"I'll be the calm, I will be quiet. Stripped to the bone I wait." My favorite character from The Tudors.
Song: Thousand Eyes by Of Monsters and Men
Show: The Tudors
EDIT: I will just explain the music choice here. I used this song because the loudness that grows towards the end, in my mind, symbolizes Mary’s mental state. It’s meant to be unsettling. It’s also meant to be Mary transitioning from being 'thrown into the storm' to 'becoming the storm'. The lyrics were the reason for the choice.
Also, something interesting about Mary's portrayal in The Tudors that I tried to show in this video was her relationship with Chapoys. This was the only man who shows her constant kindness in her weakest moments. In a way he is her true father. Having him, a staunch catholic, as a father figure no doubt impacted Mary, in the show at least. If an authority figure that she respects has certain beliefs, it's quite easy to understand why Mary shares his convictions.

So I'm getting tired of responding to all the "Mary was not the first queen of England" comments. Yes, she was the first regnant queen. Here's why: 1. Matilda was never crowned, she was never officially queen of England. (Even if she should have been) 2. Lady Jane was "queen" for 9 days before getting her head chopped off. She is known as "Lady" Jane for a reason. She was nothing more than a puppet. 3. Also, just google it people. Peace.

At what point in time did England no longer have an interregnum when the king dies? That's not how it has worked in a long while. When a monarch dies, the thrown immediately descends on his/her heir. No coronation is required. The fact that Henry I had sworn oaths from the barons (including Stephen) to accept Matilda as his successor made her his legal and immediate successor when he died.

@Shane-Flanagan 3 года назад
@@SG-pu3rx You can't assume I got all my info from school textbooks. Of course Mary's upbringing affected her, how could it not even if sources are scarce. She suffered poor health alot as a child. Her mother Catherine always wanted to tend to her but Henry often forbade it which caused both alot of heartache. Also signing that document declaring her parents marriage as unlawful must have haunted her for years until she reversed it when she became Queen She faced so many road blocks and trauma. In the early part of her reign, she came across as good and sympathetic but all too suddenly changed. Burning so many people didn't help her image and her phantom pregnancy made her look like an embarrassment. Mary is rarely portrayed in a positive and fair way in history as well as in books and documentaries. Of course Elizabeth had a temper, hardly surprising given how notorious both her parents were for there volitile personalities. I believe she was more level headed, shrewd and more suited to the role of Queen than Mary.

It was a very touching portrayal of Mary. She's usually dismissed as a failure, a tragic figure, or a cruel tyrant. The real Mary was probably much more complex than that, and here we see her human side. Her policies had the potential for success, but her reign was short because of her early death, and marred by crop failures, rains, and epidemics. Much of her later character was probably shaped by her experiences during her adolescence and her treatment by her father.

For all it's flaws, The Tudors is pretty much the first show to explore why exactly Mary did the things she did, and I think it's important that we remember that nothing happens in a vacuum. Was what she did right? She genuinely believed it was. The reason you burn heretics, first and foremost, is to burn away their sin; Mary would have truly believed that she was saving their souls. Even if from a modern perspective we reject that entirely, it is important we remember that you cannot judge historical figures by today's standards.

Sarah brought so much humanity to Mary in her early portrayal and did a wonderful job showing that peek into the "Bloody" Mary that will come to power in the future. I just wanted to cuddle her through the whole show, she deserved so much better. If they ever do a film about Mary I, Sarah has to return to the role. No one else can do it. In Marys eyes Anne Boleyn took the Queen title away from her mother and was to blame for her not seeing her mother all the way to hers mothers death and was the cause and effect to the bad things that happened to Mary and her mother. But we all know in reality No one is to blame but Henry, he was the real cause and effect, by him treating Catherine and Anna Boleyn terrible when they couldnt conceived and/or give him a surviving son and how he neglected all of his children, we see how to affected them because of his behaviors towards their mothers and to them. And by his children not producing any heirs leaving the Tudor bloodline to dry up and die he deserved that, the curse that was put on the tudors by I think his grandmother on his mothers side did what it was supposed to do. Educated she might have been, but she ruled with her heard not her head. That's why Elizabeth is remembered as the better queen. In a time were women were despised and thought to be inferior to men, a woman in power could not be sentimental. Mary put her love life above the wishes of her people, she married an spanish prince, the heir to the Spanish throne, meaning that England and Spain would be united after they had children, a very unpopular idea. She also loved her husband a lot more than he her. She did foolish things to earn his love, like sending him many of her men for a foolish French invasion, which led the English to lose their last stronghold in France. Elizabeth on the other hand didn't let her heart rule over her head. Most people agree she was in love with Robert and he wanted to marry her, but knowing that the marriage would be an unpopular one, and that upon marriage a woman was expected to yield to her husband, she chose to stay a "virgin". That's what differences the two Marys from her, making her the true and only Gloriana

