I see my Mom every time I hear this ! Thankfully she is still here in 2023 and when I do hear this I call her and tell her how much I love her and how much I appreciated her struggles in the 70’s after the divorce. Like this show, back then it was a lot like that for my mom even though in the show Marry was single. She had to make it on her own without a husband and she did it all very well. Many of the stories written for the show could be applied to real life struggles back then and it was easy to relate to it. I suppose that is a large reason the show lasted so long and is still liked today. I believe we grew up in the last best decades in America as today I do not recognize our country. I want to go back and do it all over ....The 70’s and 80’s were my decades and they were the best years of my life. America was absolutely a different place back then. It was still a treat then to get 30 cents from mom and walk uptown to the gas station to get a Coca-Cola or Pepsi or to the ice cream shop and get a CMP ice cream. We truly did not lock our doors and stayed out till after dark with our bikes and on Halloween we all went trick-or-treating without our parents at night in the cold and it was great fun.. In the summer we played outside all day and all night, The only way my mom got us home to eat was a big brass bell she had outside the sliding glass doors that she would ring to get out attention to come home for dinner. I remember wonderful 4th of July celebrations when mom took us to the ball park and we laid on blankets to watch the fireworks. And of course Christmas and even though it was tuff for my mom raising us she always made sure we had a great holiday . Even Easter was special in America back then... as we get older we started to go see the movies and we really did have the best movies. ( Jaws, Close Encounters, , Raiders of the lost Ark, James bond, Star Wars, Star Trek, Aliens, Predator, planet of the apes, E.T, The terminator, The goonies, Friday the 13th, Batman, Back to the future . ...To name a few.....The TV show line up on the networks were fabulous ( this was before you got 500 channels like you do today and still nothing on is good) we had Dallas, knots Landing, Falcon crest. And every night of the week a network would compete and have for example, Monday night at the movies! Tuesday night at the movies ! and they would show a major movie release. we had real holidays were we all got together and enjoyed each other’s company. We had great stores that are all but gone now in 2023 and great movie theaters and of course the MALLS! It was not the 80’s without a Mall. My very first few jobs were at the mall. First Macdonald’s and then The Gap!. Yes sir those days were GREAT! and I am very lucky to have lived them .... today I don’t even see kids outside and everyone is in fear for saftey from crazy people.... God Bless us all ! (If you can even say that anymore)
Excepting the invoking of Friday The 13th as a "good movie" (?) I appreciated everything you wrote. My grandmother experienced much difficulties and hardships rearing her family after her husband's early premature death too. She was a wonderful human being and my calendar @ Christmas Eve remains marked for late, great grandmother's birthday! She-and her story- are missed! 1:33
I remember watching this with my mom in the 70s. She was a single mom and this was her theme song, to not give up. People in general were more decent and considerate back then, I look at this clip with nostalgia.
@@Youngstown529 That's true but you gotta admit they were nowhere near as bad as they are now. Social media has made people into egotistical monsters. Facts.
The opening puts life in perspective. One minute you are starting out a new life. Meeting new friends and gaining new experiences. In a flash of an eye, its all gone. The entire cast has passed. Life on Earth is too short.
I was 5, but I watched MTM, Alice, Kojak and Baretta (spelling) with my late Auntie. Some of the few good memories from my childhood. I love you Aunt Diane!
I was 10 in 77 but didn't appreciate the show like I do now.i watch everyday, and like alot of people I fell in love with Mary and her friends. I like how they tweaked the song over the yrs. From a simple country song to a orchestra backed masterpiece.
My parents loved this show too. They had never been to Minneapolis, but after I moved here, and they visited, I took them to all the places in the opening,
Where is that little lake/pond where the ducks are? Is it still around? I have a conference in Minneapolis in October, you know I’m going to check it out.
@@ericacosat4531 Well, 32 likes for them, none for you. Translation: No one cares about your opinion. Wait a second! Erica's about to give herself a "Like." LMFAO 🤣!!!! 🤣!!!! 🤣!!!! 🤣!!!! 🤣!!!! 🤣!!!! 🤣!!!! Pathetic.
While I like Hawaii Five-0 and Kojak's better, I could agree with the MTM show being top 5. I like the piano a lot in this season's theme, especially the closing credits. Mary rocking HOFer Fran Tarkenton's #10 is a nice touch, also.
R.I.P. Gavin Macleod (1931-2021) Give Mary, Ted, Valerie, Cloris, and Georgia hugs for us! Edit: I now can't listen to the closing theme music without getting emotional.... now that the entire cast- including "Mimsie" The Cat at the end, are all gone. 😢
I feel so blessed to be a child of the 70's. All the great shows that were on, this being one of my favs. Just the theme music alone takes me back to such a happy time....good times indeed!😀 ( no pun intended) another great show from that era!
