Philippe Gregory’s books and HBO’s “The Tudors” series are much more intriguing than “The Other Boleyn Girl”, as they allowed for much more character development and detail. I could be mistaken but I do believe that Philippe Gregory participated in the creation of “The Tudors” series.

I read The Other Boleyn Girl in early 2008 and it became one of my favorites. Unfortunately, the film left out so much of Mary’s story. If you’re interested in this history then read the book. It’s far better than anything else out there about the Boleyns and the Tudor Court.

I think the original artwork’s portrayal of Mary’s beauty was enhanced, like most portraits at the time ( and nearly every portrait before and since when painted or photographed). The artists want to please the buyer and want to continue to work. It would be interesting if the AI didn’t add current standards of beauty and current trends in makeup. I notice the AI changes the eyes quite drastically. Maybe have it stay more true to form of the original portraits. Could you make that kind of AI image so we can see what they actually people actually looked like during that time? Thanks. These portraits are really fun and I enjoy your channel.

Hi, Thank you for your comments and for liking the video. We would definitely be keen to create Tudor photos from portraits using different AI models and preferences. We tried it with two Elizabeth Woodville portraits that looked very different, in an earlier video, but AI has since improved further. On Mary, it is far more difficult to create authentic pictures for the Tudors (as we have tried placing different levels of make-up or even removing makeup with AI, and have not got to a model which everyone agrees with). The interesting age for comparison will be the late 19th century to the Early 20th century (Late Georgian and Early Victorian) when photography was just invented and everybody still own painted portraits, either because Photography was still too new and primitive or because of "photoshop" effects, we do get to see a lot of differences between photos and portraits. We also hope to do more comparisons for those era for everyone to explore and evaluate. Thanks again.

I agree. The AI's use of modern beauty standards exaggerated features to a point that made them highly unlikely to resemble the actual people, particularly the women. The mouths and lips were made easily 3 or 4 times fuller than the original portraits. Granted, the beauty standard back then was to portray mouths smaller than likely realistic, so the truth would probably be somewhere between the original paintings and the modern AI.

Mary is my direct ancestress too. But as for the visual depiction of her for this video, unlike her sister, Mary was described to have had blonde hair and blue eyes. She considered to have had the standard look that was considered beautiful back then. That's why she was considered the more beautiful of the two sister with Anne being considered to be quite plain.

Very interesting! We followed the Portrait that was deemed to be her, but as we have included, there were no known or confirmed contemporary portrat. When we have a chance or working on further Boleyn stories, we will definitely try out the blond hair and blue eyes version. We do fully agree with you, and historical texts and rumors, that Mary was definitely the more beautiful of the sisters!

This is very true! If we think about Anne of Cleves, they seem to have both saved themselves, despite not been fully understood by the people after them. They were the closest to Henry VIII, and understood the risks they face, and what they had to do to escape him.

1] Mary Boleyn was also the ancestress of Princess Diana, a line that was carried by her son, Henry Carey. I heard recently that Prince William's wife, Princess Catherine, is also a Boleyn descendant, but the person didn't specify which branch of the family she comes from. I love stories like this, how one person or family, who the powers that be try to demean, smear, and wipe from history, ends up with the last laugh. Anyone from Henry's court that hated the Boleyns, including Henry, himself, is probably turning over in their graves right now, seeing how the blood of their shared enemy is still on the British throne. And 2] With time, most historians I've looked into now believe that, if Mary had a child with Henry at all, it was more likely to have been Catherine. Her gender, alone, would explain why the king didn't acknowledge her as his, given his legendary desperation for a son. Those same historians have said that Mary most likely had flame-red hair, while Anne's hair was dark auburn. (10/25/2023)

All the Royals are extended relatives of one another. Even Ralph Fiennes the actor is 12th cousin with the royal family. You would be surprised who is related to who as 4th , 5th, 6th, 10th, etc.. cousins.

If we look at the extended families of all the Royals and top nobility today, they will be connected when you start looking beyond 4th or 5th cousins and definitely within 10th cousins. If we agree with the migration theory, we are all interrelated to the original seven humans.

I am a descendant of Mary Boleyn thru her son Henry Carey he served his 1st Cousin Queen Elizabeth I all his life. I am also a double or tripple cousin many times removed from Henry VIII and his siblings. I recently discovered that 3 of Jacquetta of Luxembourg's daughters, were my ancestors, as well as Edward IV thru his son Aurthur Plantagenet, and George Duke of Clarence thru his daughter Margaret de la Pole who was executed by Henry VIII at age 69. Arthur Plantagenet was also a prisoner of Henry VIII who also killed my ancestor the 3rd Duke of Buckingham. Arthur Plantagenet died when he found out he was being released. 3 of Henry's wives, Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, and Anne of Cleves were my aunts many times removed. And Thomas Howard 2nd duke of I can't remember was about a 17th great grandfather he defeated the scots at Flodden.

Interesting, they were quite inter-connected. It sounds like that you are more connected to the Plantagenets, which means you probably do not like the House of Tudor too much. Except that they were also all descendant of Elizabeth of York, a Plantagenet as well.

