My Maserati Granturismo MC was rusting underneath. I had no clue, but due to the AC making a noise I looked under the car for leaks only to find huge rust spots. These metal piece could impact the structural rigidity of the car causing a catastrophic issue if it weakens. I made this video to help you understand the issues associated with the problem and how the repair was made. I stored my 08 GT in Burlington VT in the winter and would go and start it once a month without a battery tender. Sold it after driving it 20k miles. Why, because the dreaded clatter camshaft variators clattered one time! estimates were 9-12k to fix. Car was great and will be buying another one soon.

Thanks for the plug!!! Beautiful car! I can sure help you out any way possible with the infotainment center. It is all plug and play, no cutting, splicing, everything just plugs in. retains all the factory functions on the head unit, climate control and the new infotainment.

Thanks for the open and honest feedback from your experience of owning the GT. I get an 11 year old GT S delivered to me in 2 days so this kind of info is really useful. I too already have the "oh my, how much is that going to cost me" feeling in the bottom of my stomach 🙂

Clean car, nice buy! If you plan to keep the MC and don’t want to deal with battery issues, you should check out lithium batteries (if you haven’t already). Antigravity sells a lithium H8/group 49 battery, and Braille makes a lithium Intensity Carbon H8/group 49 battery in 2x size variations. They cost a good bit but are worth it. They also provide more stable voltage, which might help with the other electronic gremlins you mentioned. You won’t have to keep it on a tender if it’s driven once every week or two with a lithium battery, let alone replace it nearly as often 👍

@@evns7142 $500+ depending on the battery. Braille makes a few lithium versions/sizes depending on the need. Some cost $1k+ but the more expensive ones are mainly intended for cars being raced or tracked heavily.

@goldbug5180 11 месяцев назад
@@barenekid9695 Completely respect your fear/logic (used to race LiPo RC cars back when they first came out- scary indeed). However, Braille and most other automotive lithium batteries use LiFePO4/LFP which is generally much safer than traditional lithium polymer batteries. LiFePO4/LFP is lithium iron phosphate and LiPo is (typically) lithium cobalt. I doubt it would even be legal/allowed to produce or sell a true LiPo car starter battery. Hyundai uses them to an extent in some earlier hybrid and fully electric vehicles. Not trying to sound smart, just trying to help out the car community.

Mine were starting to rust too. It doesn't help that they hold water either. I took mine off and drilled a hole in the very center of the "X" and then cleaned them up and powder coated them. You can get the plates online really cheap (like $13) and just replace them every couple years too. No big deal.

Nice informative video! Yours is the only one that comes up on my search in regards to “rustproofing Maserati.” I got a low miles 2011 Quattroporte for my mom after her old car was totalled. I appreciate it more and more the longer I’m underneath it doing maintenance. The Italians have their own flare and hopefully this F136 engine and ZF transmission will last for a long time. I changed every fluid than can be changed and I hit the undercarriage with Surface Shield spray. A more popular treatment here in the Northeast would be Fluid Film. There’s lots of vids on that. The Quattroporte has the same thinly painted metal reinforcement as yours. Both front and rear subframes should be heavily coated every year IMO. Cheers and enjoy driving it like you said! They’re meant to be driven

From Dallas, but took ours up north and it got exposed to road salt by an early snow storm. Had ours washed and the bottom ceramic coated (not much rust protector sales folks in Texas since we don't use salt). It's worked well as far as I can tell. Might be an alternative to consider.
@vqdriver
@vqdriver Год назад
@@egeckolizard1149 the ceramic coat won’t adhere to surface rust too well. I’m talking about the front and rear mild steel thinly painted subframes and aluminum alloy suspension structures, brake hoses, fuel lines, underbody, not the clear coated areas of the bodywork. Goto Home Depot online and buy 4-5 cans of Blaster Surface Shield. Have your favorite independent mechanic spray the subframes and lift support areas generously. OR get your favorite beach towel and lay on your driveway and have at it! The ROI is thousands (lol). Do it every 1-2yrs. It will creep into the surface rust and prevent further corrosion. Works well! A distant 2nd would be Fluid Film spray (also avail at Walmart) but they’re both $10ea and Surface Shield is a secret (as of now). Yes even in drier Texas it will develop surface rust kind of like how disc brakes do after a rainstorm and sitting for a day or two. Sorry for the text wall. Cheers and happy Italian motoring!

Had my '12 since '18. Learn to do your own minor service at least, you'll save a ton of cash. Update the head unit, cayman spider is legit 💯. Just did mine in December. It's not bad, just take your time and be careful taking off the molding across the dash. Makes a ton of difference. Desticky all the vents. Have fun and don't worry about something bad! What's gonna happen is gonna happen. Side note, save up for brakes/rotors and really save for shocks. Scuderia Parts is your friend. Windshield will cost $4500 installed at the dealer. Do *not* use anything except OEM wiper blades, if they are off by even a millimeter they can/will bend the wiper arm and and you get to replace the motor to fix it and not fixing it will cause the rubber wiper part to separate from the metal holder and you get a scratched windshield to replace. Ask how I know.. 🤣

Make sure you buy a battery tinder as well. The battery drain on these is serious. I drove my car one day and the next day morning it was nearly a depleted battery. I get TPM errors randomly that usually go away while driving I know a guy that daily drives his and he said he hasn’t had any major issues I can say so far I haven’t had any major issues other than the one year old battery drain.

That's silly. These are called sacrificial plates that, as in the marine industry, draw corrosion away from all other places from the chassis. It's not true that cars in Italy are not rust proofed on the underside because of the climate as with cars anywhere else on the planet. Nonsense... The cars are dipped before assembly...! You've had these plates replaced as I had but it will happen again as it's meant to.

For North American owners, in 2007 Maserati recalled the following model years 2005-2008 QPs and 2008 GT. There was an insufficient amount of anti rust proofing chemicals applied to the tie rods at the factory which could have resulted in a potentially deadly wreck for drivers of those effected model years. Maserati corrected the issue and the 2009 and onward model years QP and Gran Turismo did not suffer the tie rod corrosion issue. If people live in areas such as coastal communities or areas with harsh winters, snow ice and subsequent chemical agents used on roadways in winter, I do not recommend driving these cars in winter. Too much salt in the air (coastal regions) and too much salt on the road surfaces (winter driving), these are not daily drivers. I use my GT as weekend toy when the weather is clear. My Volvo S60 sedan (T5 AWD) is my daily driver and can handle the snow of Norway (Oslo) just fine. If one should live in a costal community and wants to own a Gran Turismo (or similar) my advice would be to drive it on the weekends only to minimize the effects of salt corrosion, or invest in a protective agent that can be applied to the under carriage.
