The First Boeing CH-46 Helicopter to be converted from Military to Civilian use. This is the flyby and landing as it flew home for the first time from being refurbished, demilitarized, painted and having received it's brand new Type Certificate.

Love the 46 spent a lot of time on them as a Marine.. we used to spie rig off them it was a fun ride.. correct it isn’t the first civilian 46.. a outfit in New York was flying them as a shuttle in the city back in the 70s..

The best video of the 2 rotors overlapping I’ve seen. I had an argument with someone recently who said that the blades were at different heights so even if the linkage de-synchronised the blades could never hit each other. This is the perfect proof that they would.

As viewed from the top, there is 17’6” of blade overlap. If they were de synchronized it would be a catastrophic failure.

Nice video. I noticed that the lower crew door handle was out. Need to lock that ion place. It can rotate and cause the lower door to open. Also saw that you still have an IR ring on the FWD UPPER anti-collision light. Good to see and hear her flying. Hope you get more in the air. Ret GYSGT CH-46 avionics.

+Richard Tingley Gunny I am happy that you saw that safety mishap-waiting to happen, on the crew door handle, I was fly on a ch-46 and the upper half of the door came off, barely missing the rotator blades... thank god we were banking left at the time...we watched that door land in the Pacific Ocean..does anyone know of other incidents where this has happened...scary....i wonder how many accidents were caused by these doors and blamed on blade failure

All joking aside, it really is an amazingly gorgeous flyer and I hope to see more of it! I love everything about it. I knew I wasn't the only one who has thought about one as an RV.. When I was young, I grew up next to the airport (still live there) and the Canadian Government used to fly the old CH-113 Labrador helicopters around and the noise that came from them used to terrify me. Whenever one would fly by, the house would start shaking as if we had an earthquake and the noise, oh my god. I used to hide underneath blankets and whatever I could find because they scared me so much. Now I would pay to see one fly again in person.

Pan Am and NY Airways used these in the late 60's and 70's for transport in NYC.
@brandenbc31
@brandenbc31 6 лет назад
David Koran they probably were the V-107 which was a cavilian version that never went to the military. But I honestly don't know. All I know is we had to create a new type certificate for these after buying them from a government auction. They look identical from the outside but the engines and enough of everthing inside is different and we could not use the V-107 certificate.
@christophercarter2472
@christophercarter2472 6 лет назад
Yes, they were KV (Kawasaki Vertol) 107's built in Japan. After the Pan Am building crash they were sold to Columbia Helicopters who (mostly) used them for logging. In the James Bond Movie "You Only Live Twice" a KV-107 picks up a car and drops it into water.
@NJCommutr
@NJCommutr 6 лет назад
NY Airways rolled out Boeing Vertol 107’s (not Kawasaki) in scheduled shuttle service in the NY area in either 1961 or 1962. They flew among the three major local airports: LaGuardia; Idlewild, which later became JFK; and Newark NJ; as well as the Wall St NY heliport. They flew over our heads at relatively low altitude every day in those years, when I lived in Jersey City NJ, and were still in use when my parents relocated us down the shore in June 1964. A few years later, NY Airways added service to the heliport atop the new Pan Am Building in Manhattan, but as far as I know, by then they had replaced the 107’s with Sikorsky machines. BTW, around 1963, there was a successful emergency ditching of a 107 in the Hudson River.

I used to work on CH-46's in the early 80's. The rotors are phased so they don't hit each other as they intermesh. Phasing the rotors could take two minutes to two hours to do. The CH-46 is a very forgiving aircraft and if you get any kind of warning sign you need to get it on the ground ASAP!
@john34261
@john34261 5 лет назад
so in a way what i said they're far enough to be safely used in flight with you giving alot more detail and explanation to my estimation?
@doubledbbw
@doubledbbw 5 лет назад
The CH-46 was designed in the 1950's and the rotors were designed to intermesh. There have been several accidents with them when the rotor synchronization failed. This was quite common with the A Model in the mid 60's in Viet Nam. Boeing Vertol had come up with a thing called hover aft. As you approached the landing zone and need to come to a stop quickly the aft rotors would flair. This caused undue stress on the aft pylon, that eventually led to separation normally at the point where the cabin section and aft pylon came together. This is know as the field splice at Station 410. After a few too many accidents the hover aft was removed. I myself was involved in a CH-46 crash on board the USS Guadalcanal LPH-7. I was with HMM-263 off the coast of Italy. We were on an operation and while turning the ship to start a Cobra helicopter the winds came across the flight deck the wrong way and the helicopter I was on flipped over on the flight deck. All the crew survived but the Navy LSE directing the helicopter went over the side and was never seen again. Thankfully the helicopter I was on was a E Model and had full self sealing fuel tanks. If it had not been upgraded I may not be here today. Like I said in my earlier post the CH-46 was and is a very safe and unforgiving aircraft.@@john34261
@john34261
@john34261 5 лет назад
@@doubledbbw i'm sure it would sound frightening if i would hear something go wrong with the propellors doing any landing or when taking any sharp turns with the model A and i'm sure if i smell any fuel that's burnt it would be very devasting and you're right if haven't been upgraded you wouldn't be here
