Being a singer myself, I know how heartbreaking it is to lose your voice, especially when your life isn't working out. The voice is often the singer's only joy and comfort. Poor Mary couldn't even make a joyful noise toward the end. Well hopefully, God repaired her voice, and she sings for Him.
Please people give folks their Flowers while they are alive and can see appreciate them. Flowers meaning anything and everything beautiful, meaningful, of value. May Almighty God who created us all, this world and everything in it have mercy on us and save us from everything and everyone not like him. Amen.
MARY WELLS will always be the FIRST LADY of MOTOWN - without her, that record company might have NEVER been known- She is a greatly admired lady, mostly because she was one of the first artists to ever go on tour with the Beatles!
I loved Mary Wells, and I am so grateful that we still have her wonderful early hits to enjoy. She left Motown because she wanted to appeal to a broader audience, never imagining the success that would come to the company. Her battle with cancer was tragic and should be a lesson for smokers everywhere. It is wonderful that Berry Gordy, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Bruce Springsteen and others gave her money to live in dignity.
@Kenneth Hamlett: Mary was Motown's FIRST LADY! She was the headliner on the tours...I wish she would have trusted a budding black company...her songwriters (Smokey, HDH, etc) were putting out the hits. She got bad advice. Mr. Gordy offered her 50 percent of Motown stock...she refused !
She singed very well. I never would know of this. She died but, the Máry Wells'voice is alive today. Here in Brazil, everyone like her musics, specially Gigolo.
This was my generation's Teen Idol. I experienced her in person at the Regal and followed her post Motown days. Actually, Mary, to many of us in Chicago WAS the reason for Motown for the most part. We simply waited for her next "jam" because we knew that she would nail it everything. I mourned this woman's death and it's been about 22 years now. We did throw a Memorial of a sort with nothing but her music, just amongst family. RIP, much appreciation Mary for enriching us musically.
She left with good reason! Motown was notorious for cheating its artists out of their royalties. Teena Marie was cheated out of her money and artistic freedom and won the case. She even had legislation passed called the Teena Marie Law which prevents record companies from keeping anyone under contract without releasing new material from them.
@@AntonioJLee Mines as well along with Bye Bye Baby, I Don't Wanna Take a Chance, Two Lovers, My Guy, The One Who Really Loves You, Never, Never Leave Me and Gigolo.
To:Mary wells (rest in peace), I still bump your songs in my low rider cruising the streets of pasadena ca !!! your music lives through me and many others here in the Los Angeles area god bless your soul !!!your gone but never forgotten !!!!
when she talks with that voice, i just cant help but think of the happy time she once had. This breaks my heart... what is a singer without a voice. :(
I met this legend in nov, 81 in fresno ca at the rainbow ballroom .i was 19 years old she signed her autograph on the servin up soul album for me i was on cloud 9!!
This is so beautiful..I was born in 54..I love Mary. She put Motown on the map. Sad Gordy fell for Ross. That guy was cut throat..he did so many artist wrong. I listen to Mary music a lot..it brings back happy memories for me. I was young and just waiting to be a teenager to take a walk in the park..lol. Oakland Ca was a great city..it went bad when the Black Panthers popped up. Violence disrespect for the Police but thank God we had Pimps and Players..
Mary Wells' 3 oldest children did form a singing/Hip Hop group that was signed to MCA Records, but they were dropped due to the label's politics. Her oldest daughter is married to a famous chef and her sons are Hip Hop/R&B producers and songwriters. Her daughter Sugar has a child of her own and is honoring their mother's legacy.
Mary, Flo, David, Paul & Eddie, & All The Other Artists From Motown Who Got The Sh^tty End Of The Stick, Who Has Passed On, May You All Rest In Eternal Peace, Berry Gordy & Diane Ross Day Is Coming!!!!!
I loved her singing My Guy and all her many hits I wish you would have quit smoking two packs of cigarettes a day I never smoked and I'm 88 now and she would have been 79 she would have still been here God bless her😍😍😍😍
I was crazy about Mary wells that was my girl prating her songs to perfection never tiring and thank the rest of my stars for coming through thank so much bless you all
Love and miss you Mary....you were the best...wish I could of helped you after giving me so many years of that wonderful voice. I hope to visit your reesting place one day when I find out where you are.
Mary Wells entertained Scunthorpe in the UK...which got us all into Northern Soul and I love all she did...and will think of her every time they play "My Guy" at the odd 40th, 50th celebration.
mary ruggiero: Yea, but considering the fact that he didn't have to, nor was he at all obligated to give anything, the expression "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth" is aptly apparent. The fact is that others were giving her funds and, in that context, it's not how much a person is worth but, rather, how much they feel another may need. Your point of view is what is shameful if you really think about it.
@@lazurm hahahaha!! when a person is worth 345 MILLION DOLLARS, and he gives a $25,000 donation to someone he made million of those dollars on, he's cheap. no, hon, you putting a multi, multi, multi millionaire in the same category as the homeless, you should be ashamed!! what does the Bible say about giving? what is shameful is your lack of respect for my religion. i'm offended by your lack of intelligence, too.
I love her music and her attitude...I just look at the best things that have happened in my life and I tell Satan to get behind me, and ask God to get in front of me...
AWWW I MISS HER AND LOVE HER VOICE AND SONGS I CAN'T BELIEVE MOTOWN DID THIS TO HER THEY TOOK HER FOR GRANTED SHAME ON THEM FOR DOING THAT TO A BEAUTIFUL TALENTED LADY.
I agree ,she had the most beautiful voice ,and I loved her song (my guy) it can still make me cry after all these years of young love ,I miss those lovely moments of being in love !!
Norma Corella So let me Get this she Quit Motown smoking 2 packs of cigarettes married a deadbeat husband AND develop cancer and that was ALL Motown fault?; Go back to sleep 😪
jennifer23ish you agree?.Then your and idiot! Smoking 2packs of cigarettes a day quitting your job married a deadbeat husband AND develop cancer and that's your employer's fault? Take a nap 😪
How is it Motown's fault she smoked two packs a day? Her record sales went down after she left the company also. 20th Century Fox convinced her to break her contract, they were going to make her a movie star! She couldn't take her writers and producers with her. I love Mary Wells but this Motown bashing is ridiculous!
@@kenj280 The companies she went to didn't know how to develop artists like her...they didn't have R&B divisions...but she did make a fine post-Motown album! The songs were great!
OMG! I didn't know she died with a hole in her throat i knew she had cancer thats all omg im shocked this is so sad i just loved her voice and to not be able to talk or sing must have just killed her wow. She looks so beautiful here so young she doesnt look sick. God bless you Mary you are missed but your voice lives on XOX PEACE
Mary was a true icon love her songs the shady management at Motown should be ashamed of themselves leaving one of their big money makers homeless and broke.
Now This Story Is A Real Tear Jerker Because Mary Wells can really sing her heart out when it came to that top single My Guy which topped the charts & all but all of that cigarette smoking really cut her life short & she will always be remembered for her singing talent .
