Here's my take on the importance of a pair of headphones' looks: when I'm wearing them, I can't see them. So I don't care.

VIDEO CORRECTION - According to massdrop website From Christian Tanimoto III.COLLABORATIONS - "This driver is closely related to the driver in the new HD660S. EDIT: Same size (both 38mm as confirmed by Sennheiser), same materials, there are some differences in the damping scheme and driver housing." Regarding saying these sound more like 6** Series than 5** series - This comment was made in comparison to the CURRENT 5** and 6** line up. Not the old one. I am well aware the 580 came before 600 (yall can relax now lol)
@waldschratwicht
@waldschratwicht 6 лет назад
The 660S has the driver from the HD700. The 580X has same drivers than 600 and 650. But with other damping. All three have 38 mm. But the Jubilee has 150 Ohm. Like the 660S. 600 and 650 are 300 Ohm.

Got mine a few months ago, and I LOVE them. I would have to agree with you 100% on your analysis of how they sound. Super detail oriented, not the widest sounding. I switch between these and the Hifiman 4XX that I also got. Between those two headphones, I am very very happy with my listening experiences. Though I may need to get a slightly more powerful amp to really push the 4XX. Love your content, keep up the great work!

For ppl who are into modding just a bit, you can change out the parts like the matte grey to the gloss black from the 660s and the grills too or just spray paint them.

I received my copy of the 58x's a couple days ago and i cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with these headphones, even if they were double the price. For $150 these are a GRAND SLAM. I already have the HD600 and have access to my fathers HD650 and the 58x's are just as good, if not better. To my ears they are more "fun" and have more bass than the 600 and only very slightly more bass than the 650's. To me they are more closely related to the 650's with the difference being a every so slight better vocals response. To me, the vocals were extremely similar to the 600's. All 3 are EXCELLENT on their own regards. For $150 the 58x's are an amazing deal that 99% of people will be 100% happy with, in my humble opinion. If i had a gun to my head and could only keep 1 pair out of the 3, i would keep the 58x's, because the sound signature is a hair more pleasing to me overall. I powered all 3 headphones thru a JDS Labs the Element dac/amp combo. Btw, the 58x's were easier to power than the 600's or 650's, but not by a ton. The Element had much more power left in the tank on all 3 sets. Cheers, everyone!

If you already listened to HE4XX, tell me if you prefer the 58X, please! I want to buy one of them! People say the 58x is awesome, but have no soundstage and i fear the narrow sound like... Closed back headphones. I have trauma about closed things
@mikafoxx2717

@@MTheoOA probably a little late, but I upgraded from the 400i to a Sundara, but also picked up a second hand 58x and.. I can't get the 58x off my head now. I even bring them to work. I might have bought a second hand HD600 because of this, and consider selling the Sundara that I bought new.. the lush mids and timbre of them are incredible and the soundstage feels intimate, and it's not a disadvantage or a flaw because of that.

But I do have to say, me personally, I feel like I get more slap out of the 6XXs. A/Bing them is a weird experience. For me, the 6XXs are more analytic in that I notice more detail, more things... And to my ears they're noticeably darker, or there's less treble energy. But the 58Xs? Their sound signature is just, inoffensive. Before I had the 6XXs, which I'm still getting a real feel for, the 58Xs were my go to. I just kept coming back to them for their musicality. The 4XXs, SHPs, HE 350s, and M40x's all had a less desirable sound, again to my ears, than the 58X. Those headphones just felt like home for lack of a better term. No doubt in my mind, some of the best headphones you can purchase for $150

These are a fantastic pair of headphones. I've had mine for over a month and they are my go to for portable use. Though I use mine with a fiio q1 mk 2 they work perfectly fine without any dac/amp and are ready to ho out of the box. The only complaint I have with them is I wish they had the same headband as the original HD580/600 so it can be more in sync with its namesake.

Nice review Josh! I’ve been through quite a few headphones over the last couple of years, but now have the 6xx, 58x, and DT770. My DAC/Amp setup is very simple, a Schiit Magni 3 and an iFi Nano Black, but I’m happy with this set up. My head says stop here, chasing the extra 5 - 10% in sound isn’t worth (to me) the $1000’s investment. My heart says buy the HD800’s...which would then lead to an amp upgrade...Sigh, is it possible to crawl back out of the rabbit hole without going all the way down? I don’t want to go all the way down...

