Hey folks, I've gone down a slightly different route with this video - there's less music ... so that we can focus on the trim itself - normal service shall resume with the next upload :)

@GrainneDhu
@GrainneDhu 3 года назад
I'm far from an expert but I did work for a vet as a teen (in the early 1970s). I know the outer hoof wall (horn) has no nerve endings--it is akin to toenails. The pain is often from the pressure on the inside of the hoof capsule from pressing against the relatively inflexible outer hoof wall (when is isn't caused by something like a rock, a nail, etc). Back then, no one in our part of the country was using angle grinders, it was all done via hoof knife and nippers. If the hoof knife is kept razor sharp, there's little additional pressure applied to the hoof as horn is removed. You can't really see it in the video but quite often I could see as a teen, as soon as the abscess was opened and the pus, etc, started to come out, the cow would relax all over. With the pressure relieved, there was some soreness left, no doubt, but most of the pain was gone. Graeme keeps his knives extremely sharp and his angle grinder blades are also very sharp. You can see that he applies very little pressure as he trims hooves. Also, just being in the crush with a good part of her weight supported by the belly sling (don't know what they call it in Scotland but that is what it functionally is) and the sore hoof firmly supported by the hoof /leg restrainer, she starts the trim feeling less pain. It's like the difference between standing with a rock in your shoe and siting down with the rock in the shoe. As soon as Graeme gets into the abscess, that cow felt an immediate reduction in pain, just as if you started to slide your foot out of the shoe with the rock in it. Aaaaaaaah, the relief! So overall, for the cow, having Graeme so deftly treat her sore hoof is probably the high point of that day. She went into the crush three legged lame (from Graeme's commentary) and came out feeling a bit sore and bruised with leftover pain from the abscess but overall incredibly much better.
@untbunny
@untbunny 3 года назад
@@GrainneDhu Thank you for providing this well thought out and educational reply. When the cows are in the crush I tend to watch their front legs to gauge comfort. Graeme is truly gifted. We are blessed to have him represent the trimming business as a caring, professional.
@GrainneDhu
@GrainneDhu 3 года назад
@@untbunny Agreed! I suspect that in a crush with so much body support, the front legs are not responsive in the same way they were in the old crushes that didn't support the cow's weight. For the cattle with healthy hooves just getting a routine trim, it's probably a bit irritating to feel trapped that way. It's the cows who have painful feet that probably come out feeling like "OMG, I am so relieved!"

I never cared beyond having fresh milk for my cereal, or later, fresh cream for my coffee & fresh butter for my toast. Watching your channel has planted & nurtured in me a deep sense of compassion for these sweet animals. You're right. I do like to see you wash the hoof before you start trimming. Also right in that it seemed as if the problem was superficial after the first little bit until you got deeper with your knife. It hurts my heart a bit to see these ugly wounds in the cows, but gladdens me to know that they are now on the road to recovery. If you'd have told me a while back, that I would enjoy a channel about caring for cows hooves, I'd have said you were screwy, but I do.

Cows, prey animals in general, hide problems very well. If they look weak, sick, or injured they are fair game for predators. So instinctually, they don't show illness or injury until it is a pretty big problem they can't hide anymore. They catch things early on routine trim checks, which is why they are so important. Even if your cows don't seem lame or overgrown. 🐄
@TerryProthero
@TerryProthero 3 года назад
@Torch Singer Aside from what Sarah said, some of these farms take care of their cows extremely well. But then they will buy cows from other farms who don't do the same. I think they might be going out of business or things of that nature. But this is a way to save a lot of money purchasing cattle. But then the first thing they do is have Graeme take a look at them and to correct any problems they have. And I'm guessing the vet as well. Those are some of the worst cases Graeme has to deal with. But if we were watching his normal day, it could get pretty boring with one cow after another having no serious problems. He shows us a handful of his worst cases.
@twonyx213
@twonyx213 3 года назад
Some cows can catch things after they were last trimmed perfectly fine maybe within days or weeks later they catch a problem that can possibly turn into something serious really fast and when it starts from the inside of the foot like Sarah said they can hide it till it bothers them at its worst same with lots of animals like she come out the crush walking almost normal and before she wouldn't stand on that foot.

These vids make me wonder how long a hoofed animal in the wild like a bison could survive with such an infection. Probably not too long when it reaches this stage. Predators single out the weak to prey upon.
@Shinzon23
@Shinzon23 3 года назад
Wild bovines/buffalo usually have a lot of different terrain to roam in, and have much more durable hoof material, so they don't usually get into scenarios like domestic cows. that being said, it still happens, and yes, usually the animal gets a throatful of fangs from a wolf or cat of some kind, or dies from septicemia from the infection.
@froogsleegs
@froogsleegs 3 года назад
Aye, species like cows that have been domesticated for centuries would have little chance of survival in the wild due to changes in their body structure, if all humans stopped keeping farming animals suddenly for one reason or another they could die out. Domesticated cows have to be milked to avoid infection, cows and horses need their feet trimmed and cared for to avoid abscesses and keratin overgrowth, sheep need to be sheared annually, etc. It's interesting how human influence has shaped evolution in this way and now we're kind of tied together- domesticated animals enabled new innovations in agriculture that allowed a bigger population to be supported. Without them we would struggle, and without us they would struggle. Forever linked and relying on each other.
