What a great aircraft! I flew the H-46 in Vietnam 49 years ago and it was an honor to be part of USMC history. Paul Sniffin (Captain)

My last year in the Marines, I was a crew chief on a CH-46 at HMMT-302, in Santa Ana, CA. The base was located on the spot that was an old Blimp base, with gigantic hangars. Best job I ever had in the Marines! We were in the air six hours each day, three in the morning, landing each 90 minutes to refuel, then three hours in the afternoon! I loved that helicopter! That base is closed now, and the squadron is in Oceanside (Camp Pendleton area). Two T-58 GE-10 jet engines, love the smell of kerosene in the morning!! That was in 1969.

I shed a tear watching this. I flew with the "World Famous Purple Foxes" in Iraq in 2003. Sad to see the Mighty Battle Phrogs finally being flown off into the bone yard at Davis Mothan AFB. They certainly earned their keep. These helos flew in Viet Nam, multiple West Pac deployments, Desert Storm, Iraq and all points in between. Semper Fi and Phrogs Phorever!!!

Two buddies and I enlisted in the Marines, two of us got helos the other went to supply. My buddy Chuck Miller was with the Purple Foxes in 69 when he was killed during a medivac into a LZ that was supposed to have been cleared. It had not been cleared. Shit happens but it still hurts just the same. Forgetting those who did not come home is not an option.

I flew in a Purple Fox bird in Iraq in 2003. We flew from Numanya(South'ish of baghdad. Believe between the Euphrates And The Tigris.) Flew in a Ch-53. For some reason we stopped in the middle of the desert and picked up a john deere tractor. It fit inside the cargo|troop area. We flew down to Ali As Salem AB. We lived in a tent city with no running water for the first few weeks. We got there in Jan 03. Didn't go back to CONUS until November. Thanks for your service

I have very fond memories of the flying birds in the Navy Squadron HC-6 out of Norfolk, VA. They were the backbone of the fleet with vertical replenishment and SAR. It was a sad day to see them go but the memories will last forever. The choppers in my squadron were hand-me-downs from the Marines from Viet Nam war. They had all kinds of patched bullet holes in the fuselage. They took a lot of maintenance to keep flying but were still fun. The shake of it while flying would rock you to sleep.

That’s me at @3:50 the third one in green coveralls. Gunny Hawley whipped his cord at me because we were the last to board an d they were waiting on us. 🤣 This was my last unit (HMM-364) before getting out. It was a fun flight, Did a fly over MCAS Miramar then went down the coast to Coronado and back to Pendleton. Had the pleasure off shutting down HMM-265, HMM-262 & HMM-364. PHROGS PHOREVER.

Sad day for these guys. The Sea Knight was a special aircraft and I enjoyed flying along with them. it was a short experience, just one deployment's various flights and a handful of other trips, but it was good memories. Thank you to the pilots, crew chiefs, and gunners who took care of me on each flight. / Doc P

Although I never got into a unit with the Ch-46 Sea Knight. I always had a passion for them. They are so different looking in flight and I love that about them. I Got to see them finally over seas in theater in 2003 when a few landed in Kuwait to see the M1 Abrams Battle TANK. ERRRRA!

I caught a few rides with 364 during my time at Kaneohe. They are more comfortable than CH53s. A grunt can get a decent power nap on a CH46 -- not so much on a 53.

Having grown up near MCAS(H) Tustin in California, it was common for decades to daily see CH-46s and CH-53s flying overhead. I came to recognize both by the distinctive sound each type made. Fast forward to today, and in recent weeks I heard what sounded like a lone CH-46, and I could see that it indeed was one, the first I had seen since its retirement from the Marines. The one I have been seeing a couple of times each day flies over northern Orange County, always either east to west or west to east. I can see that it is painted with a stripe down its side, so it is not military. Wondering if it is in fire service or commercial hauling of some sort. It's nice to hear a Sea Knight again, just wondering who is operating it. Any info would be appreciated.
