Critical Role Fact: Before the big reveal of Kaylie, Scanlan and her had a musical duel with flutes. In the end Scanlan was winning only to fake a mistake playing and graciously give her the win. The funny part is Scanlan’s player forgot he had wagered everything he had on the duel, which was a bag full of several things and hundreds of gold pieces. So not only did Scanlan learn he’s a daddy, he was also flat broke that night after paying for all those missed payments on child support.

This Vax/Matron of Ravens dynamic is even more powerful when you realize Matt made the story arch to help Liam cope with is dying mother.

"Why you gotta be all ominous?" She is LITERALLY the goddess of death.

"She's basically a god" "I think she is a god" technically you're both right, the Matron of Ravens was once a mortal who challenged the god of death and won, replacing them and erasing all instances either of their names.

This has to be one of the best depictions of a god of death that I've ever seen. The Raven Queen isn't cruel, indifferent, dismissive, or just some unknowable monolith, but a caring, motherly figure who understands her role and its wider context. Also, I sincerely hope you haven't spoiled yourself on the streams of Campaign one, cause there's going to be a number of events that lose some punch when you know they're coming.

In the game, Sam actually made a History check (IIRC) to see if he remembered Sybil; Matt said he remembered that Sybil got very clingy, very quickly.

You didn't just say, "The mask stays on during sex." You said straight up said, "THE MASK GOES ON DURING SEX."

Isn’t it sweet that Team Half-Elf had resolutions all at the same time? Vex is accepting that Vax and Kiki have feelings for each other, and urges Kiki to not let go. Kiki is accepting that she stills loves Vax, and that Vex gave her approval because “it always matters”. And Vax is accepting that his calling is not what he assumed, and he is at peace now with knowing his purpose.

The design and execution of the Matron of Ravens gives me chills every time, it's so gorgeous

Burt is an Easter egg to the fact one of Scanlan's fake names was Burt Reynolds, Esquire. Sam would often use real famous names for his aliases and make pop culture references in his inspirations. Hence beautiful moments like. "YOU LEAVE WHEN BURT REYNOLDS TELLS YOU YOU CAN LEAVE!" Or "Here's a little song I wrote. Might want to sing it note for note. Don't fuck up. Or I'll kill you"

Scanlan really is that friend who is goofy as fuck 99% of the time but that 1% is them saying some of the most serious and profound shit you've heard in a while.

Fun fact: In the campaign Vax and Scanlan's heart to heart was initially about Scanlan nuking a couple of innocent bystanders with a fireball spell because he realized at the last second Vax was in the blast zone and shifted trajectory. Whoopsies.

“She doesn’t look like someone else she looks like you, dude” Well, Sam DID make a joke in the campaign that Scanlan is such a narcissist that her looking like him was probably a bit of a turn on

That sword was enchanted with unmovable object , it turns any object into a fix point in space that canot be moved by any force untill dispelled

The thing the Matron of Ravens is saying about death gives life meaning has strong Death from Sandman vibes, specifically the Death: The High Cost of Living comic. Maybe one day it will get the Netflix treatment like the main show.

I love the way the matron of ravens portray death not in an evil or cult-esk way but more like an actual belief that death is something beautiful that comes to us all and the most sane thing is to accept it and quite literally rest in peace Reminds me of what the priest from Vinland saga said about what love really is. Death for example since it is pure and after you die you can't be changed. You stay in a pure state that can't be touched or ruined

I love the moments between Vax and Scanlan and I’m really looking forward to more of them going into Season 3. Their VAs are best friends irl, and it definitely bled into the roleplay on the stream. It’s pretty adorable imo Also the Dadlan scenes (and pretty much every Scanlan-centric scene in the next episode) make me really nervous and give me very painful feels for reasons that are kinda spoilery and may or may not be fully addressed in Season 3. (To those who know, no, this is not _just_ about “A Bard’s Lament” and what led up to it; it’s also about certain thematic parallels and differences between Scanlan and Kaylie.)

