​@@DMS3TV Ah too bad. I also swapped my pads to Dekoni Elite Sheepskin on my 58x. I seem to have got a big detail boost on mine with these pads (and the felt mod) instead of the velour. I actually was just swapping back and forth between the modded 58x and 6xx as I received your message. You're right, the separation is definitely better on the 650's. My main gripe with the 650's is that the music seems to take a backstage to the vocals a little too much on certain tracks, and, weirdly, the top strings on a guitar (and associated frequencies) are definitely, ever so slightly, recessed compared the lower brighter strings in the mid-range (the 58x does not do this and therefore appears more accurate on chord-rich music to my ears). As a classically trained guitar player, this definitely leads me to question the reference quality of the 650's (it becomes especially bothersome when listening to classical guitar pieces). That being said, I do enjoy listening to the 650's as relaxing headphones in their own right. I just can't view them as extremely accurate because of this. However; this probably isn't something that others would pick up on, or bother them like it does me.

trellusg are these the best headphones for gaming ? I don’t have to much to spend. I was going to get the HD598 but then I saw these. What amp/dac would you recommend. I want good surround sound so I can hear footsteps. I don’t care if the audio is trash all I want is footsteps lol. If you could help I would appreciate it

From Massdrop This driver is closely related to the driver in the new HD660S. EDIT: Same size (both 38mm as confirmed by Sennheiser), same materials, there are some differences in the damping scheme and driver housing. Also from Massdrop but since I have taken all of them apart I already knew they were the same parts Same tooling, comfort, interchangeable 600/650/6XX/660S parts in the rest of the headphone.

@@DavidC2718 Definitely not. The headphones i keep around specifically for FPS games is another pair from massdrop, the K7XX. I'd say they are markedly superior for audiopositioning in shooters, especially when it comes to gauging distances, not just direction.

I also did a side by side against the 600 recently and the 600s have better highs than the 58x and the 6xx IMO but is not as good an allrounder for all my music genres. For audiophile recordings, I would pick the hd600 as my favorite in the 6 series.

They don’t have identical parts... I confirmed all of my claims with sennheiser.. 58X is a different driver and the housing is made with a cheaper plastic. The 58X driver is not in the same driver line as 660S or 700. You can tell that by looking at the actual driver construction or by looking at the drivers performance in measurements (other than frequency response) like impulse response or square wave.

I have spoken to Massdrop and Sennheiser and they both admitted that the drivers are both derrived from the HD700 as is stated on the Massdrop website and the parts do have the same part numbers . In order to do injection molding you have to make the mold with the actual material in mind and there is no way they made new molds for the cheapest in a dieing line . And use the exact same part numbers. I made molds for aerospace and I assure you I am much better informed on the cost and feasibility of what you are claiming . So some low level employee told you they used different plastics ? Bullshit weigh both and you will see they are the same and the rest of the plastic used in the rest of the line cost less than 40 cents per unit so just how much do you think they saved . If you don't like the Headphones that is stating an opinion I can respect that but to make claims that are completely unfounded and backed up by an anonymous source really ? I had a hand in making the F18 , F15 along with the B1 Bomber as well as the Space Shuttle in the tool and die shop and made molds later for BMW Jaguar Ford and GM along with several others and the cost is not in the plastics it is in the molds and if you think they changed it to save 10 cents a unit and think that makes sense ? If you called and asked some low level employee (which I highly find doubtful ) and they said sure we don't use the same parts as the $500 660s then give me that phone number and the name of the bozo that said that and I would gladly call and ask the same Question only backed up with actual technical experience in manufacturing . Actually injection molding plastics has to be made to much closer tolerance than aluminum let's say for the wheels on your car so making molds for Tupperware takes a better more accurate machining process . which our cost was $50,000 dollars per mold times however many lines they happen to run and if you think they retooled just so they could save a couple of pennies. The only way to make it work like you are claiming is to make the parts thinner and lighter so weigh both headbands from the HD58X against the 660s and I will say the 58X will weigh in slightly higher not for any other reason than the 58X has more paint and that will make it a tad heavier . You can make a lot of claims in the Audio world but materials and manufacturing is not one of those things you can debate I've many people that have claimed all of the 6 series are fragile and not going to last but I am still Wearing my HD580 that is nearing 30 years old and other than earpads and Hedband padding they are still working fine.

