How long would it take for a hoof to grow that long? I would guess she skipped a couple routine trims, but I am not familiar enough with cows to know how quickly their hooves grow when they aren't being word down by walking,

I am reminded of the line, "A stitch in time saves nine." When simple problems aren't caught and changed, one problem layers on another problem and it gets to something like you have in this video. I am sincerely hoping you can find your way through to a workable repair, even if it takes multiple trims to get there. I am glad you explain that this cow had an ankle infection that started distortion. For her, the result was uncomfortable but comfort can be restored to a large degree. That was a pretty normal walk when she got out out of the crush. Nice work.

That's OK you can fix anything. Do people ever ask to bring a single cow to you? Do you ever go to small farms with 1-10 cows? How is the bull that lost the whole bottom of his hoof. I cried when he couldn't get up. It was so heat wrenching. I was so afraid he would have to be put down, but like always you fixed him up. Thank you for what you do.
@TheMrCC21

As much as hoof trimmers want to, they can't fix everything. That's the reality of it. When they can't fix it, they try to keep them as comfortable as possible with each visit. Between visits, some farmers do the best they can to keep them comfortable.

One of the reasons I love watching this, with having nothing to do with livestock, is because of the genuine love & compassion that GP has for these beautiful creatures. To see him doing what he loves; making sure these animals lives as comfortable & hoof health shape as possible. Sometimes, we can get to see actual good people who have humanity in their souls. Unfortunately, some people forget about that.

OMG!?! How does something like this even happen??? Poor girl must have been miserable for a very long time!!! I'm just glad you were able to help her!!! Praying she makes a full recovery!!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 Even her bag doesn't look good...☹

Didn't take her long to realise she no longer had to lift her leg as high to walk. She initially was lifting that leg high, but by the end back in her pen, she was walking normally. Great outcome.

That cow looks like she's feeling a lot more comfortable than she was when she entered the crush. I hope her hoof continues to get better, that was a good job you did with trimming that hoof before it became an even bigger issue

Is this usually the result of new cattle coming into the farm? I can’t imagine this not happening due to neglect whether malicious or not. Of course it’s rare but makes me wonder why it does occur.

There have been other cases he's done with severely neglected/infected/malformed hooves on cattle that had been recently purchased as a lot. Cows that are purchased in such a fashion often are the products of a farmer going out of business or a less than ethical farmer just selling off problem cases instead of paying to have the appropriate care. This is like buying a horse at an auction: you're going to get a lot of glue nags because people just want to get rid of their "problems" instead of appropriately dealing with them. And sometimes, you just get a cow that escapes detection or capture for a long time. Can't trim a cow if you can't catch her for whatever reason.

I love these videos! For three decades, I rode and trained competition horses. GP's equivalent in the horse industry is a farrier. A good farrier was worth their weight in gold! "No hoof, No horse"! Our veterinarians and farriers would often consult with each other for a course of action. We relied on our farrier as an indispensable member of our team!

I wonder- why don’t you wear goggles? Don’t the hoof shavings fly in your face?

It's not the hoof that's the problem. It's what's stuck to it

When im machining plastic or even steel there are chips that COULD fly into my eye. But what i found when i wear safety glasses, they can trap a red hot steel chip AGAINST your eye. So. Best not to wear them.

@outerthoughts30 a red hot chip isnt going to fall out it will melt in. You are wearing the wrong goggles.
