We welcome back Jonny for this great video tutorial where he shares how to set up Maschine in Logic Pro X properly for better arrangement and routing opportunities.
One very cool thing that the new version of Logic has going on is something that Jonny touches on at the very beginning of this lesson. You can switch between stereo and multi-out instances of Maschine in Logic Pro X. You do need to be running it as a multi-out plugin for all of this to work. With Maschine and Logic both set up properly you will be able to route your sounds so that each one you have in a group in Maschine can have it's own channel in Logic for more control and truly professional mixing options.
With this level of complexity it is important to really understand exactly what each one of the steps involved is actually doing. As you progress through the process it is easier to see and understand what is happening, so if you start out a bit confused it's nothing to worry about. If you are still confused at the end, you can simply watch the lesson again.
Dragging MIDI clips out from Maschine in Logic Pro X is one of the coolest features, as you watch the different instruments being created, on their own channels, each with their own arrangement and perfectly aligned with each other. So you are quickly rewarded for taking the time to set this all up the right way from the beginning. From here on out, the benefits are more and more apparent. Applying effects and processing sounds independently from each other is a no-brainer.
Now you can begin mixing your grooves from Maschine in Logic Pro X like the pros and instantly hear the difference in your music. This is one workflow tips that you need to know, so be sure to bookmark it and share it with your friends so they too can reap the rewards!
Cheers,
OhmLab

I complement Matthew for his patience while trying to create music with probably the most ill-defined and thought out workflow integration in history. The folks at NI should really be proud of the fact that after trying to get simple midi notes to appear in logic that any hope of creative spark has long since vanished. Kudos!

Hey Logic X and Maschine Users you don't have to go through this every time. You can go through it once then in Logic click "save as template". Thanks for the video it was really useful

Thank you, thank you, thank you! I´ve been looking soo long for exactly this all over cyberspace. I am a newbie to MASCHINE-world and a steady user of Logic workflow since many years and it´s really important to me to know the steps how I can integrate MASCHINE production into my DAW if I would want to tweek things there etc. Now things look very bright and gives me new inspiration. Grrrreat tutorial and very well done all the way! It was one of the NI support guys who sent me this link. I am thankful! Keep it up - I am definetly following you from now on. Cheers! :)

I really wish NI would start to develop Maschine as more of a plugin than a complete DAW. I like the hardware control Maschine gives you over drums....but i hate it's integration with Logic....and lets face it hardly anyone will ever tryin make a professional song in Maschine. I only use the controller to trigger drum sounds in Logic/Battery...but i can do that with the keyboard. I'll already have my drum groove finished while you're still routing stuff in Maschine. If thats not enough you have to do the routing EVERY TIME you use Maschine this way...on top of that if i choose to load a Maschine drum pack after doing the routing i'll have to completely start from scratch.

I agree mate. It's integration with Logic sucks! I've followed every step above and when I drag in Midi, it still creates new random Logic channels. Also, the Maschine DAW is a pain in the ass. Hopefully, they'll make it more compatible with DAWs in the future.

Thanks for the excellent video explaining this workflow! Just a few key questions: First, is there a good way to save the maschine multi-output setup as a patch or preset/template in Logic (and Maschine?) to speed up workflow each time I want to bring Maschine 2.4 into my Logic workflow? For example, is it possible to setup a general Logic template with the routing, etc. and a Maschine instance with something generic loaded for quick recall or creating multiple instances when necessary? Perhaps we can save the Maschine instance as a Stack Track for recalling in other projects...then just change the group kit(s), etc. in Maschine and load/perform new sounds for that project. How would you suggest doing this assuming it is even possible? Second, in the video you have a synth on a separate group that you include in the single Maschine instance aux outputs. Is there an ideal way to route separate groups like synth, bass, etc (that would want distinct processing/plugins in Logic) into their own track stack? Generally most of us want to keep the Maschine Instance count low to save on CPU, but would it be necessary to have a distinct instance so you can effectively create a separate multi-output instance (for example "Synths") that you then track stack (or bus/group) in Logic for processing (fx, etc) together? Many thanks in advance for any insights!!
@Adsrsounds
@Adsrsounds 8 лет назад
+porangui Hey, good questions! First - yes, you can save this workflow as a Template in Logic. Set up Maschine as a multi out, create your arrange tracks from the aux channels in Logic, do all your audio & MIDI routing in Maschine - basically the workflow covered in this video. Then in Logic, from your File drop down menu select 'Save as Template'. The only problem with this being if you load a new group, the group will load with its own Audio Output and MIDI Input settings. However, when loading new sounds the sound slots retain their MIDI input & Audio Output settings. And yes, you can also save this as a Track Stack for quick recall in other projects. Did you watch our recent video on creating & saving Track Stacks?: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sTxmAIaBgXY.html By the way, you can also create Track Stacks directly from the Logic mixer now, as of v10.2.1. Second - It's just a case of grouping sounds. You're limited to 16 external outputs from a single instance of Maschine, but you could put all your hi hats to one ext. out, all your vocals to another, etc. If you're creating track stacks from these in Logic, bare in mind if you save the Track Stack for recall in another project, you need to make sure the instance of Maschine is saved within the track stack for it to load properly.