The Sennheiser Rep (and the engineer with him) who goes to every major audio event told me in-person (Not to mention its clearly audible). When I asked him he laughed and said they would have to be crazy to use anywhere near the same driver. I respect your experience but I'm going to take sennheiser's word on this considering they made the headphone.

The rep who you spoke to is nothing more than a salesman that is free to say anything he wants but Massdrop is likely to be sued if they make faulse claims. As far as the plastic goes saying they are different is just not so . You are out of your depth stick to making claims based on your opinion on comfort or sound quality something you are good at rather than trying to make statements about something you have no clue about . These are made from a rigid form of Polyvinyl chloride which is used in most consumer products such as headphones with the addition of plasticizers to make them more flexible . The strength and durability in Sennheiser 6 series is not the material as much as the design. I'm really not trying to dog you out or have a continuous argument but stick to what you know as will I . I have the whole line as well. I agree with your assessment. I to have spoken to sennheiser , and they said the same thing to me. All the parts for the 58x are the same as the rest of the 6 lineup.

in this particular model it does almost nothing, just a small fix to sennheiser's boost in low mid. But in other models like 5** series it makes sense. In my HD 579 the outer foam was more like rubber and it affected openness very much.

@@MTheoOA Yeah.. They handle the sub bass pretty well, for a pair of headphones. HE4xx is pretty nice as well, after a LOT of break-in. They're actually growing on me, and can be really loud tranks to the way bigger planar-drivers. But they are so much more power-hungry, so you need a powerful amp, if you go 4xx! I think, if I could choose only one in this pricerange, it would be the 58x's, due to comfort and overall sound! I have 58x, 4xx & modded DT770pros, on an NFB11 R2R, and they all do pretty good overall.. Hard to choose only one!

@@MTheoOA No, 58x is only on massdrop, unless your friend can buy them used, while in orlando. But massdrop ships to all country's, as far as I know. I'm from europe myself, so shipping takes a while. But headphones like that, are much more expensive here, so it's worth the wait! Good choice to go with the 58X's!

DMS Thanks for the info. It goods to get multiple opinions on this subject since it seems sometimes people can be all over the play when it comes to the sound characteristics of a headset.

I got the same impressions out of the 6XX vs. the 650 as well. Did you mean to say you'd also give vocals to the 6XX? That was a bit confusing. So you're saying bass presence is fuller on the 58X? As far as detail and air, would you say the 6XX is superior to 58X? I have not heard the 58X yet.

@@criarcanal Hands down yes. They have less sound stage than the HE4XX but are probably more enjoyable to most peoples ears. If you plan on just buying one headphone to use then the HD 58X are a MUST purchase over any headphone right now.

@@Tallnerdyguy i have balance cable tested on my 58x and 660s doesnt change the sound quality... Again 660s are way better. Some get better balanced audio not because the cable but the dac using different Circuit.

The mods change the FR but make no difference in terms of detail or separation which is where my complaints are.

@@DMS3TV Ok just checking. Have you ever tried with magnet additions? I think my increasing the strength of the permanent magnet it can help with resolution, like Beyer and Fostex talk at having over 1 tesla of magnetic flux on the circuit, I improved my experience and I think there was some talk on headfi about it. I thought it could be a difference in the drivers with the 660 since they are both 150ohm impedance. I'll try with even more powerful magnets in the future, but the ones I tried have 700ish gauss on the surface so it adds some at the least since scaling isnt 1-1.

Virtually everyone says the old 650s are darker and less neutral though

Well, I have the old one and they are in the halfway between HD 600 and new HD 650

Just sold a black screen 650 and I own a silver screen 650 as well, the difference between my two units was the black screen was darker and less bass also muddier bass to the silver screen. Just my option between my two examples, there could be variation going on here between units just like most headphones that I've owned multiples of. I also thought the 660s was much better than 58x but again just my opinion between my two units, however I do believe other people are getting either worse sounding 660s or better sounding 58x then I had and it might happen between newer and older 600 & 650 units as well.

