Bet you didn't expect to see me here. This is only the beginning if you like Harman bass EQ'd in with 100% extension. Wait until you try an LCD2 lol. Also, very very technical review for a new reviewer, you've clearly done your research and maybe, just maybe, seen a couple of my videos, hah

Definitely didnt expect you to be here, big fan, thanks for the comment. I've had a bit of free time on my hands so I put a fair bit of time into this. I'd love to try LCD2 but its a bit out of my price range atm, one day maybe.

I received my HE4xx a few days ago. I agree with your enthusiasm about the lows and other aspects. furthermore I've been testing those nice HPs in balanced conf. using a double 3,5mm mono>2,5mm balanced stereo cable I previously bought in the US, which I spent additional 45$ for. My device that I used for testing is the M11 from FiiO (nice gear, btw) BUT.... after an appropriate period of time listening music through these HPs I've put my AT MSR7b on and....they are superior in every aspect (in balanced configuration, using the AT cable Included in the price of 209€) when compared to the HE4xx, except for the very low range, where the HE4xx are a bit more extended. however, the MSR7b are at least 15 db more efficient, which is not an inconsiderable issue. to be clear, I like the HE4xx very much, though... It's just that IMHO the MSR7b are the BEST HPs under 250€ and I mean including the HD6xx, 58x and so on.... I'm seriously asking why ALL the most popular and experienced testers I know (including you, that I greatly estimate) have not reviewed them yet. Hope you have an opportunity to test those wonderful HPs. ciao.
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 4 года назад
I think the problem with the MSR7b is the price and perhaps also Audio-Technica's reputation with closed backs (M40x, M50x which people love to hate) hence why so many people have skipped them. They are usually going for around £200 which is pretty pricy all things considered. I've wanted to try them for a while though. As long as the tuning is good they look like they would be much more comfortable than A-T's monitor line up, much better pads from the looks of it.
@davidepollak3
@davidepollak3 4 года назад
@@WheezyTech yes, it could be. M50x do really suck when compared to the MSR7 and that goes double for the MSR7b which btw is at a much higher level of their predecessors. the b version is a lot more confortable, 50 gr. lighter, more balanced, with more extended lows and mids that you could easiiy compare to the best planar hps.

I put ZMF Ori lambskin pads on mine and the bass got better. Not the cheapest mod though. I still pull them out on occasion but my Aeolus are getting most of my attention lately.
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 4 года назад
I'm tempted to put some Dekoni pads on, I would normally avoid pads like that because they colour the sound too much, but lets face it I'm not listening to these for accuracy reasons, only for fun.

Just came across your headphone reviews. Very good reviews. You seem to be trying for objectivity. You seem to really like the Senn hd650/6xx. They're my latest headphone purchase and I'm trying to get used to thier sound. I find them fairly dark and warm. I have other warm headphones but they have more treble than the hd6xx. I do find them narrower and more intimate as well. The midrange is very smooth but I find the upper bass elevation and the beginning of the lower midrange to be slightly more dominant. I do enjoy listening to them, though. Very smooth and relaxing.

Man, you´re going to become my reference reviewer!. I used to own the 4xxs and I fully agree with your description. Although I enjoyed them a lot with spacious, instrumental music the likes of Jean Michel Jarre or Mike Oldfield, the huge soundstage and separation and somehow recessed vocals transmitted overall coldness for other styles. I have not tried other planar so I do not whether it has to do with this model or with planar in general. The audezes are said to be warmer and a more forward midrange, but so far I had not have the opportunity to test them. It would be great if you could do it for us our followers :-). Kind regards!

Thank you for your review. I only have two wired cans: DT 990 Pro and DT 990 Edition both 250 ohm both with Brainwavz XL pleather pads which increased the bass slightly. Now I'm considering these headphones as my first foray into the planar world....consideration over. I just ordered them for $159 right now with free shipping so they were $171 with tax. If I don't like them for music I'll definitely use them for gaming as I need a richer sound during battle. I had the monolith m1570 in my cart but just couldn't complete the purchase.

should i get the he-4xx or the dt 770? Will be using them for gaming and music but mostly just watching (youtube and other stuff) Also love the way you review them where you take some time for build quality and talking about the whole headphone instead of just the sound, and when you do get to the sound you try to explain it and then at the end show measurements, which is a plus for people like me who don't understand measurements
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 4 года назад
Thanks for the kind words. I think the HE4xx and the DT 770 are very different headphones so not really comparable. They will both be very similar in the bass, source dependant. The HE4xx is capable of serious bass after EQ and the 80 Ohm 770 is also pretty bassy. 770 is brighter, it also has really good soundstage for a closed back headphone. HE4xx will have a much wider soundstage. DT 770 is going to give you some isolation if you need that. I personally find the 770 more comfortable, the 4xx is heavier and the headband not as good. 770 is bombproof and easily repairable in the unlikely event it would break.

I don't have a particularly fancy EQ for this, just turn the bass up a bit. Low shelf filter at 100Hz and turn it up to taste. Hello Wheezely reviews, should I pick sennheiser hd 599 or this for 75% music and 25% open world gaming? I need a tight punchy bass that is enjoyable and the sound needs to be smooth, I will initially use them from my phone but I'll upgrade to a dac amp later. Which one should I pick?

U need tight fast bass and warm at the same time... none of them are both... HD599 are warm slow mid bass and The 4xx are fast tight cold. If u need tight bass amazing imaging and warm sound but with resolution only one headphone has that HD660s but are expensive.

@@WheezyTech yeah, I like big headphones so that really doesn't bother me! I don't know how much the 558's run for right now, I'm using mostly a pair of HD 58X at home (the ones from massdrop) and HD 280 pros at work. However, I'm trying out the dt770 pro 80 and 250 ohm version to pick one out because the 280pros are great but they're so close to the ear that they hurt after a while. I'm picking up my fidelios in Dublin in a few weeks (I'm from Portugal) and I saw a place there where you can try the Audeze you were talking about over there! Also, if you're ever in the mood for a treat hop on a cheap flight, go to Berlin and spend an afternoon at the Sennheiser store, they have a set of HE1 that you can try and oh boy, they are the most incredible thing ever, even when you try the 820's and think nothing is going to top that. Wheezy, so is there a massdrop headphone you do recommend for competitive gaming? Thanks!
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 4 года назад
I would say the PC37x, although many people seem to like the HD58x for gaming. I would imagine the PC37x would be better for competitive tho, its based on the G4ME One, which is based off the same design as the old HD558 and HD598, really good soundstage and imaging and easy to drive.

@mrjoszua 4 года назад
You think the PC37x would be better than all of the other non-mic’d headphones? Including 58x, 4xx, etc?
@WheezyTech
@WheezyTech 4 года назад
For competetive gaming, probably yes. I know people like the 58x for gaming, I can't comment on that myself. The HD6** series headphones have never been known for imaging or soundstage. I find the HE4xx too spacey and too wide for competitive gaming. But having owned the Game One, HD558, HD599 I know they make excellent gaming headphones with superior soundstage and imaging. If you arent looking for a headset then maybe look at the HD599 if you don't mind buying somewhere other than Massdrop?

I don't think they would be terrible, they do have good imaging, but they also have a wide soundstage which may be a bit misleading and throw off the positioning a bit hence why I said they might not be so good for competitive. That said you might find them perfect. I don't play competitive, only R6 Siege and the audio engine in that is just whack. Let me know how you get on with them, I'm curious.