Hi again, The 2 main problems im still having are, 1: when I try drag a kits midi group as one midi file into logic it drags each individual sound into a new track instead of one midi file and 2: I can add all my chord sounds and pards etc fine which are single sounds to each aux track in logic no problem, but when I go to add the drum kit onto its aux, it doesnt load onto that aux it just shoots to the bottom with all new tracks and random instruments like in the video, even though Ive set up the aux channels :s. Hope you can help, its a nightmare

Hey Matthew Acheson (can't reply directly to your question for some reason), since I've upgraded to 2.1 I've found the process to be exactly the same. I'm not sure if the midi batch set up option offers up a different way to route your midi.

+shaney camden As of v2.3 there are some changes : 1. For the MIDI input options - For 'Source' you need to select 'Host', for 'channel' you do the same as with v2.2 - select different channels for each 2. when you drag the MIDI it now drags the MIDI for all 16 sounds in the group in Maschine, unless you go into Maschine piano roll and then you can drag over MIDI files individually.

Man, what a nightmarish and convoluted process. My hat's off to you for figuring this out and creating this tutorial, but it really seems more work than it's worth. Maschine is a tight idea tool but you just gotta recreate those ideas in Logic when you want to take them to completion.

Cool that would be great . I know what you mean about the sketching I've just done a quick idea using maschine & logic x . It's funny I found the set up easier with Logic Pro X , than the set up with Ableton 9 . But because I'm used to Ableton I find automation and workflow quicker than what I do with Logic Pro . Grrrr but of a bummer . I'm swayed towards logic for setup but Ableton for workflow . Maybe I need more Logic Pro X experience then hopefully I will have found my 2 greatest DAWS working in harmony lol . Cheers

Awesome video, but I have a question. I'm at 10:30 and when I try to select each pad number to activate Midi and designate it to it's Midi channel, it makes every other pad number the same Midi channel. Like Pad 1 is my kick, and in Logic it says that it is Midi Channel: 2. So I go to input, make Pad 1 active and set it to Channel 2. But then when I go to my snare on Pad 2, it's already active and on Channel 2, along with Pad 3-16. Where did I go wrong?

Thank You so much! This is what I have been searching for, for days! I have a question though. Is it possible to do this for more than 16 sounds. For example, I have all 16 pads being used for one group in a song, and I have done what you showed in this video, but I need more sounds from a second group in Maschine. I read your comment about grouping below, but then how can you mix each individual sound in logic. Is it possible to mix a sound if the sound is within a group?

I think the best workaround for that is to have 2 instances of Maschine, though is potentially gonna be very demanding on your cpu.

Enyo Aluka We need to do a video covering this really, but in the meantime here's the info for using Maschine 1.8 and Logic 9, I'm hoping this works for the latest version of the software: www.native-instruments.com/en/support/knowledge-base/show/968/using-maschines-host-transport-control-feature-in-logic-9/ Let me know how you get on! Failing that you could always use your automation quick access in Logic and set up some MIDI controls with Maschine - though you need Maschine to be in MIDI mode for this.
@whoisdfunk931
@whoisdfunk931 10 лет назад
this is what i am searching for, thank you man! but have 2 questions. 1st: can you have more than 16 aux channels in the mixer? e.g. 20 maschine sounds to 20 mixer channels? and can you play on top of that "live" into the logic?
@Strinner
@Strinner 10 лет назад
16 external out's is the limit in Maschine 2.0. Though you could start grouping outputs from maschine - drums coming into Logic on 1 channel, bass on another, vocals, etc. Groups are unlimited now in Maschine, so you can have as many channels as you wish in running Maschine, but you're limited to how many you could send externally into another DAW (e.g. Logic). To answer your second question, yes - using the workflow technique detailed in this video means your midi is being triggered in Logic, but you can still trigger midi directly from your Maschine controller or software.

