I totally agree. I've never heard him use that tone of voice before, and I hope I never will again. One of the reasons I love these channels (Craigy Boy is also great) is the positivity they bring to almost every video. When 2 of the most upbeat, cheerful, happy people on RU-vid have not a single smile in their video...... It's really bad.

I sat here and was thinking to myself: "Oh... this is bad. What on...." *farmer brought this bull in from elsewhere* "Ohhhhh.... hell."

@@SirBarth that was my thought too. I’m no professional by any means, but I’ve been watching HoofGP long enough to get an idea of how long that bull had to have that issue, and someone should’ve noticed SOMETHING. I’m frankly shocked their wasn’t toe necrosis

@@SirBarth yes, I would think Graeme might refuse to work with a farmer who would allow a cow to get in such a condition because of neglect. It was very shocking. Poor thing. I’m glad he’s gotten some relief.

That actually makes me angry, why, why, why? Total negligence and abuse! Poor Graeme..I know this must have been a huge mess and a heartbreaking case.

@@alexmason2659 you notice these places have the concrete floors. And a lot of foot issues, is the cleaning the only reason they don't prefer outdoors grass? +they are being placed in the concrete barn for some reason (calving, sick, or milking) or are these farms more about space because a large field=increased liability, wild animal attacks, better chance for injury. But, if it's just a temp housing, ignore my comment and if space not being available I understand. Having a large number of cattle can be hard too keep because space requirements are so much greater. Either way. Back home cow's are a lot leaner, but, they physically appear fine and healthy 🙂 and they aren't grazing very much. Just a ton of shade time 😎

@@abnerriverareyes1452 I believe Graham said in another video that most are brought in for the winter because of how incredibly wet it is in that part of Scotland at that time of year. It compromises on their hoof health and general well-being to be walking in the wet mud all the time.

Idk, all that loose horn at the start looked amazing. That alone has gotta feel good for relief.

As Graeme said, there is no guarantee this bull's foot will ever fully recover. But with Graeme's help it will likely improve immensely. It just may take a lot of trimmings and a lot of time.

That's what I was thinking as well. So much of what he shows us is accidents that can be missed easily and are just showing the issues, but this case was clearly some severe neglect and Graeme seems so very sad

Makes me wonder if this is a recoverable condition. Horrible hoof and bulls tend to be so much heavier than cows, which just exacerbates any hoof problem.

He's likely sad because while that bull will feel better after this and hopefully it heals, he knows the bull's quality of life will forever be affected by that and it will likely never be pain free.

I actually thought he was silently livid at how bad this bull's hoof got. It tears him up inside when animals that he sees and cares for a living are neglected to such an inhumane degree (even if they come from farms he doesn't see/trim for).

That or no one around had a crush big enough to fit a bull that big! Seems like the farmer may have recently bought this big guy so who knows what the previous farm was like

@@kevinmanley2498 or the price was right, the rest of the bull looked good, and he knew he had a hoof care professional that could hopefully help make him a comfortable and productive bull.

@@glauvie His feet are not deformed by genetics, they are deformed by neglect. His offspring will be fine. When looking for a breeding bull you look at certain metrics, for beef bulls they are things like body mass, growth rates, intramuscular fat percentages and for both beef and dairy bulls things like genetic abnormalities, sperm count and breed type. Fixable issues only come into play when considering price, not when considering if they will make a good breeder.

Thank God for people like Graeme and Craig. You can tell they love these cows and are really disappointed when they know they can't make an animal 100% better.

Clearly neglect. A disgrace

This kind of damage takes months, if not a couple years to happen. This bull has been suffering this injury with inadequate care for a long time. This kind of neglect is inexcusable. Very very good that the new farmer got him trimmed ASAP. Next step should be the vet

The poor animal has basically given up on life. I wonder how else he was harshly treated. The former owner should be charged with animal abuse.

My grandparents had a farm in the Texas Panhandle where they also ran a small herd of cattle. I never heard of them getting their hooves trimmed. I am guessing it was the drier and warmer climate.

Beef cattle probably don’t need hoof care like dairy cows because they’re usually free range and arid land. Plus a lot of beef ranches are in dry environments so the hooves wear down naturally. Dairy cows are usually in wet environments (be it the land or the inside dairy farm) and move around less

It's worse then a necrotic toe. The pedal bone doesn't go down into the toe. It only goes down so far. But this guy's whole pedal bone (which is higher then the toe) and tendons in his leg is most likely permanently distorted/twisted. That's what makes you want to find the previous farmers and punch him in the face.

I saw the open toe region and thought that we were getting another toe necrosis video…at least that doesn’t appear to be the case this time around, thank goodness.

@@LOVEMUFFIN_official Literally thought that as well. He started trimming back all the horn and his knife was sliding through it like butter and I knew it was Toe Necrosis! Thank goodness it was taken care of before that point!

He was talking about the bones of the foot. Given the overgrown hoof they will have spread out and maybe twisted which is why Graeme was being so wary.

I've also worked on a ranch in Canada, and I don't remember ever trimming hooves on the cattle, but the horses were done regularly. Maybe just location, or on a very small piece of land where they don't put on many miles? We had 10,000 acres, mostly bush.

The theory of it is fairly sound. Rate of hoof growth IS a genetically variable trait, and they will wear SOME down while it and about. Probably not very nice for the cows that don't have ideal traits tho

Like has already been said, foot characteristics are inheritable like any other trait. If you have 10 cows with nice tidy feet that don't need maintenance and 10 cows that regularly grow skis and will cost you $$$$ over their lifetime to keep in check, which ones are the most fiscally responsible to breed from assuming their progeny will most likely inherit those genetics? I'm just as concerned about the genetics being introduced to the Aussie and Kiwi dairy cow from American sires. Those bulls live indoors and just about everything comes to them, its room service all day and night. They are bred for just about everything... except walking... while our cows walk kilometres a day. Not just to and from the shed, but around the paddock as well while they graze. A lot of the more experienced old school farmers I know are concerned and are not willing to compromise their cows health and well-being by gambling on their ability to survive conditions at least 50% of their DNA is naive to for the sake of more litres in the vat. These unsuitable genetics are turning Aussie and Kiwi cows into little more than factory disposable waste that will need to be replaced at a much younger age than expected simply because they are unsuitable for the conditions here. A well looked after and healthy cow can still be productive well into double digits and will pass her genetic memory onto her daughters. This was commonplace up until recently where now the lifespan of the average cow is more likely to be around only 6 to 8 years. It's disheartening how greed and the price per kg of milk solids is the cause of unnecessary suffering and shortened life for our girls.

@@ashrowan2143 I knew a farmer back in NZ who decided to breed bloat out of his herd. After he lost just over 20 cows in one night he quickly gave up that idea. Not the smartest notion, right? No one is claiming they can breed out environmental health issues. But you *can* breed animals that are less susceptible and more tolerant.

I've never worked with livestock, but seeing this channel I was shocked at how easily he appears to cut through the hoof. I wasn't sure if the hooves were just softer than I thought or if it was a special kind of blade or what.
