Hi friends, welcome back to Songs From Home...
It’s a chilly but gorgeous autumn day here in Virginia, and with it comes the first scent of woodsmoke, leaves falling, the arrival of a different kind of light and cold mornings. These are gifts, given how much I love fall. And Shanah Tovah to all who are observing Rosh Hashanah on this beautiful weekend.
It’s time for another song off of the new album - “Where The Beauty Is” was inspired by a gallery show I attended of the late artist Margaret Kilgallen, and it spoke to me with its wisdom and insight into the artist's method and practice.
Kilgallen believed that “beauty can be found in the humblest of places”… She said: “ I like to see people’s hand in the world…my hand will always be imperfect because it’s human. And I think it’s the part that’s off that’s interesting…”
The crooked line beneath the paint
From faraway it looks straight
Where practiced hands betray a shake
That’s where the beauty is
The news that Ruth Bader Ginsburg had passed on Friday evening left me stricken; we can honor her remarkable life by remembering that the pursuit of justice and equality is not just an inscription on a frieze or a statue but a daily mission, a call to action…and there is still beauty to be found in the world, and in one another.
Until the next time, stay well, stay strong, wear your mask, carry on and #staymighty !