600 and 650/6xx requiere a little bit more juice than 58x, and you'll get better vocals, and better overall goodness man

The DAC-X6 can have its jumpers configured for high gain if you didn't know.

Ether yeah I figured as much, at first I chose the 58x just to plug straight into my pc/phone as the source, but decided on getting an amp for the hell of it and was glad I did. I think I opened Pandora’s box though... now I’m always curious as to what “better” sounds like. Before I know it I’ll have 6xx and will be looking at 800s!

i have both.... the 6XX is the least i go to headphone, i just use it for referencing with other cans.... 58x sound signature is fun and lively for pops.....

Hey there, for reference i run both cans on my samsung s5/ lgv30/ oppo ha-2se/ jds el dac and el amp. I prefer 58x much better than the 6xx's for edm/hiphop. The sub bass is much more present in 58x, especially when powered from lets say my s5 alone. Its a much more brighter feel overall as well. To answer your second question id prefer 6xx for vocal focus. The smoothness is just so amazing to hear all day everday.

Yes, as charts and side by side they are not the same as 559. They aren't 660s (as those are balanced) but closer to 660's not 660s.

There is literally pictures showing how the 58X drivers is the same as the 559 drivers.

@@DMS3TV for me u are the most experienced reviewer . when everyone was saying 58x was the same as 660s u didnt. Also they dont have the same sound at all in my ears 660s are more clear better sound separation and also my 58x have distortion on some high notes at the same track that 660s dont have. But again my biggest love are the 650 6xx the only headphone that has relaxing dark sound but at the same time so analytical without all that high treble or beiing over bright. @@Tallnerdyguy I have over 300 hours on 58X and 150-200 hours on 660S , Trust me they DONT sound the same , First of all 660S have waaaaay better imaging its the first you gone hear when you get them, also they are not grainy like 58X are, Also 660S have more resolurion , better quality bass with progression (58X have more uncotrolled bass) 58X are just between 598-599 series and 600 . They are good really good . BUT 660S and 6XX are the BEST by far , They have amazing resolution and the only difference between 660S and 650 its that 650 are darker more forgiving and 660S are a litle more specious without vail more excite and way way better imaging . So 660S for good quality tracks and HD6XX-650 for dark older not so good quality tracks , Both are amazing. And SPL CHARTS are good for sound signature only , trust me there are so many other things that u cant understand from just a chart.

Haha hope you didn't miss read that price difference though. I own a pair of HD 660 S and I enjoy the hell out of my pair of HE4XX if you've seen those. If you get a pair of HE4XXs then try out the Harmon EQ for them. I'm currently running my headphones with a Magni 3 and Topping D30.

That is a completelly different price tag and league....but I'm not stopping you. :)

Hence the reviews and questions. You're right it IS a subjective thing but also about quality improvements in technology too....

@@verdielg and that is just a variable in opinion towards how enjoyable may be to an individual. 6xx is ahead in clarity and detail yet ive seen way too many who own both prefer 58x including myself. Price point is a preference too, but not everyone can drop money on audezes or focals

@@shilmardepedro7229 yes...absolutely. The enjoyment factor is subjective for sure. However, the sound quality and scalability is definitely reviewable and discernible as well. HiFi radio proves this I think... Plus many adjust their listening styles and preferences AFTER being exposed to higher res audio... In other words its all about getting the best bang for your buck and having options such as EQ to tweak any undesired frequencies. Just my humble opinion of course.

most people listen to music for the vocals 👀 these headphones are technically impressive for their price point and have a very comfortable sound signature but for the kinds of music I listen to (mostly instrumental and electronic) just end up feeling kind of disappointing with the veiled kinda grainy treble and narrow soundstage that makes mid bass and lower mids blend together a bit? Maybe I'm just weird but I've never been satisfied with these despite appreciating the resolution etc.