NewOrder66 Sith Which one do you prefer the most 6xx or 58x ?? And does the 58x has the same smoothness in sound as the 6xx ?
@aja8590
@aja8590 6 лет назад
david maison Mate, I honestly cant pick one over the other. I’m not very good at articulating what I hear, I’m no audiophile. But to me, they’re mostly quite similar, but the slight differences are enough for me to want to keep both. The 58x isn’t as smooth as the 6xx - the treble isn’t as veiled as it is on the 6xx, and the bass of the 58x is stronger and tighter. If I HAD to pick just one, I’d pick the 58x purely because it’s $50 cheaper.

I liked the removal of the title cards for Build, Power, Sound, and Conclusion. Felt more natural and a little more professional when listening audio only. The similarity you mentioned is that the 58X driver is a 38mm version of the 40mm 660S driver. I enjoyed this format and appreciate the reviews every other day so there's an opportunity for more community based content more frequently. Appreciated the review on a product I haven't heard much about.

I own the 650 (6xx), 4xx, AKG 7XX and the 58X. In my opinion (preference) the 58X just sounds superior to all of them. In terms of a more fair comparison, the 58X sounds very close to the 6XX but the bass on the 58X is superior. The music just sounds very full and very enjoyable. On Massdrop and Head-Fi, everyone is praising this set; nobody fully understand why a headset for $150 sounds arguably superior to $500 headsets or equally as good. In my opinion it’s more enjoyable than my 6XX, which lacks in bass. Must own
@davidmason8212
@davidmason8212 6 лет назад
megazine Because of the similar driver of 58x to the 660s I do not think that the 58x has the same smoothness in sound do you agree with me ? And regarding the bass is it analytical like the m50 or boomy like the 770 ??
@rich1051414
@rich1051414 6 лет назад
The bass rolls off at about 100hz. This is a mid forward headset. The high end is also more forward than the low end. The low end is pretty much absent, I am sorry to say. Not as absent as some sennheiser headphones though.
@davidmason8212
@davidmason8212 6 лет назад
megazine why you still keeping the k7xx ? If you have the 4xx and 6xx i think there is no need for the 7xx
@rich1051414
@rich1051414 6 лет назад
"Every" Not true. The DT990's can be FAR too boomy if you mess with the dampening, and they are open backs. Open backs generally have less low end, but that is not an absolute. The primary reason most of them lack low end is not because they are open back, but because of the reason you want open back in the first place. More stereo separation. The issue is, the lower the frequency, the less the brain is able to locate that sound, so headphones heavy on the low end generally lack the separation people expect from an open back headphone.

I’ve had my 58X for a couple of days now and I’m really enjoying them. I’m just powering them from my 2012 iMac and they sound great. I’m considering getting the iFi Zen to power them. The clamping force out the box was ridiculous, probably worse cause i wear glasses though. But I stretched them out over 2 days and now they are very comfy. Give me velour pads over leather pads any day.

The HD58x doesn’t need an amp. I can get the HD58x to uncomfortable volume levels plugging it into my iPad. I hear close to no difference plugging it into the balanced output on my Fiio Q3 dac/amp. The ifi zen DAC will give you great headroom tho. As the zen dac with be more than enough for harder to drive headphones like the hd6xx/hd650.

Just purchased the Sennheiser 58x and Audeze LCD-X and am playing them through a Schitt Magni 3+ (all three discovered through the exceptional reviews of Valour). With EQ (which they both desperately need), I'm disappointed to say that the appreciable difference in sound quality is only marginal and certainly not worth the $1,000 price difference :/ The LCD-X has bit more clarity and substance throughout the entire spectrum of sound, but only a bit. For the price tag, I was expecting something other worldly..... Am I crazy?

You are without doubt the best headphone reviewer I have watched, your presentation and knowledge are unmatched. I really would like these but like you said, they are difficult to get. ( At least here in the UK ). I like to buy from Amazon so I know when I can get things and their return policy is spot on. SO QUESTION, I want good but not boomy bass, detailed but not too bright and metallic treble and most important forward clear warm mids for vocals. What other headphone under £200 ( $) would you recommend ???? I know, bitch of a question 🤣🤣🤣🤣

The one major thing I don’t like about these is how hard they hug around my head, I have never been able to get them comfortable for years and years with the default earpads. I did order a thicker pair of ear pads from Drop for $50 (way overpriced) and they def change the sound to be a little more muted, but they are so much more comfortable now that all that headband pressure isn’t directly on my head, it’s more spread out evenly with bigger softer ear cups. Without EQ they don’t sound great either, but with a good EQ APO profile they sound really good in music and gaming. I do find listening to music on YT is pretty amazing with these headphones. Apparently something in my comment set off the auto moderation from this channels RU-vid hammer settings, and my comment was removed pretty quickly. Sucks we live in 1984 now

I love my pair. I was using a Fiio e7 and e9 amp and dac setup. I just sold the Fiio for an upgrade. My budget is $500 for a preferred balanced amp and dac combo. I’m looking at the Schiit Jotunheim and the massdrop Liquid Carbon X + SDAC. Any suggestions? Thanks! Great review!

