Coffee". I think maybe Bob has somewhere in his archives mountains of material like this he has never divulged. this group did a great job with this song. The barefooted man with the mandolin added enormously2the overall effect with his solo. and of course Mary had all under control with her masterful quality of voice&demeanor. The piano man did good2. the only weak thing was the audience.

One of the most moving renditions of this song. Quite apart from her voice, her crystal-clear enunciation makes the words clear and intelligible. I don't know who the pianist is, but he does that verse on the studio recording as well.

The "post Tim O'brien' versions of this song are like the "post hendrix" versions of all along the watchtower -- Dylan+

Excellent as usual from Mary and band! But I didn't know Pat had such a great voice! His piano and accordian playing has always shown pure genius.

Agree with Dusty Turtle. This is a lovely interpretation of one of Dylan's most lyrical songs. But the best version is Sean Keane's.

Beautiful rendition of what is perhaps the prettiest Dylan song.