I don't know what it is about this theme song, that makes me feel good? Whether it's because of my younger years and all those fond memories, and all my loved ones were still here but whatever it is? I know that I never forget it!❤️😊
How good was MTM? It spawned three spin-offs: Rhoda, Phyllis, and Lou Grant. Each of its other actors also went on to hit shows of their own: John Amos on Good Times, Gavin MacLeod on Love Boat, Ted Knight on Too Close for Comfort, and Betty White on Golden Girls.
I recently got the complete series 📀📺 Now I'll be watching a few episodes in honor of Ed 🙏🏻 #Godspeed, sir, and hope the gang is there to welcome you home
Though this isn't my favorite of the openings (that would be the first season), this is the one that most sticks in my mind. I was 12 at the time and loved the show.
The first season opening and closing was my favorite, too. However, of all subsequent seasons, this is my next favorite. I love the contrast of horns and piano in this one.
The first season theme is too dreary....”How will you make it on your own/this world is awfully big/and girl this time you’re all alone”....the second one is perfect, and that’s why it’s more memorable. It’s breezy, cheerful and fits the tone of the show much better.
Today at 1:00 in the afternoon on decades network, they are going to be playing The Mary Tyler Moore Marathon. I'm so looking forward to this. even though this show is a lot older than I am, I still enjoy watching it. For an older show and way before my time it's great.
A few posts have been made about the current situation in Minneapolis compared to the city of Mary Richards. Mary Tyler Moore was generally a liberal Republican in her youth but was more liberal during the MTM Show days going as far as making an ad for the reelection of Jimmy Carter in 1980 (the ad is here on RU-vid). In her final days she became quite conservative, watching a lot of Fox according to her old co-star Ed Asner (who, as well known, was very Left). Whatever her politics, MTM is a legend.
i just heard of ed's death what a wonderful actor and great man RIP ED!!!!!!!!!!say hi to mary and valerie and chloris for us,too he is now on the eternal love boat of God's love in heaven say hi to ted and gavin too
I took many trips around Lake of the Isles 0:16-0:22 when I was renting a nearby studio apartment in the 90’s. Multimillion $$$ homes border the north and west sides of the lake. Pretty impressive to see their interiors lit up when taking a walk after dark.
So, how old do we think the crossing guard & other children are? It’s been roughly over over 45 years ago & the kids could be 10-ish then........so they could be 55-ish. Wait! I’m 56 now. Does that mean I’m old now? Perish the thought. Great theme & location shooting. It captured everything in over a minute and 30 seconds. Good memories.
The pastor who married my wife and I knew someone whose Mom was in the famous hat toss scene. He was in college then and I believe she’s since passed away.
I was a St. Paul crossing guard smelling and Shelby for Richard Gordon’s school 1974. Charles Schulz’s alma mater lol. We loved home girl mtm and the Viking who could never win the super bowl and hockey at miserable temperatures outside
This is actually the opening and closing for the episode which featured the first (and last) time Lou and Mary decided to date each other. It was aired today (9/5/2021) on MeTV in tribute to the passing of Ed Asner.
Ok I have been obsessed I mean obsessed with two things since I was 7 years old ( I'm 55 now) , this opening credits video and the woman at the very end of this video right underneath the name James and the name Allen. Its at the very end. She's wearing a blue scarf around her big hair, tan trench coat, white gloves and her purses around her left arm looking at Mary like she's crazy PLEASE HELP ME !!!!
I've always found the opening bars of the theme to be really interesting. It almost sounds like it shouldn't work with the rest of it, but it does. And I mean that stylistically speaking. It's dramatic, and it gets the attention of viewers. Perhaps that's why it was written the way it was. I've never heard it explained one way or another.
It's corny to say that anyone is a role model, but... When I was 10 thru 13 or so, I used to watch the MTM show each week and be inspired by things like... how, in the opening, she strode confidently along the lake (I wanted to look like that when I walked). And her character was always calm-but-offbeat in the face of her far-more-offbeat surroundings. I always got a great vibe from this show.
Grew up in the Twin Cities - so sad to see what has become of my hometown - destroyed by “community activists” and decades of one party rule! Too far gone to be saved, I’m afraid....😢 Love the shot of Mary washing her Mustang in the Tarkenton jersey......!!!
Some irony seeing Ted Knight and Gavin Macleod together. Knight didn't just make numerous appearances, on "The Love Boat". One episode, had him play a rival Captain, from another ship. Their crews got into athletic competition, against one another.
Its fun to listen to the definitive version here and then go back to the original pilot/S1 opening lyrics. It’s all “Maybe”s and “Might”s, really hedging their bets at first 🤣
@@Whocares17032 I wish it wasn't true but now all the original cast of the Mary Tyler Moore show and The Golden Girls have passed on RIP to all of those Legends of Television. Sadly I was reminded of the of actor who preceded Betty White in Death the late Ed Asner as I was watching Cobra Kai as Episode 1 ended with an Memorial to him as he played Johnny Lawrence stepfather Sid on the show...Crazy Right. He's 91 she was 99 both were working and going strong until the end. There is a party in heaven in right now and Betty White is Guest of Honor.
