Can we talk about Eric Stoltz? The genetically blessed person (understatement) who became Rocky Dennis. At no moment during his performance do you recall his natural appearance. A highly underrated performance by Stoltz - who off the top of my head you would only know as the heroin dealer from Pulp Fiction. Highly recommend John Hughes' "Some Kind of Wonderful" w/Stoltz and Mary Stuart Masterson (Fried Green Tomatoes).

Cher has stated in an interview that the reason she stopped making movies is because all of her early films were literally so good, that she became sort of paralyzed over the choice of what movie to do next because she always wanted to be as good as she was in Mask, Silkwood, Moonstruck, Witches of Eastwick... etc.

I grew up around outlaw bikers. I had a lot of uncles, and aunts that weren't blood. They used to call me Dougly do-right, and always pushed me to do good in school, and by virtue of seeing them in various stages of loaded, kept me away from drugs. It's definitely an interesting family life.

I grew up with extended family who were wrapped up in various drugs and they were the best advertisement for not doing drugs. They always watched out for me like that too but not in a condescending way, they would just point at themselves and ask me not to make these same decisions. Addicts self aware enough to protect others even if they can't save themselves.

The Academy made up for it the next year by nominating her for Silkwood and later for Moonstruck.

And I like when Amanda and Keith come out of the party and see Watts, and Watts says she was impressed by what Amanda did and that she admits she misjudged her - the look on Amanda's face - she doesn't have to say anything, but you know she's thinking she misjudged Watts, too. And that's the moment she realizes what's really going on and knows she's going to give the earrings back to Keith. Then the final part with Keith and Watts is amazing! After being snubbed at the 58th Oscars in 1986 for her role in Mask, legend has it that the Academy was biased against Cher in light of her past Oscar wardrobe choices, believing that she “needed to learn how to dress like a serious actress." Cher responded by showing up to the 58th Annual Academy Awards in March of 1986 dressed in a black sequined gown with a cut-out halter, exposed midriff, and a towering feather headdress. She presented the award for Best Supporting Actor, telling the crowd, “As you can see, I did receive my Academy booklet on how to dress like a serious actress." She won the Oscar for Best Actress for Moonstruck two years later.

That's pretty hilarious that "Jurrasic Park" is what you think of when you think of Laura Dern. Why is that a "fun fact"? That's the most "i don't know anything about Laura Dern" fact a person could come up with. Obviously, any real movie fan knows that she is most principally associated with David Lynch ("Blue Velvet", "Wild At Heart" and "Inland Empire"), and has done a string of incredible roles ("Citizen Ruth" being particularly great; was fantastic on "Big Little Lies"), and is the daughter of Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. Those are the REAL fun facts, not that she ran around in front of a green screen for dopey "Jurrasic Park", lol.

Man, when Ashleigh said this is a feel-good movie I knew she had a long way to fall. I can't wait until she watches Terms of Endearment... And an Officer and a Gentleman and Urban Cowboy. What I think of as the Debra Winger trilogy with a bonus of Jack Nicholson.
@moeball740
@moeball740 2 года назад
Officer and a Gentleman was a strange movie in that of course it was marketed as a love story between Richard Gere and Debra Winger. But the most important relationship in the film is actually the one between Gere's character and the drill sergeant played by Louis Gossett Jr., whose Oscar was well deserved for such a powerful performance. Actually I think this movie really brought out the best in Gere.

I knew you were in for a cry fest. I recommended this movie a long time ago so I'm glad your patreon peeps finally pushed you that direction. For me, this is right up there with Steel Magnolias. The character development, and the reality that life, even a good life, isn't always easy and it will come, sooner or later, with heartbreak. Rocky's poem has stuck with me since I first viewed this movie back in 1986. It's simply... deep, and worthy of paying attention to. Kindness, is not always free, but it is often offered without a price. Glad you saw the value in the movie and enjoyed the story... and recognized the lessons. Mask is a Hollywood gem!

Another great movie that deals with deformities that you should check out is The Elephant Man, which is a better film to me with an amazing performance by John Hurt and also contains one of the all time great movie lines in "I'm not an animal, I'm a human being." I was a camp counselor for a kid with this disorder (or something similar). It was the late 1990s, 15 years after this film, so treatments had improved. His condition was pretty well treated, though he had had a lot of surgeries and still a large growth over one of his eyes. He was the nicest kod at the whole camp and everyone loved him, fortunately. I googled his name. It is a little too common to be sure, but I think I found a picture of him, now in his young 30s. If that's him, you can't tell there's anything wrong.

People are mean... Which is why I am so cynical and sarcastic, because you get what you give. Too many people can only feel good about themselves by attacking others. The kid is a pretty solid actor who went to do a lot of interesting things as a grown up. He's the drug dealer who sells the heroin to John Travolta in "Pulp Fiction" and he plays a bank robber in a Tarantinesque heist movie called "Killing Zoe" from back in the 90's. I always liked that one even if it's a bit derivative, and most people don't seem to know it even exists. He's also the lead in John Hughes' "Some Kind of Wonderful," which is a movie Hughes made basically as a way to tell the actual story he wanted to tell after the studio made him change his preferred ending to "Pretty in Pink." He was also the original Marty McFly in "Back to the Future" before Michael J. Fox was able to work out his scheduling issues and they re-shot the movie with him when it was mostly done, which is kind of funny because his co-star in "Some Kind of Wonderful" is Leah Thompson, who plays Marty's mom in the "Back to the Future" series.

Fun fact: at the wrap party, Eric Stoltz almost wasn't let in because no one knew what he really looked like without the prosthetics. He was and still is a very good looking man. being born with a cleft lip & pallet in the 80's I wore this movie out watching it whenever I felt bad about how I looked. when the bullies would make fun of how I talked I would go home & watch this. I wish Wonder was based on a true story or at least a real condition, but it is only based on a fictional book. There should be more movies like Mask being made. If I wasn't on the spectrum & dyslexic I would try to write my life story but I suck at telling stories. I was always a laborer throughout life till I got injured on my 2nd deployment, but I cant even tell a joke well I forget things & ruin the punchlines. I mainly draw, paint & craft now, I tried my hand at a comic book but I didn't get good reviews.
