Beautiful! I was a whalewatch naturalist & gray whale census taker for several years and miss these encounters! This is likely a 1 year old following close to shoreline, which is what they do in their early years, learning their way back north. (Mamas also keep calves closer to shore to keep them safer from the killer whales.) Juveniles are usually the ones that find their way into inner harbors because they follow the coastline too closely. Juveniles also tend to be more curious & tend to wander. (We used to joke they're like a teenager with the car keys for the first time.)
So cool...I was lucky a few years ago at the shores a mother and calf swam in in front of the new lifeguard tower not more than 10 yards from me. They were so quiet. Hung around for a few minutes then swam around me and headed towards the pier. Not much surf but this made my day. What a treat.
Jason Karl Whoa, I didn’t know you had tiger sharks in North Carolina. I had a few close encounters with tigers when I lived on Maui - but never got bumped by them!
I had an experience like that in Newport. Two whales popped up directly next to me they appeared tp be feeding. I will never forget it as long as I live!
I remember sitting on the outside at Scripps and waiting...then two tall thin black dorsal fins came gliding out of the water about 20 yards from us. I looked at the dude next to me and he looked at me and we both just started paddling in. 😆 we knew they were Orcas. We weren’t hanging around to “meet them”. Then at Tourmo one day my wife and I were just walking up to the cliff to check the sets and noticed all kinds of commotion about a 100 yards out...it was a shark chowing down on something...seal likely. Birds diving into the water for the scraps. Some sitting on the outside watching, others paddling in...I started down the stairs and my wife said “what the hell? You’re going in??” And I replied...”he’s eating, he’s going to be full here in a minute😄”. We’ve been together since 96, she knows of my insatiable appetite for Nature and reluctantly followed me down to the beach. I Love Mother Ocean...🤙🏾 my friends!
Cool yes. I once was lucky enough to be surfing alone when a pod of 5 humpbacks swam nearby (though not as close as this one). I spent 10 minutes tailing them and never felt the least scared as it was obvious from there behaviour that they knew I was there and all was cool. Shark experts (I'm not one) say understanding sharks' behavioural signals is what makes them experts.
Grey whales are baleen whales, filter feeders, so they're essentially harmless to humans.....unless they decide to"snuggle" with you. There are many along the west coast of north America
Don't worry. In their nesting lagoons in Baja, they will approach you and let you pet them. (I stuck my hand in a youngster's mouth and felt it's baleen.) Their brains are at least 3- 4 times the size of ours. If it hurts you, it's by accident.
I Hope The Gray Swam Off And Not Get Her/Himself Beached. The Incoming Waves Looked A Little Stressful For The Gray While Swimming Through Them! Just my opinion From Watching Drone Footage! Swim On Great Gray!!
Saw a whale at San Onofre a few years back. Last year took a whale watching tour out of Newport and we saw an albino whale. That was pretty cool followed the boat for about an hour.
Black's Beach, everybody knows, you don't need no buttons or bows. Black's Beach everybody knows, there's lots of crazy people there without any clothes. OK, who remembers that song?
I’ve encountered dolphins and seals in the line up, and gray whales while paddling Outriggers, but I’ve never even seen a gray whale in the line up let alone take one on the head. 🤙🏼
Looks so CGI... But that would be a crazy sight... LMFAO my last time in the water was around 2000 I think Daytona Beach going in chest deep about to dunk under a pretty good size wave, and as it's rising before white wash a frickin 12ft to 16 tiger shark, it was longer than a car and massive body, and water so clear you seen the stripes... So after I shit myself I took the wave face first because was no frickin way I was going any further... Oh I so bitched out my dudes, call me that all day... it was the same week the little boy got his arm bit off and the dad wrestled the shark and got the boys arm back... Yeah that kind of week... The kicker tho, as I'm mustering up nerves to go back out there, I'm thigh high and as I was going to say fuq it, I felt what seemed like a basketball floating into my leg, I look down and it's this big ass jellyfish... Man fuq the water I'm good... Lol
I don't think that whale is healthy. I've been out at Black's when whales were passing just outside of the line up. The move quite steadily and stay out of the impact zone.
Imagine back in the day when early man would stand on the shores and watch pods and pods of whales feeding within in sight, hearing their spouts, seeing the rainbow mists, smelling their breath.
Beautiful!!! Wish so many videos would stop with the crappy music...the music has no soul and takes away from something otherwise breathtaking...just my opinion.
One time I was walking on the beach near Malibu. I heard a loud rush of air and I saw there was a mama gray with her baby really, extremely close to shore. I was very surprised how close they were. I think the whale in the video is feeding on sand creatures washed up by the waves. The whales I saw were way closer to the beach than this, as there was tiny surf that day. My friends, Jesus is the only way to get into Heaven. Thousands of people are having dreams of His imminent return. Just ask Him to be your Savior and you can be redeemed. Eternity is forever and you obviously want to be in the right place.
Had a passing thought that the whale strayed slightly from his normal route to tell the surfers, aka defacto representatives of mankind, to stop with the plastics, the garbage, the chemicals and so on because it's pushing them to the point of extinction
