"Today, we are unveiling the Golden Canary diamond, which is one of the world's largest cut diamonds and the world's largest internally flawless or flawless diamond graded by the Gemological Institute of America. Auction house Sotheby's Dubai unveiled a shiny diamond that weighs an impressive 303 carats.
"The world's largest flawless diamond," a sign read during the unveiling of the sparkling stone that is worth millions of dollars.
STORYLINE:
A 303-carat cut yellow diamond sparkled and glistened in the light on Monday as the newly unveiled stone spun inside its display case at a Dubai showroom.
It "is one of the world's largest cut diamonds and the world's largest internally flawless or flawless diamond," said Sophie Stevens, a jewelry specialist at Sotheby's.
The large, brownish yellow diamond was unveiled by Auction house Sotheby's and is called the "Golden Canary."
It was unveiled in Dubai but will be taken to Hong Kong, Taipei and Geneva, before ending its tour in New York where it will be sold.
The stone is expected to fetch a high value when it is sold in December.
"The estimate for the Golden Canary, which weighs 303.15 carats, is in the region of $50 million," Stevens said.
It "will be sold without reserve, which means it will sell for the highest bidder on the day, regardless of the intrinsic value," she added.
Shaped like a pear, the diamond was cut from a piece that originally weighed 407 carats.
The original stone was initially discarded by miners in the Democratic Republic of Congo before it was found by a child playing in a pile of rubble in 1980.
What miners had disregarded turned out to be a massive rough diamond of 890 carats, which was cut into 15 smaller stones.
