It's one of my preferred rifles. The gas system is simple but a very effective design which achieves what other designs do with fewer parts. Indeed the only truly direct gas impingement system that I know. The AR-15 - as the author of the video says - is really an internal piston system. It's strange that no US vintage guns magazine has ever published a good article on the MA 49/56, maybe I missed and I'd love to be proven wrong.

It was still in service in French Navy support units in the early '00s. It was used in combination with the MAT 49 - the NCO with the SMG doing the self-protection of the two-person team, while the sailor with the _FSA_ was engaging target over 50 meters. It was a great rifle and I think if the remaining rifles has been upgraded to the MSE variant (pistol grip and larger magazine), it could have stayed in service way longer. Kolwézi battle in former Zaire was its swan song, and it was deemed obsolete for the Lebanon peace-keeping mission and replaced by the SIG-Manurhin SG540.

Nice shooting and video. I have an 03 FFL, have had about every SA rifle of that era, and the 49/56 may be my favorite. Extremely rugged and durable, accurate, light recoil, and 100% reliability for me. I hand-load M80 FMJ's with IMR 4895 to a measured velocity of 2550 fps. What a great rifle in any regard, and well worth seeing one out in the orig 7,5 caliber.

Hello, I did use the titanium firing pin only to find out it started breaking at the tip. It was actually piercing a tiny hole in the primer in which I did feel some gas blowing in my shooting eye. I have the spring type but like you if you find a short or make your firing pin shorter it will fix the problem. I still need to test magnum primers which are harder . I am still looking for load data for this cartidge. I use IMR 4895 and IMR 4064. I have the MSE front sight which are rare. It is a thinner front sight. The MSE rear sight has four apatures which is really rare. I am happy with mine. Thanks for the video

If you notice on the firing on the smaller target you can a actually see the path of the bullet via the disturbed air. Cool.

I leave the grenade launching butt sleeve on. Increases the length of pull, and softens recoil.

Great video! I have one in 308. And I have had no problems with mine! For the slam fire I got a spring firing pin. And for the pressure of the 308 I got a adj. gas bin, to replace the shoot off bin ( for the grenade gas shoot off). Not only is better for the action, but you don't have to go to the next county to get your brass!!! If they would have done this when they rechambered them into 308, you couldn't buy one for $1500!! Thanks for the video!!!

hi ! very good video about the MAS 49/56 , but I will like to add a comment ; I was in the french army for 2 years in western germany 1969, 1970 , the 49/56 was our standard rifle ; the plastic ammo you are using were used for training purpose with a special plug installed on the muzzle in order to get enough gas pressure to operate the action ; for grenade launching we were using an ammo made in brass with a crimped tip; the recoil was far more stronger than in your video , the way you fire it will take you on your back !!!! the grenade in this condition landed about 300 yards away .
@md10591
@md10591 3 года назад
one more detail the 49/56 was using 2 type of grenade , the one in your video is a sample from the " anti-tank " grenade with hollow charge the range was 70 yards , the other grenade was much slimmer and call " anti-personal " the range was 300 yards .

They are great rifles. My only gripe at all is the safety- if it was just a bit more simple to use (its effective- just not very efficient) I would stack it up with any other full-caliber battle rifle of the era.

I like the rifle, but hate the cartridge. 7.62N is where its at. Too bad 99 percent of the conversions are crap. Still a great rifle.

Great video and quite complete. I loved the FSA and was trained on it during the beginning of the 80's. One thing wrong is the grenade launching cartridge, they were metallic without bullet (simply crimped at the end). The plastic one are the regular training cartridge (requiring a special gas reducer at the barrel output). Sadly, it's almost impossible to find and buy one in France at a reasonable price, most of them were exported while the FAMAS replaced it...

@duanesarjec6887
@duanesarjec6887 2 года назад

I only wish that my unmolested 49/56 in 7.5 could cycle through a magazine. Must have gotten a bad one as most rounds get jammed at the feed ramp. Thanks for the video G&S

to shoot a grenade is realy easy and accurate this a good light mortar every body put his grenade less 4 yards until 440 yard in my platoon, to shot 5/ 5 an helm until 200 m is easy , even if you shoot less 50 cartridges I didnt like the rifles before to go int the army , but the Mas 49 liked me a lot , Dont forget that never to shoot less 200 m , you will trust in the rifle you will dont need ,optic when I asked one because we had 9 optics my lieutenant laughed and answered " I should the last of the company to have an optic , because no one needed that less me " you gun choose you , you will never a sniper , a good french rifle man used never optic !