@@AnzuBrief I’m sorry but Mary was a great queen. She wasn’t foolish or ‘too sentimental’. It’s quite sad that as a woman you bash another in such a way. Mary was true to who she was and what she identified with. She did what she simply believed in, no games or manipulation. She believed Spain would help her make England Catholic again, hence why she helped them so much - not purely out of love sweetie. Mary never once put her love-life first. Everything she did was to make England what she thought would be The Best. She made choices that weren’t popular because she wanted to change England, which doesn’t make her foolish, it makes her revolutionary. I don’t agree with her beliefs but I respect that she did and stood for exactly what she believed in. Whereas Elizabeth played games, manipulated, and lied. No one truly knew what Elizabeth stood for, while everyone knew what Mary wanted - a Catholic England cause that would be ideal. Plus, you do realize Mary was raised with the belief that Spanish was the second best kingdom due to her mother being a Spanish princess, so it only makes sense why she went to them for support and help. That’s not foolishness, actually it’s brilliant. She knew how strong Spain was and knew if there was any chance to change England to the way she wanted, she had to make strong ties to them.
@AnzuBrief
@AnzuBrief 3 года назад
@@zoecoates9879 We differ. I believe it was foolishness. Just like Mary of Scotts. But if you believe the opposite, good for you. Just keep in mind, Spain WAS the best/most powerful kingdom at the time. Not even France, which was a close second, could rival Spain. Charles didn't just rule over Spain, he was Emperor of the Sacro Roman Empire. Still, Philip did not love his wife, while his wife loved him desperately. That gave him power over her, which was a terrible crucial mistake. Just like her aunt Juana La Loca. Mary listened to her husband instead of listening to her advisers and her people, and that was not wise. Especially when she lost Calais before of it. You say that Elizabeth didn't stand for anything, and it might be true. But what do we remember her for? Good literature? The beginning of England's rule over the seas? The expansion of England over the Americas? Her use of pirates to steal money from Spanish ships? Elizabeth was aware she lived in a men world and she played them all, not allowing her heart to interfere with her ambition/survival instincts. The 2 Marys cannot say the same. But the time the next Queen inherited the throne, though, things had changed enough that Victoria could afford to be more feminine, and lead a more traditional female life without losing power as a result.

Catherine of Aragon was my favourite wife of Henry VIII. All were brilliant in their own right, but she was her own force to be reckoned with. She could have chosen to step aside and live comfortably like Anne of Cleves did, but Catherine fought for the sake of her daughter and her beliefs. Henry didn't deserve either of his wives. He hated women who challenged him, even if that is what attracted him to them in the first place. So he got rid of Catherine and Anne Boleyn precisely because they could challenge him. He almost got away with arresting Catherine Parr, but she survived by begging for forgiveness. Jane Seymour was the only wife who did not live long enough to anger him. Pity that he died craving for a son when his greatest legacy was Elizabeth I, his daughter.
@Shane-Flanagan
@Shane-Flanagan 3 года назад
I agree with you that Catherine of Aragon was a great woman and Queen but the main reason Henry got rid of Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn was because both failed to produce a living male heir. Henry didn't die craving a male heir because he had a male in Edward who was produced by Jane. Also it wasn't Henry who tried to have Catherine Parr. It was nobles and men of the counsel such as Stephen Gardener. It was actually Henry who stopped her getting arrested as he was old, sick and tired and didn't want the hassle.

Mary Tudor was the first Queen of England because she was the first woman who actually RULED England. Just being called Queen doesn't make one thus. And that's what Jane Grey and Matilda were - Queens in name only. Although, Matilda was actually only declared 'Lady of the English.' But she never ruled England. Even at her highest point in the English civil war Matilda only controlled half of the country - the western portion and down to Cornwall I believe. Jane Grey may have been declared Queen of England (I believe by her father) but she never even came close to actually ruling it. She spent those nine days effectively on house arrest in London until Mary rode into the capital with her army and seized her birth right by force.

There is a book I read called the Spanish Tudor. She is a fascinating historical person who, if she would have been supported, could have been a great queen. As it was she was constantly having to defend her right to rule along with doing what she believed was her duty to restore England to the Catholic church. However she is no more bloody than any other monarch of that time including her famous grandparents Ferdinand and Isabel and her own father. She was the first woman to successfully be crowned Queen regnant of England and held onto her crown for 5 years. I wish we learned more about her in school beyond the bloody part. If Henry did not obsess over a son everything would so much better for everyone. He would never annul his marriage to Queen Catherine of Aragon and they would raise Princess Mary in a mentally stable environment to become the monarch. When she sat on the throne she would be ready to rule wonderfully and be remembered as a great queen today. And it is not just that. Since Henry declared Mary a bastard without her power and title nobody wanted to marry her and Henry also did not allow to marry her for love. In this narrative since she would not be declared a bastard she would get married earlier and could have an heir. So if Henry just did not obsess over a son and raised his daughter with his lovely wife Mary would be a great ruler AND the Tudor dynasty would continue. Lesson to be learned: Henry is an asshole.

The actresses that play Mary and Anne Boleyn look more like mother and daughter not step family

I know she did terrible things, but I can’t help but feel bad for the way she grew up, anybody would act out having Henry as a father

Yes Mary was affected by her chaotic upbringing and by the separation and mistreatment of her mother. Mary just wanted to be loved and accepted. She was also affected by her father's break with Rome and her parents marriage being declared invalid meaning Mary was illegitimate. That would break anyone's heart. Mary knew her worth and birthright. I'm glad she got to be Queen, it's just sad the way everything went so wrong and the way she is unfairly remembered.

メアリー・チューダー | イングランドの初代女王 「私は平静で、静かにします。骨の髄まで脱ぎ捨てて、私は待ちます。」 チューダー家の一番好きなキャラクター。 曲: Thousand Eyes by Of Monsters and Men

If she had lived longer she would probably be the greatest queen that England had It's a shame that Elizabeth and her supporters did so many bad advertisements about her and the yorkers

Could you imagine having parents like that. Or have them treat you like that. Or imagine treating your kids like they don’t exist. I am so glad I was born into a culture that raises you on family values. I think most people forget families all we got in this world. Everything else is materialistic.