Really depends on what sound you like. With the He4xx, you'll definitely need an amp as it is harder to drive. I find the highs in the 4xx are a bit brighter.

I have 6xx and 4xx. They are both great, and have similar sound quality overall, but 4xx just do more things in a good way - better sound stage, a wider frequency range that you can actually hear. HD 6xx to me do the mids very well, but highs are very shy and bass is just not satisfying enough. They are ok for traveling, better built, and leak much less sound, while 4xx look kind of stupid on the street, and it's basically a huge open boombox, that everyone can hear, however they do offer a nicer deeper bass, and are decent at gaming, while having some artificial highs. I have relegated 4xx to house duty only, while 6xx i have them in bed when i have trouble sleeping, their soft and comfortable experience fit beautifully there. Also, good for walking around town, as i can still hear the surroundings, while enjoying music on a medium volume, so that nobody else really hears it. Overall. 6xx to me are just a little bit better: lighter, comfy-er, better built, delicate and refined sound, a bit easier to power.

@@bluesnakesv 300ohm vs 32ohm. Yes sensitivity is down on the 4xx, but they both require amplification. The 58x is better for gaming to isolate footsteps and directionality, but 4xx is better if you are looking for open, airy headphones. Different sound signatures, i enjoy both, just not for the same reasons

needabettername Frequency Response may be similar. But that’s just one aspect of sound quality. There is a clear gap in detail retrieval and driver dynamics. It’s very evident in orchestrated music when you have numerous instruments at play. The 58x becomes quite muddy in comparison to the 660s.

@@k-lawn detail i do agree is not the same. Dynamics can be measured by THD or total harmonic distortion, which again is VERY VERY close, within .1% at nearly all levels. Owning both side by side i can state the 660S' is much more detailed when plugged into a high quality amp/dac, but RU-vid from my phone? Nope. From Amazon music (non-hd) from my phone(lg v40 with amp and dac built in) not really. If i were listening to an auditory presentation on nanoparticulates? Yes. Watching Linus tech tips? No difference. If you have a $1000 source and listen to only flac? Then you notice a difference. If you aren't listening side by side, switching blindly for hours? Bet you couldn't tell. Nor could the 26 students we tested this on. 24/26 couldn't tell the difference. Some can, most can't.

needabettername Yeah, the difference is there but not worth the price gap. Though I have a pretty solid DAC/Amp setup and a vast FLAC library. I still find the 650 to be the best of the entire 6 lineup. Though I sold all my 6 series headphones to afford my 800 S.

@@DMS3TV youtube is slightly compressed. That won't magically make them sound tonally almost identical.

@@baronvonlichtenstein I guarantee trying them side by side they sound very different. A good number of times 58X owners have come by the studio and tried a 6XX/650 side by side against it and said "oh wow that's way better!"

It is definitely more for music; as to why I decided not to go with them. With your suggestions I never liked Audio- Technica for their audiophile. I just never found them pleasing and always went with better. I'm sure once you get into the $$$ range it would be a little different. The TYGR, I never personally heard. I just said neither because I was only familiar with one. Currently I am looking at PC38X & Akg k7xx / 702.

Peter Clijsters they aren’t the same drivers and the part number in reference only refers to the housing fit. I confirmed with sennheiser which said this driver is closer to a 559 in terms of performance but was tuned to be tonally similar to 660S in frequency response.

Ok maybe Zeos could have called Sennheiser before making such claims. Anyway to my ears they are more resolving and clear compared to HD650. Now I really am curious to listen to HD660S :-) Thx for the clarification

Interesting... I have them coming Tuesday and I'm gonna compare to the 660s. I have a feeling they can't be that close to the 660s. Sennheiser would shoot themselves in the foot.

The Chef basically what DMS said, but I think they have more soundstage than the hd650s. Not a lot but a little more. And the build quality is the same style obviously but it just feels cheaper than the other hd6 lineup. The hd58x does sound amazing for $150 but I still like my hd660s more.
