Helldivers 2 had over $300 million in sales as of MARCH. No telling what it is now. So they don't need your money anymore. They have enough to fund development on Helldivers 3 and other projects. Now, you are seeing their true colors. When a developer has made profit, as we see in most Steam games, they can oftentimes become emboldened by success and forget who puts money in their hands, we the people. That same CEO who said, "Vote with your wallets" will probably have huge regret if we actually did.

If account linking was disabled temporarily, that means sony knew that they will make it mandatory again, yet they sold the game outside the 69 countries where PSN is available. That's honestly a full on scam.

I saw a bunch of people on Tiktok saying things like "jUsT MaKe the account, it takes like 5 minutes and its fReE hurr durr" or saying that "PC players cry and complain too much", these are the same people that will tell you "just get on the train". Theyre missing the point. The idea that these companies sell you a game, take your money, capitalize on it, then try to push you around and tell you hey, you better do what we say or you cant play anymore is really starting to piss people off. I play on PC, and Ive had a PSN account for over 10 years now but i think this backlash is great. We are showing these corporations that they arent in charge of us anymore. We make them what they are, and look what happens when we turn on them. In like 5 hours there was 15,000 negative reviews and now theyre panicking. The sad part is i think the Devs are going to suffer for Sonys decision here. We've been playing the game for months now with the "Option" to link an account, why cant it just stay optional? They say its for protection, but Sony isnt exactly known for keeping our Data safe as they have a Data breach once a year that leaks a bunch of information. People make the comparison to other games like GTA needing a Rockstar account, or Assassins Creed needing a Ubisoft accounts, and tbh thats a dogshit justification. I dont want to have 100 different accounts just to play games that i paid for. I like Helldivers, its one of the best PVE games ive played in a while but im not licking Sonys boots. I have had a ton of people say "its not arrowheads fault". I disagree, they absolutely share the blame. They chose to work with Sony, they chose to work with these community managers, they chose to allow the PSN thing to stay hidden, instead of blowing the horn on it or making it a clear fact that it was not optional. Sony is being a scummy bully corpo again, but arrowhead is being a cowardly deceitful studio.

Another thing I’ve heard about linking a PSN account to Steam is the amount of times the Sony had massive data breaches and people not wanting to risk their Steam accounts in the event something like that can happen (and probably will since it’s happened many times.)

It's really sad since Sony used to be such a good company originally, but since 2016 when they moved headquarters from Japan to Commiefornia they have really went downhill and continue to.

The funny thing is that Sony could have gotten his sweet, sweet new PN accounts without any negative backlash by offering something in exchange for linking your steam account to your PSN account, by offering super credits or a new exclusive armor and cape set, 90% would have jumped into the hype wagon immediately and the rest eventually with next to none backlash. But noooo, they had to hold the game hostage, throw their weigth and force things into people.

I was a community manager several years ago and I could never see myself or my team even fathom making such statements against customers... this is Twitter-brain in action.

I refused to buy this game from the very beginning because of the anticheat requiring kernel access, and the company you are allowing to have that access has a terrible track record of data breaches. Hard Pass. Theres to many games I have in my library that I havent even played once yet to buy a game with a privacy risk like that.

The real problem is with the gamers.... If gamers keep buying and playing their games, then these companies are going to keep doing it. It's as simple as that.

Nah, I refuse to believe Arrowhead is not at least partially responsible. They had great leverage with how popular this game is, and they did not stop it. Plus, at least one of their high ranking employees has expressed desire for this because it would make banning easier for them. Sony is more responsible, sure, but Arrowhead is not innocent.

Not making a Sony account. If Sony doesn't reverse course, I won't just stop playing, I'll demand a refund from Steam. There was no announcement or proclamation that I would be required to create one "after a grace period" and after I bought the game.

I had to replace my credit card in 2011 and 2014 thanks to Sony's complete lack of security. I don't have a PS account now and never will again - glad I didn't buy HD2.

I just checked the Steam Store page for Helldivers 2 and we're up to 80 THOUSAND negative reviews that were made in the last 2 days... holy shit!

This is a real "You were supposed to bring balance to the force.. NOT DESTROY IT!" moment.

Looks like Sony pulled back and is no longer moving forward with requiring a PSN account for Helldivers 2.

I have to disagree with you on something. Refunding your game is the way to push back against this. It's the only metric that Sony will actually see to show them that the are being stupid. It is unfortunate that Arrowhead has to be collateral damage, but that's why more and more developers are choosing to abandon big publishers like Sony and work on smaller games so they can avoid the corporate over-reach that so many publishers force onto their dev teams. Would you have gotten the exact same game if Arrowhead was working on their own without a publisher? Probably not, but whatever game they did make wouldn't have the baggage that Helldivers 2 is currently being saddled with. Developers working under a publisher like this is a complete loose loose for the devs. There is no real way to push back against Sony without Arrowhead getting caught in the crossfire because publishers like Sony use their developers like a shield. It's a case of 'if I go down I'm taking them with me'. And until gamers decide that 'fine, it's worth the loss', publishers like Sony will continue to walk all over gamers and developers alike because they know they are protected from the repercussions. Remember, unless Sony decides to ban everyone that doesn't get in line with them, you can always re-purchase the game if things improve. A refund does not bar you from ever owning the product again. It's a statement that you are unhappy with the product as it is at that moment.

When are these companies going to learn that if you want to have games as a service, you have to give great service.

the biggest difference with sea of thieves is that the account issue was there from the beginning with helldivers, they said IT WAS OPTIONAL they LIED to us they pushed FALSE ADVERTISING i literally was contemplating NOT buying based on such an aspect

Honestly I feel it can't be emphasized enough how much it says about his character that the CEO of Arrowhead, EVEN THOUGH HE HAD NO SAY IN THE MATTER AND COULDN'T HAVE PREVENTED THIS, felt that the hit to the games reviews, HIS GAME, was and I QUOTE, "deserved". He agrees with the players that this is dumb and doesn't seem to feel any resentment towards the THOUSANDS of people who are getting refunds and lowering their review scores, all of which takes money out of HIS pocket. I feel that's a very strong showing of solidarity with us fans and it honestly gives me a decent bit of hope knowing that there are still some people in positions of importance related to this game that are on our side.

this could probably be related to the Steller Blade issue of players canceling Playstation Plus subscriptions. Which is in protest of censorship when it was promised there was supposed to be none.

Sony's earning call is in 10 days btw. This is 100% done to bolster their new psn users numbers. They want to be able to tell their investors "look how many new users we got" and trick them into thinking that every new user means a new ps5 user

I gave up on Sony in 2018 when their new censorship policies single-handedly killed Senran Kagura as anything more than a JP mobile game. It took way too long, but it's nice to see people are finally pushing back at them.

I'm a PC player. Sony has a known history of being TERRIBLE with customer data. I did not agree to this requirement when I purchased the game. I would rather they remove crossplay entirely. If they don't backtrack on this, it WILL become a legal fight for them.

UPDATE: I just heard this morning that Sony has backpedaled and threw out the PSN account linking requirement, after 214K negative reviews and being de-listed in 177 countries.