Hey Josh. Love your reviews. Not sure if you still look at these comments but ill take a shot anyway. I bought the 58x because i like the clear vocals and intimacy, and do agree with your opinion for the majority. I also just watched your video on what to look for in reviewers and about the roles and responsibilities of a review and a viewer. Needless to say, I value your opinion, and wanted to know what type of headphones you'd recommend at the lower end of pricing ( something like a $200-250 figure) that has a great, wide sound stage. My 58x has its role, but i definitely agree that the soundstage is lacking, and wanna know what I should look for. P.S. if anyone else has a good recommendation for me I'd love to hear it as well!

I spend a lot of time tracking through my Apollo twin quad, I'm a part time mixing engineer and I just can't find use for these. I waited 5+ months (first drop) and I knew they were tweaking the low end but I favor accurate cans such as the 280s nowadays because these f*cc my mixes up big time.

I just got these new off of Ebay for $159 and I absolutely love them although i think the ear space is a little narrow compared to say the 9500's. I think one of the main reasons the 9500 is so comfortable is they are wide ear space . That really is my only complainant and if anybody has a good recommendation on replacement pads that have a wider ear space without effecting the sound signature too much please let me know.

So basically it's open backs that sounds like closed backs. Guess the only upgrade from 598/599 is the HD 800 ( or something like HE4XX, AKG K7XX ), 600 series seems like sidegrade or downgrade for those who requires good soundstage.. or even just some bookshelf speakers :D

actually the HD-660s uses the Driver out of the HD-700 which is a 40 mm driver and the HD-58X Jubilee uses a new never used 38mm driver which although it is tuned somewhat like the HD660s the HD-58X Jubilee has more Sub Bass and is a Quicker performing driver but this and the model it is patterned after the HD-580 Jubilee has nothing to do with the 5 series models because it and the original HD-580 share the same driver as the HD-600

Also something of note is that outside usual massdrop product availability issues, if you live outside the US, you'll need to use a mail forward company as well, this can, and probably will impact the price of these/or any headphones available there.

When they do deliver outside the US, it's usually NA/EU and some Asian countries (Taiwan for example). That still leaves a lot of countries out the list.
@aja8590
@aja8590 6 лет назад
thenewsamken From what I know, the countries that aren’t included are due to Sennheiser, and distribution agreements they have in those regions (which makes no sense in the case of the 58x). I’m thankful that Australia is included, it would be very frustrating not being able purchase without using a shipping forwarder.

What's confusing is that you love the vocals and explain it as the best or one of the best in clarity, but also said I. 150.00 range only, 150 is cheaper headphones and ok should be better,so my point is the 58x cannot compete with 500.00 mids and vocals ? So which 300 or 4 or 5 has way better vocals?? This is very unclear .if Josh can't explain , can someone else chime in on this question.

Nope it’s not close. I feel very enclosed in my 58x either way compared to my 660s. They are tuned similarly, but just looking at the driver with them open it’s not remotely similar and only sounds similar due to sennheiser sound. I don’t recommend the 58x at all. 6xx or 660s or another headphone all the way.

Nice review. However I don't like two things: 1. Major. You deliberately avoided comparisson with 660s. This is a bit strange to me. Feels like 660s are soooo better that it would be a blasphemy to even think about comparing. But if so, it would take a few words to name the advantages. Strange. 2. Minor. Personally I don't like pied gadgets. I prefer them in narrow color tonality. But narrow doesn't mean single color. I think combining 1 or 2 grades of gray with black is way better than having all the parts in equal color. Black ring, black wires, black pads, black frame... just boring. Btw also hate this for sneakers - looking like I have dropped them into a black paint bucket.

I was really interested in the 58X, but already owning an old pair of 580 Precisions from the '90s and the 6XX from Massdrop these seemed like a sidestep from what I already have more than an improvement. The main difference people are talking about with these vs the old 580s is more bass as you said, the original 580s have very light bass and stuff like southern rap is going to have sub bass hiding in the background. I'd have to listen to a pair myself before I buy.
@arthurhaywood2184
@arthurhaywood2184 6 лет назад
The 58X is similar to the 580 Precisions in name only. Totally different driver with an 150 Ohm impedance. I still have the 565 Ovations which sound very close to the 580 (slightly less treble extension) & I'd say that the 58X would be an overall improvement over the 580 Precision but you will lose some soundstage width.