Interesting fact: both Liam O'Brien and Sam Riegel are fathers themselves so, I think that sentiment about "You win" was pretty genuine.

this last set of episodes are an absolute treat now for a quick little comment so the sword Kaylie left with Scanlan was originally an Immovable rod, an item that can freeze iteself in place and cannot be moved without either extreme force (a fact that often gets ignored) or by deactivating it the reason it is now a sword is most likely because that rod actually belongs to Wizrads of the Coast and they didn't want to risk them getting their panties in a twist about liscensing regarding it, turning it into a sword also, the original way they got into the dragon was by Scanlan eyeballing the dragon and teleporting into its stomach, but he actually miscalculated, causing Vax to get teleported into a bundle of muscle right next to the stomach while Scanlan had to deal with stomach acid

If they love Keyleth imagine when they make the Mighty Nein show they will go wild for Jester.

Fun fact, not only can Dragons be wizards too, the most powerful being in Faerun(that's where DnD takes place, most of the time.) is an immortal dragon that's like a level 30 wizard.

Fun Fact: The reason Kaylee didnt stab Scanlan was because when Matt was rolling to attack he rolled two Nat 1's

I don't know for sure, but if I were to guess the pressure plate can only have so much weight on it. If they spread the sand too thin it could get blown away by Umbrassyl's wings, but if they add more... well... if the necessary weight is equal to or less than a crate, I wouldn't risk setting that thing off.

Honestly if you guys like the Matron of Ravens you should go find the scene of Vax meeting her in the campaign. It give me chills and was the moment i was hoping we would get to this season.

The “Burt” guess is a shout out to a common alias Scanlan used in the streams. When there was a situation when he didn’t want to be positively identified, he called himself “Burt Reynolds”

Vax and Scanlan were a lot closer in the campaign, but they have reasons for how they're writing it here. But this whole thing started because their voice actors, Liam and Sam, decided to play D&D as part of their "All Work No Play" podcast, so I'm so glad we got these scenes here.

The part where Vax is trying to show up Scanlan with "I found out i'm the champion of the matron of ravens" just to get hit with "I found out i'm a father" is perhaps my favorite in the series. The look on Vax's face is priceless. and the "You win" is just the perfect cheery on top.

Don't feel a bit embarrassed for the reaction to the Matron. She is hot AF lol. They did such a good job creating her. Neat trivia for Scanlan: Sam Riegel, the player, started trolling everyone by modeling Scanlan after Eminem. That Dr. Draziel troupe that he played with? Dr. Dre? Scanlan has a fake identity called the Mean Man (initials M M/ Eminem). Matt Mercer played into it and introduced Kaylie (Em's daughter Haylie) and Sam Riegel didn't pick up on the hint and still tried to sleep with her lol. Oh, the sword Scanlan used inside the dragon took the place of a Rod of Immovability the party had. Picture trying to move and having a chunk of metal inside you that wasn't moving... until you force yourself to let it tear through your body to get away from it!!!! OOOF

Vex really stepped up as the mommy of group, urging on that relationship and in a way letting go of Vax a little. But then again who can not help but cheer Kikki on, when she gets nervous.

I'm a transhumanist, and one of the common things we talk about is how important that there still be a choice of death in a future with immortality, how their could be billions of years worth of things to do.... but there has got to be a end to the story eventually. It's one of the things I love about these universes instead of our own. Death is just a step, not a true ending.

Vax as the champion of The Matron of Ravens as a storyline is so heartbreaking if you know what happens at the campaign.

Honestly why be afraid of death. It's a natural force that we cannot combat. Yes I get dying is a scary thing because you don't know what will happen next and your afraid of leaving the people you love. But don't be afraid of it. Make it joyful remember the good times you had with those people. Remember good times from your life. Because in the end the only thing we can hold onto is our memories