@Adsrsounds

there's nothing wrong with using ext 1, I never tend to use ext. 1 it as thats where audio from Maschine will route before you've set up any routing, so I always keep that channel for that purpose.

Hi thanks for sharing, this workflow is excellent and perfectly suited to my approach. The workflow works great with some but not all of my NI plugins in Maschine. I can see the midi coming into the Maschine piano roll but it does not trigger all the instruments. Oddly it triggers Massive, FM8, Absynth and Spark but not Battery, Kontakt, Monark, Prism, and Retro Machines. I've tried all instruments through the same track and channel setup in Maschine and Logic using the same midi part. Any ideas? Thanks in advance!
@Adsrsounds
@Adsrsounds 9 лет назад
Andrew Mahon Hey, I'm not sure on this one as I don't use most of the instruments you mention that aren't working. I have noticed however, that when I drag and drop MIDI from Maschine into Logic and then load Monark in Logic, the MIDI doesn't trigger. So seems like a common problem, I'm stumped on a solution here though!

Hello....are the routing rules the same for the first version of maschine? And why does the first track need to be blank?
@Adsrsounds
@Adsrsounds 9 лет назад
Blessedchordz I've only ever used this workflow with Maschine 2 software, however I have seen tutorials setting this up with Maschine 1, so it's definitely possible, there may be a slightly different way around it though as the mixer got a major overhaul in Maschine 2. I always leave channel 1 blank as that's the main output of Maschine. The way I set up this workflow is to use every channel after 1, then when I want to audition new sounds in Mashcine to potentially add to the loop I can audition through channel 1.

Constantine III I replied to your comment before - Make sure you don't have all the sound slots selected when you are doing this, if they are it will change the MIDI channel on all sound slots. Let me know if this helps, if not we'll keep troubleshooting.

great video bro, but when I get to the step of making individual midi tracks, there is no "active" tab in the input menu. I am only presented with "Source", "Channel" and "Thru". Does this matter?
@Adsrsounds
@Adsrsounds 8 лет назад
+Kenneth Clarke Jr. There are some changes to the MIDI input options as of Maschine v2.3 - For 'Source' you need to select 'Host', for 'channel' you do the same as with v2.2 - select different channels for each sound slot, and also make sure the 'Thru' switch is switched on.

Can you tell me how I can solve the delay in Logic X whenever I drag/drop a loop. it's fine when there is no loop going but the minute start playing a loop (drag/drop) Maschine goes out of wack and gives me this annoying delay. I can't even get to enjoy making a beat.

Hi ADSR, first of all thanks for the tutorial. There is a problem, when I try to play midi notes from different ext. channels, only the ext.2 is working. I can't for example play midi notes in ext.3, 4, 5 channel because there is no sound coming out. Any thoughts?

+Galko Palko I think maybe go back and do the set up from the very start again. I guarantee as long as you follow each and every step exactly it will work fine.

I've been using Maschine 1.8.2 in Logic Pro X, and I want to be able to keep those projects. If I upgrade to Maschine 2, do you have any idea how Maschine (as a LPX plug-in) will respond in my old projects? I'm worried about this...

All your old Maschine projects will load fine in Maschine 2, so you're all good.

I got a question i would greatly appreciate this if someone helps, using your method to drag midi after dragging the midi to the aux channels, is there a way to still play the midi live with your keyboard thru the aux channels ?
@Adsrsounds
@Adsrsounds 9 лет назад
M.I.N.A. - Trap Beats | Hip Hop Instrumentals | MiNationMusic yes you can still trigger the sound via your MIDI keyboard, just make sure you have the aux channel selected in your Logic main window

Great video really really helpful!! I've liked and subscribed. Question: I don't if this is an easy one but here goes. Whats a good starting level in Maschine 2.0, so that when I load them over to Logic Pro X for mixing and mastering they won't be too high or too low? Or do you normally start with a "mini mix" in Maschine, load that to Logic and do more mixing there. (I feel like that would be double the work.) Thanks!
@Adsrsounds
@Adsrsounds 10 лет назад
Good practice is keep your overall output (in Logic) between -3 to -6db and nothing going into the red, whether it's in Maschine or Logic. So keep your eye on levels in both programs. One of the main reasons I created this workflow was so I could arrange and mix in Logic, so the only mixing I'd do in Maschine when working in this way would be to make sure nothings red lining on the Maschine mixer.