Enchanted and beautiful AI imagery! I find Anne and Mary both striking. I do feel and think Mary had the blonde coloring which Henry had more than one blonde mistress. Annes personality what defined her wit and strength about her she also knew how to work her charms. I also wondered how AI would use Tudor or dated beauty standards vs modern standards. Now that would be intriguing to make historical figure come alive more portraying the era in which they lived. I can not wait for the next video :)

Mary Boleyn is my 12X Great Grandmother through Catherine Cary, and Queen Elizabeth II is my 10th cousin twice removed through the Bowes-Lyon line. The resemblance between my Mother and Queen Elizabeth II, and my Grandmother and Elizabeth The Queen Mother is uncanny!

It is amazing to us nowadays how young these ladies were , some only fifteen or eighteen, rubbing shoulders and consorting with people of huge political power. It is often overlooked how fragile life was during this period. Many women died during childbirth and many children were lucky to reach six years old because of disease . If one reached forty years old good fortune smiled on you.

We actually don't know the birth order of the Boleyn children but I've always believed that Mary was older than Anne. Philippa Gregory (among a couple historians) think that Mary was younger

Many historians believe Mary Boleyn went back to England with Princess Mary Tudor, dowager queen of France and believe it was actually Anne who was Francis's mistress. However, it may have not been true at all. Since the story came from a catholic priest who hated the Boleyn's because Henry dissolved his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and broke with the Catholic church in order to marry Anne

@@MeetingHistoryTimelines You should not present it as fact when no one knows. Poor Mary was given a reputation as loose morals when she was really a pawn in power play. Plus originally the priest said that of Anne, not Mary which somehow got changed to protect Anne's reputation. Alison Weir wrote extensively on this. she said the priest said Ane which somehow got changed to Mary but there is no idea if Anne was his mistress of not as Anne had made enemies of any staunch catholic. especially priests with her reformed religion and Henry breaking from the catholic church.

Both Boleyn sisters were at the French court, serving the French queen. The French king, Francis I, was a womanizer who slept with any woman who would go along with it, and Mary had a short affair with him. He referred to her as 'My Hack'. Not very complimentary. Returning to England, she had a short lived affair with Henry VIII. It has never been confirmed any of her children were due to Henry. He claimed only his son by Bessie Blount.

We fully agree, most people makes guesses about Catherine Carey been Henry VIII's daughter, including us. But it was interesting that she bore Henry Carey, but instead of the honors showered upon the baby like Henry Fitzroy, Henry VIII simply terminated their affair, probably out of spite and jealousy. Which means Henry Carey was not his son...the only other question is why William Carey died so soon after, due to illness/or something else...

Just a note, Kings were expected to have mistresses. Often the husbands of them were well compensated for their sacrifice and so affairs as such were not that secret. Not really.

At least their father did try to educate them well, like sending Anne to Netherland and getting Mary a job with Princess Mary Tudor while getting the ambassadorship to France. Ok, having watched this full video, some corrections need to be made. 1. Both Mary and Katherine of Aragon were described to have blonde (or fair) hair and blue eyes. 2. Mary wasnt really considered or called a "favourite mistress of Francis I. She never even held the title of maitresse-en-titre (The Official Mistress of the French King.) In fact, her sexual relationships in general were said to be overly exagerated. 3. Mary didnt marry William Carey by coincidence. It was arranged by her father and was considered a good match since William was both a favourite and a cousin of Henry VIII. 4. We dont know for sure if Henry fathered one, both or neither of Mary's children. It's possible but cant be said for certain, especially when he claimed neither. 5. Anne only took wardship and paid for the education of Henry Carey, not Catherine Carey. 6. Mary did live in poverty during and after her second marriage but died a wealthy woman, having outlived both parents and siblings. After the death of Thomas Boleyn, Mary inherited his entire estate.

That is true, and very different to when he acknowledge Henry Fitzroy, could it be tthat Mary was already married to his cousin, while Elizabeth Blount was single 5. That is correct too! Both supported Elizabeth though! 6. She did get some land, but it was said that Henry VIII sold Hever castle and only granted some of the proceeds to her out of pity. So her wealth and windfall may be limited. It is also interesting that none of the children from her second marriage was ever talked about again.

I said that because the narrator said that Mary became a favourite mistress of his and i dont think that's even a little true. 4. Henry VIII claimed Henry FitzRoy as proof that he could father a son and make it seem that Katherine's failure to give him one was only her fault. Obviously back tjey didnt realise that the gender of a baby was determined by the man. Furthermore, it was common practice for a King to prefer affairs with married women, so if the womam did become pregnant, it was expected for the husband to claim the child/children and was often rewarded handsomely for it. I personally feel that Catherine Carey is the most likely candidate for being fathered by Henry although it was also said later on that Henry Carey was said to look A LOT like Henry VIII, at the court of Elizabeth I. 5. Yes, whether half-siblings or not, they were definitely cousins from their mothers being sisters and Elizabeth treated them well enough. Catherine was even Elizabeth's lady of the bedchamber (a very high position for a lady-in-waiting). I also think she valued them a lot because they were pretty much the only immediate family she had left. 6. Mary had at least 2 children from her second marriage but it's assumed that those 2 died in either infancy or during childhood because there's really no record of them beyond a certain point.

King Francis I (François 1er) was dashing indeed ! Have a look at his portrait by François Clouet. He was nearly two metres tall, young, athletic, charming, elegant, well-spoken and well-educated. His long nose even added to his charisma. A perfect Renaissance prince (inspired by the Italian Renaissance) and one of our favourite kings although he was not perfect.