ADSR can you help me please? I know that they added HOST option to MIDI routing input inversion 2.3, but I dont know why some of the: for example open hi-hats sounds different now than in maschine scenes? I am totally crazy about that. Thank you

I'm still learning, so excuse this question if it's very elementary leveled, but what do i do if i want to use more than 16 instruments? Start back over at 1?
@Adsrsounds
@Adsrsounds 8 лет назад
+MadmanAcrossTheWater Maschine is limited to 16 external outs, so in order to have more you would need to load a 2nd instance of Maschine.

Update: If you have the newer version of maschine, when your're assigning the MIDI input channels after you've laid out the regions in the timeline, change "Source" to "Host" instead of the old "active" button like on this tut.

So what if I want my tracks to import as mono? The only option I have is 16 stereo outs, but I mix in mono and there is no track components in logic on the channels routed to maschine that allows me to switch to mono, also I've tried bouncing the individual midi tracks to audio and it doesn't give me the option to do so on the maschine routed channel strips in logic. Your help would be much appreciated!
@Adsrsounds
@Adsrsounds 9 лет назад
James Billinger You could collapse the stereo tracks to mono in Logic using the utility plug in. Just load it up and click the mono button - then click and drag to copy it to all the other channels. Or you could route your Maschine returns in Logic to a bus and click the stereo button on the bus channel strip in Logic to collapse the signal to mono.

One of the few people who have a decent tutorial on this topic. Thank you! Any idea if it is possible to channel more than 16 aux input/outputs through to logic and back etc? I understand it correlates with Maschine's 16 pads. However it would be real helpful to find some way around this as I have far more tracks on my maschine project than the 16 numbered limit will cater for.
@Adsrsounds
@Adsrsounds 9 лет назад
Olly C Maschine's external out's are limited to 16, so in order to do this you'd need more than 1 instance of Maschine loaded. Definitely something NI could do with looking at in a future update.

Hey, i changed the midi input and output and dragged and drop the midi data to the corresponding channels and ext. but when i enter a new scene it doesn't play. I pulled a piano roll for one of the aux and the sound didn't play on the piano roll. Do you know why it could still be triggered by the maschine scene?

On the MIDI input page, have you set all the Sounds to 'Host' and 'Thru'? There's were a couple of changes to the MIDI input page as of Maschine v2.4, we did an update to this video here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-b0VdPCfifoQ.html

When i get to the point where I'm importing the midi and changing the channels for the inputs in maschine i dont get the option to switch my midi to active. Instead it says default, host, and focus. The only way i see midi active is if i go to group instead of sound. Then for some reason logic wont trigger my sounds from maschine when i open a new scene in maschine to check that. I thought i had everything settled but it keeps messing up on me every time i try to do this. Do i need to do a update on maschine or something?

Great tutorial. However, when I try to get get the midi input to Logic it won't work. When I choose an empty scene in Maschine I hear nothing and when I got to input -> Sound I get "source, channel and thru". When I go to input -> Group it looks like yours does under sound but then obviously I can't route the track individually. What am I doing wrong here? I've followed every step in the tutorial. Why does it look different under the same part of the program (input)? Thanks!

Is there a way to import or carry automation information along with the midi patterns into our logic tracks? I’ve tried and it doesn’t look like there’s an easy way to do it. You have to either redo the automation or convert the maschine pattern to audio and import that. Lame. Please let me know if I’m missing something. Thanks!
@avinashlalwani1475
@avinashlalwani1475 11 месяцев назад
Also, if you decide to redo the automation in logic, you can only do it on the first track. Only on one track. No more. It’s quite terrible

Great tutorial . How would you continue from this with regards to automation & mixing etc . Would it be best to use your DAW or Maschine . Or could you use both ? But then surely it gets confusing . Would be great to see a more progressed tutorial with an idea or explaining how the mix or automating . Hope this makes sense .

Personally I tend to use Maschine as a sketch pad, kind of like an enhanced sampler. So most of the sounds coming from Maschine are drum hits, or one shot samples - so not stuff I would automate much in anarrangement. But yeah, if I was to automate I'd prefer to do it all in Logic. I used to use Ableton rewired to Logic, and would have 2 separate arrangements in each DAW, and that got pretty confusing.
@Adsrsounds
@Adsrsounds 10 лет назад
... setting up automation lanes in Logic/Abelton/etc to automate paramters in Maschine isn't too difficult, and yeah definitely something we should feature in a future tutorial.

How do I just record audio into logic x from maschine? So if I have a project in maschine n want to import the drums into logic and a massive melody. How would I do that without doing each individual sound from the drum kit.

You need to put Maschine into MIDI mode to do this.
